Russian rugby

Great to see! Let's hope that Russia can get back to those heights in the near future!

Official attandance record in Russia - 104.000 on Moscow Championship 1962 at Luzhniki Stadium. Spartak 13-11 Khimki
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpY6ElVYifU

100,000 attendance. Are you sure?

If that many were interested in rugby then why have they been crap for so long.

Seems strange that they got that many then, when now they are the worst attended ENC team playing their matches in Sochi where nobody cares about rugby.

You are aware that the sport was big in the eastern block until it was banned?

Have you heard of the Soviet Union?

Heck, in the United States, you'd think it was banned here with the lack of coverage we get here. It's Amateur & national team. College. That's about it. Former Springboks players are coming here coaching American Amateur teams to help grow the sport. Essentially if we didn't grow up playing it, how can it be a pass time? Rugby in this country is an acquired fondness. Sadly, with all the college American Football players that don't go pro, there's PLENTY to work with in starting a rugby league here. But no dice! It stinks. In the meantime, I have to wait for the 1 channel I get (Universal Sports) to show games like Springboks vs. All Blacks coming soon. In the meantime, ya have to wade thru all the cricket on that channel...LMAO! I thought baseball was boring....lol (zzzzz!)

It's sad really. I'd love to see a professional league here, like a real one. We sort of have one, but gets NO coverage at all. People aren't interested. There's certainly no way they're ready to play internationally. We're playing against each other for the time being. It has the potential to be huge if it had some international support. I'd love to see some pressure put on the US to develop leagues somehow. Maybe games would show up on more than one extra channel I have to pay for, just for rugby!

I'll have you know that cricket is wonderful.

LOL, for who? Be that as it may, a sport that resembles baseball or rounders and ends up with olympic basketball scores........*yawn* is a bit much & will have a tougher time growing here than rugby. It looks like a fun sport to play, & can be fun to watch. For about 5 minutes, lol. Then again, I haven't grown up playing or watching it. From the outside looking in, we don't have it in us to watch a game w. lunch breaks involved. As insulting as that may sound, I'm not trying to insult the sport, it's simply why it would have a hard time growing here. We have cricket clubs here, but that's about the extent of it. I personally find it boring, & I've forced myself to watch a bit of it. 6 points for a home run (out of the field)? LOL!!!. Wonderful as it may be, it's difficult for me & almost 350 million others to watch, lol. We'll watch World Cup Soccer which is a stretch & more soccer than the average person watches before we watch or get into cricket.

If we had some skin in the game, maybe, but until then *yawn* Pakistan vs. India games will continue to be a tough sell here. At least I can explain the game to someone who knows nothing about it. I mean, I've watched entire matches, I gave it a fair shake, I just can't get into it. Batters wearing body armor & swinging a canoe paddle, long games, astronomical scores, lol. If it's any consolation, I don't like soccer either, lol!!!! American Football, Rugby, & hockey. During the summer I'll catch big rivalry baseball games like the Red Sox vs. Yankees, but that's it. Some Rugby, whatever is on. I'll go to the local University & watch their rugby games, but yeah. As for cricket....in a place where baseball is the pass time, it's a tough sell. As for me, I find it boring.

Fair to say I doubt you'll ever get the point.
The point is to have fun. Isn't it? What's more fun than watching paint dry? :D So I think cricket sucks. It's just one man's opinion. Don't let it spoil yer day  I already understand the game. The short series, the long series, yadda yadda. I get more out of watching women's basketball than watching cricket. I watched Olympic Gymnastics over cricket, I mean, that's saying something

The US Tomahawks beat Canada in game 1 of the Colonial Cup playoffs, now THAT was fun. Doesn't make up for the Eagles loss to the Canucks earlier this summer, but I feel a little better. Granted it's no Springboks vs All Blacks but it's something, lol. More fun than watching cricket

Stiff upper lip M8, not everyone can get into a game where someone wears padded fishing waders, a lacrosse helmet, & swings a canoe paddle. Padded sumo suit wrestling would be more fun, lol.

That's a lot of words for very little information communicated. Reminiscent of 2 females having a conversation.

