RWC: New Zealand - Tonga (09-09-2011, 20:30)

Never been a fan of the 'Ikale Tahi sipi Tau I wish they would use Mate Ma'a Tonga's version. Anyways I read an article in the nzherald where NZ will start and Tonga will begin 10 secs later( probably because the Sipi Tau is shorter) , But yes both unions have agreed to do something similar to '03
I personally like the Ikale Tahi's Sipi Tau better than any other wardance (on par with Manu & Toa Samoas Siva Tau of coarse) with the pointing the fingers at the start being my favourite bit (although they seem to have cut most of that out in the latest 2010 version). I have noticed that the rendition of it has made subtle changes with the actions and lyrics every couple of years. My favorite rendition is probably the one they were using in 2003 (the one in the video in my last post) although I do like the 2010 (current) version alot too. Since it has changed the lyrics seem to have too, I have found a transcript of the new lyrics, would any of the Tongans be able to translate as everywhere else only has translation of the old version ?

From my research I think this is the translation, though forgive me if i am wrong.

Teu lea pea tala ki mamani katoa
I shall speak to the whole world

Ko e 'ikale taki kuo halofia
The sea eagle is starved

Ke 'ilo 'e he sola moe taka
Let the foreigner and sojourner beware

Koe 'aho ni teu tamate tangata

Today, destroyer of souls I am, everywhere

'A e haafe mo e tautua'a
To the half back and the backs

Kuo hu'i hoku anga tangata
I have shed my human characteristics

Maul and loose forwards I shall mow

Pea ngungu mo ha loto fita'a
And crunch any fierce hearts you know

Taki: Ngungu!

Hei e!! TONGA!!

Yup that's it pretty much, just missed the first line which is the leaders call for Tonga to prepare for battle.

After watching the news broadcast on Tongas reception at Auckland Airport I am PUMPED for this World Cup to get started. Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga have my support.

LE MANU!!!

FIJI!!!

TONGA!!!

Chehooo.

Not sure what the Canadian team looked like during the Churchill Cup but I can assure you The Tongan team at the Churchill was maybe a little bit past half strength when you compare that team then the one that will meet Canada, New Zealand and the rest of Pool A.

TONGA Curchill Cup / RWC (Full strength) Lineup
1. Tonga Lea'Aetoa / Soane Tonga'uiha
2. Semisi Telefoni / Ephraim Taukafa
3. Kisi Pulu
4. Sione Timani
5. Emosi Kauhenga / Joe Tuineau
6. Josh Afu / Viliami Ma'afu
7. Pepa Koloamatangi / Finau Maka (or Nili Latu when he joins the team)
8. Pasuka Mapakaitolo / Samiu Vahafolau
9. Daniel Morath / Taniela Moa
10. Kurt Morath
11. Viliami Iongi
12. Etueni Siua / Siale Piutau
13. Suka Hufanga / Alipate Fatafehi
14. Viliami Helu / Fetu'u Vainikolo
15. Etimoni Paea / Vunga Lilo

I'm Sure its not easy for both these teams to gather their top players at any given time. Canada does have good players and has had the edge over Tonga going by past results. But as I've said in a previous post, last time they meet was 2003 RWC (Canada won 24 - 7) where that Tongan team was very weak and that they have never played a Tongan side quite as strong as this one. I truly believe, with no disrespect to the Canadian posters here, that the Tongan should come out victorious with their encounter this time around. Lets wait and see though for what should be an entertaining game.

Well as you say that the Tongan team was a little over half strength, and Canada had a better showing than Tonga at the Churchill cup, and Bail was saying that a half strength team would beat Canada, it kinda supports my point, doesn't it

... Anyway, it's likely that the under strength Tongan side will face the All Blacks, and the full strength one will play Canada four days later

i cant wait for this match!!!! really want tonga to win!! i gotta good feelin about this...remember anything can happen in the RWC:D..ANY GIVEN SUNDAY!

Tongas churchill cup side had members who wouldnt even be considered 4th or 5th string for their respective positions. Some of the players were from 7s and Tonga As side. Tonga didnt go to the Churchill Cup to win games. The game against Italy A showed Tonga didnt even pick the best available for that game.

From the News broadcast I watched Tonga will play their best Team on Friday. Finau Maka also said He wants the ALL BLACKS to perform their Haka first.

Where do you Aucklanders recommend to go for an afterparty of sorts after a game? I haven't been in Auckland since moving away at the age of 12 aside from a trip to the airport and I'm going up alone for QF4 unfortunately. :(

Wow, ABs uber confident, they really don't want a 22nd player?

:p

Henry experimenting?

Not a bad side - backs are "experimental" in as much as Kahui/Dagg/SBW are in there

Looking forward to it :D

Come on Tonga!
Always like an underdog, and I'm a big fan of the P.I sides (though Samoa are by far my favourite :p )

No, I'm just incompetent, and was unable to copy and paste the team correctly ;)
Really interesting team - I was expecting a full strength lineup, but there certainly appears to be a bit of experimenting in the backline. Only surprise in the forward pack is Hore getting the start at hooker (with Flynn on the bench) - hopefully Hore has a strong game, as I would quite like him to start against France (with Mealamu on the bench). SBW/Nonu midfield will be interesting, and it is good to see Dagg get the start at fullback.

interesting linup, full strength lineup out to Dan Carter then outside him they have selected players with more size (toeava, kahui and SBW over the smaller Guilford, Smith and Jane)

No doubt the AB's will win though I would have liked to see a full strength side all the way through. I even think getting the top side running together is worth risking them out of cotton wool. And heck if Dan I Richie are on the field you may as well run a full strength side.

Mills will miss the game which means that he will drop one test behind McCaw in the race to 100. That may mean that McCaw could be rested for the next game so they make it in the same game.

Glad to see kahui on the wing. With Zac not taking the chance he was given against Australia I think Kahui should take over one of the wings in the full strength team.

I dont expect Tonga to trouble the AB's on the scoreboard but the important thing is to come away injury free, Tonga are a big physical side.

My preferred full strength side:

1, Woodcock
2, Hore
3, Owen
4, Thorn
5, Williams
6, Kaino
7, McCaw
8, Vito
9, Cowan
10, carter
11, Kahui
12, Nonu
13, Smith
14, jane
15, Mills

16, Mealamu
17, Ben franks
18, Boric
19, Whitelock (Thompson/Read if they were ready)
20, Weepu
21, Slade
22, Dagg
