Scotland v Ireland, 24/02/13

What's the Connacht 9's name, not O'Donoghue the other fella? Decent player. Also, why are Pro 12 supporters 2nd class citizens?

The guy I've being talking up to you all season Marmion.

Lads how do we overlook Stringer and that pass. On another Irish watch Paddy Jackson wasn't convincing with the boot

Oh right, first name?

I know, I thin he's better than Murray still (Although I do hate Murray) but he's far and away better than Duncan Williams.

7/9? Took bottle to slot the retake.

Keiron. Is an exile. Was starting 9 for the u20's last year. We all complained about him during the 6n but he hugely improved at the WC and hasn't looked back.

You obviously didn't watch the game lmao. He only missed 1 from what, 4? 5? & he made some excellent kicks to touch too. I thought he had a pretty good game.

Ulster are **** right now and they need to sort it out. 29-29 if anyone didn't catch it.

Marmion has been good for Connacht but I think he is being overhyped. He's still learning his trade. He could go on the summer tour since it's in North America but he's not good enough to start. In the current Irish pecking order not allowing age become a barrier, I'd have him behind Murray, Reddan, Boss, Marshall and Stringer. Factoring in Stringer, Boss and Reddan all being in their 30s, Marmion will jump the queue ahead of the 2015 World Cup.

Agreed. I remain to be convinced by Jackson but he was good tonight and will start for Ireland next time out. In my opinion, Olding is a better flyhalf prospect though.

Missed 1 at start and 1 at end but some he got weren't convincing. He was like a guy who was afraid of it. Was grand in all other aspects. He slotted a kick that effectively got them the 2 points but he just looked like a fella who is effected by the attention on his place kicking. On a side not probably in wrong thread Ulster getting injuries and big dip in form at wrong time in season.
Also again I state when I say Paddy was shaky in only on about shots at goal where he's been closely watched and agree he played well in general

Sean Cronin has two tries for Leinster after 10 minutes we really need to use him smartly.

... or at all? I hope they have a good physio around at Leinster for after the international break, as there must be a lot of splinters lodged in his arse by now. They were going to get one to look at Deccie Fitz, but I reckon you wouldn't be able to get deep enough for them with a JCB.

About that, yeah. Given that one of them was from about the halfway line on the angle - right on the edge of Jackson's range and one which should really be given to a specialist long shot kicker - I'm reasonably happy.

Hugely improved from that level still isn't magnificent. Think he'll put pressure on Murray in the future, but, well, what Snoopy said.

UR2012 - That was kinda depressing, but at the same time, we've been monumentally f**ked by the injury gods. If we lose out this season, so be it - the youngsters will be another season better, we can improve on the likes of McComish and Andrew, World Domination shall be ours eventually. If we win... if we win anything this season, given everything Ulster Rugby has been through this season... won't get much better than that.

Didn't see Leinster game but it seems Madigan kicked nicely and had great game. It a big call now as Jackson just seemed very nervy kicking at goal but was fine otherwise

Madigan was always the correct call. But having backed a man, the correct call is now to back him to the hilt.

Think the real question is whether McFadden should be in the team to provide a safety net/completely remove responsibility - but doesn't seem like Kidney's considering that at all.

In which circumstances, while I retain my faith and admiration in Jackson as a player, I'll watch his first few kicks from behind a sofa.

Actually, he made 5 penalty kicks and 2 conversions - the one he missed he was allowed to take again because it was a penalty and Treviso charged him down, he took it again and got it. So, 19 points from the boot and great tactical kicks - and he was shakey?

Sorry was going by official stat that said 7/9. But never questioned him kicking out of hand I said he was shaky yea at times and taking in to account some kicks were harder to miss than score and he hit his kicks but didn't look comfortable kicking at goal. It only my opinion. And Peat I'd agree in continuing to back him as he's fine in open and good defensively but would disagree putting McFadden in just because he can kick too Jacksonn should be left sink or swim and we won't be winning 6nations so if it goes balls up at least we learning he will either improve or be cut.

I think Jackson just has something of an uncomfortable seeming face. Even when he's completely on song you wonder if he's about to make like a chichuahua and break down and cry. That's not my vote of "He'll be fine, sure", rather my vote of "God knows".

That's one philosophy - and I think that one that possibly puts development over the result a little too much. Me, I'd rather see Jackson eased into international rugby - in fact, I'm really not sure he should be there that early, but it's done now. Letting him concentrate on running the show without the shadow of goal kicking would be a good thing to do - it's certainly not held Madigan back. But then again, possibly the decision on kicking is too done now, and it would be an even bigger shadow if he didn't. And it's not like Ulster haven't already chucked him into the shark pool with steaks on already with reasonably good results.

Yes but McFadden is just about as unproven and well it not same as putting someone is the class of Sexton/O'Gara at goal kickiing in.

Seem to recall his kicking percentages last season disagreed with the latter half of your sentence.

No I meant in terms of international stage. As in whoever is put kicking at start can go either way. Lets not forget Sexton as an example

What about Sexton?

You're right that McFadden might freeze kicking on the international stage. As he hasn't frozen on any goal kicking stage for Leinster, nor has he frozen when playing for Ireland so far, it seems a fairly miniscule risk. Particularly compared to the risks that Kidney's been running recently already.
