Rugby World Cup 2011 Official Game

Will be pretty disappointed if they recycle animations from 08... used to hate that they used some Rugby 2004 animations in 08, especially that one where they dive on the ball at the ruck... was hideous.

Yeah, although wouldn't that all be owned by EA??? So maybe they'd have to redo everything... I dunno, but I hope they really do make some progress from Rugby 08... That game was enjoyable and had smooth gameplay, but it simply wouldn't cut it as far as next gen gaming goes

Maybe there is more than 20 teams. In the statement HB only talks about the World Cup mode. But who knows maybe the other game modes are implied. It would really be stupid to release a game with just one game mode.

Rugby 08 was smooth, but did anyone who owned an xbox (and has played rugby 08 - only available on ps2 and pc) think that rugby 06 ran more smoothly than its 08 counterpart. Could have just been me, but i really found that 06 (on the xbox) seemed more fluid and less jittery?? anyways totally stoked for this game, cant wait to see whats in store

Agree, animations were poor in 08. They also need some more...we saw too much of the same thing. Wouls like to see a realistic "Bounce" from a big Blindside flanker and the defender flying backwards and towards the ground. Also a proper "Get off me" handoff...eg. a powerful push off rather than just a timed handoff everytime. Also need new Step...08' step was so unrealistic, need a big step from those agile guys and alittle jink from the bigger centres...in general more realistic smooth animations that go with a players abilities; eg. Bakkies Botha can't step..HA HA. Hope they get these realistic aspects right.

Im really against canned animations, but if they really must be used they should at least have a large stock of variations. Using the NBA2K franchise as an example, they have hundreds and hundreds of different shooting animations, so most of the players have a unique shot. The same has been done for cross-overs, post moves etc.
While i realise its unrealistic to expect 700 different sidesteps, i think 20-30 or so is a reasonable request.

That was one thing that Rugby Challenge 2006 had over the HB games, there was actually a variety of sidesteps, but the problem was you didn't know which one was going to happen, and one was so slow that you were always going to be tackled by the inside player. I'd be happy to have about 5 different steps/jukes (its not too many and i guess it gives players a little bit of individuality). Obviously in a perfect world i'd want every player to have an unique step, but thats unrealistic. As long as Shane Williams, Chris Ashton, Sivivatu and Habana step differently thats the main thing i think for a next gen game :D I'd love to have a few unique things (Campese/Cooper step, Spins, dummies, Jason Robinson shimmy thing) but for a base i think basic differences in sidesteps is a realistic want :D :D

I think this one area where Fifa has really excelled in from 08 - Present. Their skills and moves that the user can operate are non pre-canned animations and for that reason can loop into one another in a string of moves. Because they are not pre-canned there is no relation between correct execution and success rate - as it should be in real life. It was possible to do stepovers, fakes etc correctly but not work effectively in the game because they were not used in the correct scenario and the attacked and defender would collide, or the ball get knocked away etc. Likewise it should be in a Rugby ***le that if you do a sidestep right in front of a player with a Prop then you shouldn't really be able to get away from them without being tackled (well, 95% of the time) because of their sidestep technique typically being not very good, whereas a player such as Shane Williams could leave his step until later because of the huge change of direction he gets in such a short space.

Likewise with non-canned animations they take time to master, and as in Fifa, you can play perfectly well without them. What annoys me the most about canned animations is the 'Fifa-Street' style that once the animation has been activated it will either be too early/late and fail or correct timing and succeed. Either way both players lose control of their players and are taken on a 1 second animation to show you it happening which is completely non-dynamic and you can therefore instantly predict what it going to happen. Most annoyingly though in defence you cannot do anything about it if it is executed with correct timing.

The sad thing is that non-canned animations were used as far back as ESPN NFL 2K5 which were absolutely superb and worked fantasically. Unfortunately, EA gained exclusive licence to the NFL and the ESP franchise dried up so word has been lost about this game. Here are some videos from youtube to show you what I mean:

See in this video how the player dynamically moves to slide between tacklers, pushs up against players in front of him and bounces off a tackle.

Sorry about the weird guy talking. See here how the sidestep causes two players to be left for dead as it is not a pre-canned animation.

Fantastic mechanics...the graphics appear to be wonderful too for such an old game

Thats a good point there dude, Will be very interesting to see and official world cup game without "arguably" the biggest team in world rugby (enter abuse). Its kinda like having a Fifa world cup game without Brazil licensed :p :p all in time i guess :D

It's kind of different but in FIFA 11 Brazil's lit is not licensed not too sure about players. Seems strange though as Kaka is the front man.

2K5 was miles ahead of Madden at the time, but EA killed the competition when they took the NFL licence. Was really exited for All Pro Football 2K8, but that unfortunately was a bit of a let down; despite being on ps3 was hardly any different from its 2005 ps2 counterpart. One thing they did well in 2k8 was give players certain abilities that others couldn't, only certain RB's could do spin moves more efficiently in traffic, certain players could "scissor kick" (ala compese/cooper). Was a cool addition. :D :D would love to see something similar in the upcoming game, gives players some individuality - even if it means back and forward.

Can I just say if you follow the links it take you to the OFFICIAL RWC Page. The game is also called RWC 2011. They must therefore have some licensing and probably have licensing to all the teams involved. meaning the All Blacks and Wallabies!

Player licenses go through the clubs. That's the difference.

I'm really happy that we finally got some news! It's great to hear the game is coming out in august too! I find it a shame that there are only 20 teams to play but hopefully the game play will be great with lots of features and the multi player hopefully will be great. This game and Rugby Challenge should hopefully have everything I want from a rugby game! Should be great and can't wait for it!

Sure hope this game looks good... over a year since it was announced and not a semblance of a screenshot as to what it looks like or what engine they're using... are we talking Fifa quality visuals or what?
