SA Rugby to host national coaches’ indaba

Mallet should have led the indaba and not venter. Venter an AC is "groot tjomies" as he said on supersport the other day.

My only hope from this Indaba is that our coaching personnel get some clues. The good thing from Paul Treu and Mzwandile Stick attending this is that it should double their collective coaching experience. Treu went from 7s coach to XV's a side without anything in between and how much could Stick have learnt from 1 year as backline coach of the broke Kings?

The thing is though those two should never have been appointed in the first place. Talk about being thrown in at the deep end. But all in the name of BEE I suppose.

Agreed. As much as I believe Venter is an intelligent chap he is an unstable personality or at least overly emotional from what I've seen from him. Not what you want from someone who has to lead an indaba.

I don't understand how Brendan Venter is all of a sudden a coaching expert.

Venter is a very good coach. Probably one of the best from South Africa. But its his ability to create a professional environment that is beneficial to the players and the team that he is renowned for.
He is a guy who will know what structures to put in place to be succesfull and he has extensive knowledge of the structures of rugby clubs in other countries.

True, but I don't think we need a coach to run this indaba. We need a facilitator. Something like an HR expert.

Venter and the other coaches will be only one side of the group participating. Administrators will be the other part, and then players and ex-players the other part.

I have no doubt he has some coaching ability, but he is nowhere near the level that Nick Mallett is. Nick should be running the show, or in part be a very important figure at the meeting to drive things forward.

Just read on Sport 24 that Heyneke was not invited to the indaba. Also Nick Mallet and Andre Markgraaff declined the invitations.

If Malett & Markgraaff say there's no point in holding a coaching Indaba and that coaching is at the bottom of the list of things that need attention then I would suggest they too have failed the Bok faithful - for goodness sake put your selfish pride to one side and act in the best interests of SA Rugby - whether you agree with it or not. There is nothing to be gained by not participating in the Indaba.

I wouldn't disagree that there are fundamental flaws in the structure and they need to be addressed with a different approach but the 1000 mile journey starts with the first step - if the offer of co-operation is extended then give it a chance - don't just shoot the opportunity to make a difference down without at least an effort.

If this is their final position on the matter then I believe they should refrain from expressing any further opinion on the state of SA Rugby in the media. They had their chance to make a difference however small and they chose to squander it.

This was a very bad move by Mallett and Markgraaff. I won't be able to take anything seriously that Mallett says from now on Supersport.

Only reason why i think Mallett declined, is he found out that political interference will stay, and he then decided he won't waste his time.

This is probably the reason, but to be honest I think it is stupid to not even try from his side. Even if it is a waste of time at the end, at least he tried to change something. I think that is a big problem a lot of South Africans have, we keep saying to ourselves there is nothing we can do and so it just gets worse.

I think there's more to it that what that article says with regard to Mallett and Markgraaff not attending.

Why is that article only on Sport24. Why hasn't any other noteworthy sports news site also indicated that these guys are not attending??

Maybe they were told not to come. Perhaps Mallett's negativity the last 3 years, has made others feel that they don't want his pessimism at this indaba which is suppose to create optimism.

Negativity or realism ?
