The managing of the key players’ game time will exclude any matches in the Super Rugby finals series (play-offs, semi-finals and final), as well as the bye weeks, while it was also agreed that no player will play more than five consecutive weeks. This will also apply to players returning from injury.

Great news!! I like this idea. It will give the players some rest, while still not weakening the super rugby teams.

Urgh, fantasy rugby is going to be a mission this year. I think I'm going to go all-Aussie this year as I don't think their players will be rested like the NZ and SA players. The byes and inevitable injuries are enough of a pain to manage!!!

Seriously!! Is this all you can say about this?? Your stupid fantasy team is going to be a hassle...

Where does your priorities lie?? What about the World Cup???

I take my fantasy rugby seriously! No, I think the way our union manages our players is a bit of a farce so I can't get overly excited about what I see as a 'program' for the sake of show.

Well, the guys will not be playing more than 5 consecutive weeks, add the byes, and then some of the guys will have a good 3 week rest inbetween matches. It's a step in the right direction at least...

I suppose I can agree with that.

SARU has given more clarification on this matter:

http://www.sport24.co.za/Rugby/Super15/SARU-clarifies-rest-stance-20150318

Two principles were identified as being ideal:

i) That players should not play more than five consecutive weeks.

ii) That certain Springbok players should have a number of weeks of rest during the tournament (two to four weeks depending on each player's personal needs and position and the franchise's playing resources). Note: Bye weeks are not considered as a rest week (although they do trigger a restart of the count of consecutive weeks) while injury weeks are 'invisible' (i.e. a player injured for two weeks during the first seven weeks of the tournament would be regarded as having played five consecutive weeks at the end of week seven).

However, SARU did note that the understanding was not legally binding.

That last bit of 'not legally binding' is important as it opens it up to the coaches to determine what makes sense in individual circumstances and I see Marcell Coetzee and Pat Lambie are named to play for the Sharks against the Chiefs and it'd be their 6th straight game and I say good! Rest them for the 3 weeks thereafter I say.

why? they only play 50 minutes a game? stampkar tires the poor players...
