[RWC2023] Argentina vs Chile (30/09/2023)

Has there ever been this many South American teams at a world cup? They seem to all produce some really exciting players

Nope. It's the first time that North America wasn't guaranteed its own spot (USA and Canada would have a two legged playoff for americas one) and South America claimed both of the americas spots. The US still essentially got the last chance qualifier spot by result though.

Seems to be a bit of a rugby movement forming in the south. Didn't Brazils pack give the Maori all blacks a tough time a few years back?

edit.

2018, so more than "a few years". pardon...

Yeah Brazil had a really good pack 5 years ago and a really good kicker. Essentially they'd win a penalty and kick three to win a lot of games. People thought they'd be the next big thing. That kicker (Reeves) is now the coach of their super rugby Americas side but that golden generation has somewhat faded. Even Paraguay has a decent SAR side but they have some Argentinian reinforcements to help bring guys along.

This is Chile's chance to put themselves on the rugby map in south America

Agreed. However, I feel like Argentina need a statement victory here. They were terrible against England and very average against Samoa, so I think they'll want a big win to restore some confidence before the game with Japan.

Chilean coach expecting to be thrashed again as with England. A very bitter interview (not without justification) and a great circus analogy.

"It is like a show, in that on the one hand we are the clowns and on the other there are the owners of the circus. I have already found this to be repulsive."

I hope his team talk strikes a different tone. :/

I dislike coming across as arrogant but i have to look at the facts and after doing so I really don't see how that is possible. For three reasons.

- Pumas have never, ever lost to Chile and Arg XV hast lost, once i believe. Arg XV played Chile a month ago. Almost 30 point difference with most players who didnt even make it to the world cup.
- Some claim that Arg is fielding a second team. The question i have is, are our subs that much worse? Is Mateo Carreras that much better than Imhoff? I don't see it. I see a squad that has more doubts than certainties in terms of a starting XV and this is giving the chance to fight for that spot
- I expect Arg to put the pedal to the metal. Arg needs to make a statement. More internally than externally but still.

And sure, Chile will start strong, and who knows, they might even get lucky and get a try or two. But that will be about it.
I'd say us winning by 30 points would be a catastrophe (for us).

That's not arrogant.

Yeah Argentina should expect to win by a lot and honestly if that wasn't the standard they were holding themselves to it'd be an issue. There U23 teams in past could handle the rest of the Americas pretty easily back in the ARC days.

That being said. I think both teams will be looking to put on a show. This is a huge occasion for Chile and just showing they belong on the same pitch as the actual Pumas will be a victory. Not a moral victory but it will show that the standard of Chilean rugby has changed.

I'm expecting a beating but one within the normal realm of rugby. Probably 30-40 points.

Mitigated down to yellow for that dip from the ball carrier at the end?

No much of a bend at the waist from the defender though
