[RWC2023] Ireland vs Scotland (07/10/2023)

This years six nations felt like Scotland's best chance to beat Ireland and they lost decisively. Not a beat down but not close. Ireland, again having issues with lineouts, and Scotland overall felt like they had the game.

Ireland are a huge monkey on Scotland's back. They probably should have had more success against them recently just on the way a ball bounces but have fallen short.

Making myself comfortable with the fact every score creates 2x swing for Scotland. If Ireland find themselves up 8-0 in opening 10, Scotland need an unanswered 16 points - that is serious pressure.

Scotland can look to '91 for motivation against Ireland, when they handed Ireland their only loss in round-robin. I'm rooting for Scotland to win.
The oldest scot in the squad is 34, he was 2 when that match happened - I doubt it'll provide much motivation.

Get a lead and that's a team to hold it. Kelleher, Ryan, Conan and Murray off the bench is sicko. Very safe with injuries, I reckon Ryan starts and Henshaw benches if it was next week.
I'd have preferred O'Brien ahead of McCloskey because he's more versatile. I can only assume that Ryan is still nursing his wrist and will only come on if Henderson/Beirne has to be taken off.

Well we learn alot.
1. Conan is fit so the backrow 4 is in tact and won't change now barring injury.
2. Crowley is the clear backup now.
3. I think Sheehan is in for the rest of it and Kelliher off the bench.
4. Henderson/Ryan will switch next week.
5. Henshaw has a race to be fit but will be 23 or else I think Earls gets that shirt.

A bit ruthless but Ross Byrne, Jimmy O'Brien, Craig Casey, Keith Earls, Ryan Baird/Joe McCarthy and Jeremy Loughman are all now done unless injury.

I reckon Ryan is fine, just didn't train all week so not taking the risk. If he wasn't fully fit Baird and McCarthy would be trusted.

I reckon if we get through this weekend without any injuries Henshaw could go home and Healy comes in. Henshaw has such rotten luck.

Price has got the nod, hope he's got form back. Horne will be waiting to cause chaos at 60mins.

Worried about Nel being on the bench, our scrum is not nearly as strong with him anymore.

Just as well most fans for this one may be picking on street accomodation after the match with a blanket of vomit.
Quite telling about the profile of this RWC that the narrative is about next year's Olympics rather than the self-described "3rd biggest sporting event in the world" that's going on there right now!
