RWC Semi Final: New Zealand - Australia (16-10-2011, 21:00)

Thought the naki forwards were pretty good in that shield game too.. no doubt he has some potential but he is bloody unpolished, he had flashes of good play. Agreed though there's plenty of good guys coming through, Hoeata will be the next Brad Thorn I hope. I'd like to see Crotty kick on, also think Tom Taylor could be the next Aaron Mauger type guy for Canterbury.

True the forwards were great, but Barrett controlled the tempo and territory like a veteran, kept the defense honest with his running and slotted every point for the winning side. They would have lost that game if Ripia or Kirkpatrick was playing is what i'm saying. 'Unpolished' is really the wrong word too, unpolished for me is a player that shows flashes of brilliance amongst flashes of ugly play, like Sopoaga or Quade Cooper. Barrett has never had a poor game, he has either been outstanding or quiet; reminicent of a young Carter at this stage in his career. 'Untested' would be the word i would use.

As for the midfield, we have so many players its ridiculous. Its not an issue of which players to choose as it is what 12-13 dynamic to use. The Nonu-Smith style runner-distributor, the Mauger-Umaga playmaker-runner, Stanley-Ranger defender-runner etc..

So the deal has been made?!?!.. or he is making his deal after the world cup? thats how I took it.
You might be right. From what I gathered the Super 15 squads are due to be named less than a week after the RWC final so the decision must be made early next week if it hasn't already done so.I saw a few write ups a while back (thought I can't seem to find them) with strong rumours linking him to the Blues over the Chiefs. All speculation I guess, he may very well have signed already.

As I could remember from the news reports he was supposed to announce it after the Tri-Nations...

No it was definatly after the WC.

It makes no difference either way. We all know what he's capable of when it comes to contracts. He's just as likely to walk out half way through the season and sign with the Philly Eagles.

... and shoulder charge as often as he wants without being penalised!!

One can only hope. At least it would be one less self-obssessed igo the NZRU didn't have to bother with.

"Auckland - Sonny Bill Williams will confirm which New Zealand franchise will secure his services after the Castle Tri-Nations, saying that he doesn't want the news to distract the All Blacks as they look to defend their crown."

Ha! Because the All Blacks were that worked up about which franchise Money Bill Williams was going to sign for.

Well nothing's been made public at this point in time.

I dont understand this hate for SBW. The All Blacks like him, many men like him, the kids LOVE him, the ladies LOVE him, wait, rewind the track a little....ohh there you go, now I know why some men hate SBW, because some mens partners/wifes have SBW as wallpapers on their phone lol.

Hate em all you want, hes an All Black and all those guys are close. Us as fans can either love or hate but at the end of the day its them that roll together, they're a tight unit, they are team.

Lol, that's got nothing to do with it Sam. You can't hind the truth that he lost a lot a heck of respect when he walk out on the Dogs. You don't have to be a league fan or even a sports fan to acknowledge that. It's got nothing to do with league, or rugby or how he plays. He showed himself as a man out for himself. When it comes to the All Blacks I personally don't appreciate guys who put themselves above the game or the jersey and unfortunatly that kind of professional sport mentality does stem primarily from league. Williams is a good player, I'm not disputing it. I think it's just his ego that gets in the way. He reminds me somewhat of Carlos Spencer and Luke McAlistar or even Ma'a Nonu(when he first started out)

To me, a bloke like Richie McCaw is a true All Black. He'll put the team and the jersey before anything. He stayed in the country because of his love for the All Blacks when he could have been earning millions in Europe.

No offense meant to you Black Heart, but why do people try to refer to SBW derogatorily as "Money Bill Williams"? He rejected one of the biggest money offers in rugby union, from Toulon, to come home to New Zealand and play for a spot on the All Blacks side. That, to me at least, is a clear indication that money is not his primary goal.

I think he picked up the nickname when he ditched the Bulldogs for the money lol.

I don't believe he will stay in the country (or in the sport) once 2012 is done. My impression is that he saw his chance to make history in winning the RWC and now that the All Blacks will most likely achieve that goal, he's nothing more to prove. He came to New Zealand in order to be eligable to be named in this tournament. If he goes back to the NRL or back North to Europe then good on him, that's his decision. But as far as I'm concerned he's only there for one reason and it ain't for the honour of the jersey.

Because he left the Bulldogs with no notice to sign for a French club which paid him considerably more. The fact that he came to New Zealand to be a part of a winning Rugby World Cup team will probably add a few hundred grand to any future contracts. Regardless, he's still getting paid more than any other rugby player in New Zealand barring McCaw and Carter, after not even being a starting spot. He signs one year contracts and holds the NZRU over a barrell to resign. He's hardly a saint, and there is no doubt that there are great financial benefits to being in the All Blacks during a RWC.