I feel like I'm talking to Mr. Bean. Is this Mr. Bean?....are you putting me on? All this because 1 man thinks cricket sucks? Are you that much of a candy arse?....wow. You think I'm less a man for it. King's to you Edmond, well played, pip - pip....cheerio. Take care Mr. Bean. This has to be the funniest convo I've ever had w. a limey. I can't wait to tell my co-worker who's English. He likes the game, isn't a huge fan, he likes rugby as well. This is too precious though. I copied it to his email, he's going to think I made this up. In a rugby forum a Brit gets weepy because a yank thinks cricket sucks. Have you considered a shuffle-board forum?

This can't be the central issue, it's nothing really to get offended or upset over. What's really troubling you? Talk to uncle Jason. :D

Wut?

Yes you are right most of the games are collected from several hundred spectators. But some of the games for 2-3 thousand, and the playoffs 5-6 thousand.
Why not though the Russian team? 'Cause she does not play rugby cities. Sochi - a resort, not rugby city, our federation does not deal with this problem, to bring games to warm, and in winter you can only play there. Organization of team matches at a very low level, they all efforts directed at the development of Rugby 7.
The second problem is that rugby is developing in Russia, with interruptions (World War 2, and then a complete ban to 1961 years on a play rugby (he was considered a bourgeois sport.) Also in 1987, the communists did not allow the USSR national team to participate in the World Cup 87 (of due to apartheid in South Africa) - instead we went to the Italians, though at the time we wanted to see in the 6 nations, but our place was taken up in Italy (it's very influenced by the big economic crisis in 90 years, while 90% of children have disappeared schools and clubs: in 1981 there were 200 clubs and 15,000 rugby players, and in the late 90's only 5-6 professional clubs.
Only 5-6 years ago in rugby appeared little money, increased PRL to 10 professional clubs, has added more than 60 amateur clubs, children's school ...

That is rugby in Russia developed in four stages:

1. Prior to World War 2 (the first leagues were held in 1923, and first national championship in 1936) - a record 50,000 in 1938 in the Moscow derby Spartak - Lokomotiv.
2. From 1961 to 1991 (USSR Championship from 1966 to 1991) - a record 104,000 in 1962 Spartak - Khimki.
3. Rugby during the crisis in 1992 and 2000 - a record in 1992 in Moscow (Russia-10000 Barbarians).
4. New Era (21 century) - in Krasnoyarsk in 2002 (18000 Russia-Ireland).

New FC Spartak Stadium (45000 cap) build finish in Dec2013. I hope that Russian Bears and Rugby Club Spartak play in this configuration

Nice stadium.. Wow, so will that be the largest Rugby Purpose made Stadiums in Russia?

Amazing!

Not this is new stadium of FC Spartak, but mayby in future on this ground and other big football stadium who build to FIFA WC 2018 Russia host RWC 2023 or 2027 (today in radio that says press-atashe of Rus Rugby Union). Or FC Spartak (their ouner rich nafta corp Lukoil) will united with RC Spartak as it was in Soviet times. Spartak Sport Socaity (3 clubs: FC, RC and RHC) was founded in 1936 and start in Top USSR leagues. Creators were 4 Starostin brothers, they in 30-years play in Spartak teams on football, rugby and Russian hockey, and after 2WW to 90 they were managers in FC and RC, but in crisis 90-yers RC Spartak dead and only in 2007 club revived the people from Georgia, but they do not have a lot of money for development.

Top-3 tries scorers in PRL now (after 16 Rounds):

1. Denis Simplikevich (STM) - 16 (in 10 games or 672 minutes)
2. Dmitry Gerasimov (STM) - 10
3. Anton Rudoy (STM) - 9

And full statistic of rising Russian star Denis Simplikevich (21 old) in official matches for our club and National team (without test)

Club:

RC Novokuznetsk (2009) 1 try in 6 games
RC Novokuznets (2010) 8 tries in 15 games
Enisey-STM (2011) 4 tries in 6 games
Enisey-STM (2012) 16 tries in 10 games....

Full in PRL 29 tries in 38 games (18\09\12)

Russia Nat team

4 tries in 4 games (2\2 in RWC2011 and 2\2 in ENC2012)