I'm sure he genuinely wants to be in a RWC team, I just don't think he values the All Blacks any where near the level of someone like Gear, Mealamu, Carter, McCaw, Thorn, Nonu, Smith, Muliaina etc, who have all had to earn spots in the All Blacks and have given up the best years of their lives huge amounts of cash for the All Blacks. Especially players like Gear who's in the prime of his life, misses out on a four year challenge to be in the All Blacks in the RWC, and still signs for the Highlanders knowing he's missed out. That's dedication.

Despite Sam's view that anyone who doesn't like SBW is jelous, I think the reason why people don't like him, is that he personifies everything which people don't like in professional sport. Either way, you can't blame him for being out for himself (who isn't really?), I'm more frustrated with the hype that he creates, as he is clearly a good player, but he's not a better wing than Gear/Rokocoko/Sivivatu/Jane/Guildford/Maitland/Masaga/Dagg and he's not a better inside centre than Ma'a Nonu and he's not a better utility than Toeava, and yet he'll always get so much more attention than them. The attitude that we have to pick him to play somewhere is wrong, if he's not good enough to be a starter in his position, why put a tested and capable player out of their position to test if he's capable?

Anyway, I didn't mean to have that diatribe. He is a good player and a seemingly good bloke in person. Sometimes he comes off as a tad fake (just watched an interview of him in which when he was asked if he could have any super power, he said "I wish I could create things out of nothing, so I could create money to give to all the poor countries" and he said it with out a hint of irony). But other than that he seems all right.

ANYWAY, I'll take it all back if he's not picked in the 22 against France and then signs with the NZRU on a two year contract.

This.

You both make fair points that I understand. Since I don't really follow league I suppose I didn't quite "fully understand" the implications of him walking out on the Bulldogs.

I now sit here feeling like a more educated woman from having read your posts. Thank you for the informative responses. :)

Yeah I understand and you make a lot of sense. Me and nick been down this road a few times before, you're not alone.

Im not blinded by my support for SBW, Im just a big fan and it sad that some really good players missing out because of him. Its like working for years at one place, getting told a few months before that you were gonna get promoted to boss and then the new kid on the block comes and takes your place, it is sad. Im hoping Sonny realises this so he can be more grateful and it might even hype him up to play his all out best.

Good post... I heard the 'Money Bill Williams' on Jed Thian's alternative commentary, which was a good laugh.. although they were so drunk by the last 15 minutes that it was hard to follow. It was probably one of the safest things they said about players! (After Weepu secured a loose ball he said 'if anyone's going to nick something faster than an Aussie it'll be a hori from Wainuiomata'.)

After SBW's 'cameo' ending in a yellow card Jed Thian and his sidekick seemed ambivalent that he was off and said something like 'we don't need him anyway'. It does seem that he is surplus to requirements to the All Black squad, and someone like Mils would be more deserving of the 22 jersey. SBW hasn't had a bad world cup, but in a team that is playing superbly his defensive error in the QF against Cabello and his daft tackle in the SF to earn a yellow really stand out...

I'm not an SBW hater, just think that other players are more appropriate for the 22 jersey. Cory Jane (he of the 'bogan mullet' as Jed Thian called him....) really deserves a spot on the wing, and makes a perfect back 3 with Kahui and Dagg. As for the centres... well, Nonu and Conrad Smith are playing great and are defensively sound. Hope SBW continues in RU and we see more of him in S15 at Blues. Weepu 10, SBW 12 would be an interesting midfield to say the least

To be fair to him I think he has started to realise the truth of what he's playing for. But unfortunatly he will always do what's best for him which isn't necesssarily the best for his public relations.

Honest question: Thorn's coming and going between RL and RU is different? It wasn't for money?

Honest question: Thorn's coming and going between RL and RU is different? It wasn't for money?

Thorn always wanted to be an All Black when he was younger. I think he has a genuine passion for the jersey. Yes for the money but mainly because he really wants to.

Here in NZ, I saw this little documentary on him and yeah, hes passionate about being an All Black.

Honest question: Thorn's coming and going between RL and RU is different? It wasn't for money?

Hard to hear him speak and think it was about the money. When he first came over to Union, there is no doubt he was getting paid more as an international for Australia and a winning Brisbane Broncos team than he was for Canterbury. Either way, he has certainly done his dues in the All Blacks. 50+ tests, long term contracts and a monster work ethic just show how much he loves the All Blacks. It's his last game on Sunday, and I wouldn't be suprised to see a few tears. Legend and loyal servant to both codes.
