Romanian Rugby

Interesting bit of history. I take it rugby league is not so popular now in Russia? I see results from the Russia RL team occasionally, but they don't seem too strong. In the 1990s, it briefly looked as though league would overtake union in Russia.

You can read the topic about the Russian rugby, and that soon all the topics in this forum will be about Russia ...:D

Thanks Vladimir - have posted on the Russian thread.

Dragos - I presume rugby league has never been played in Romania? I know it has a small following in Serbia.

Superliga 5th place playoff return leg Dinamo - U Cluj 30-29
Tries: Mihai Adascalitei, Mihai Merca, Iliuta Bratu / Levan Genebashvili, Csaba Gal, Vlad Rotar, Taniela Halafihi
Since they won the first leg 26-15, U Cluj has finished 5th in this season of the Superliga, with Dinamo 6th

35 years ago, on 23 November 1980, Romania won the biggest victory against France, 15-0 on the Giulesti Stadium in Bucharest. The only try of the match was scored by Pompilie Bors, with Ion Constantin adding the conversion and 3 penalties. The French team included players like Blanco and only a few months later they went on to win a Grand Slam in the Five Nations Tournament.

According to rumours, the Romanian domestic competitions will be radically modified for the next season:
- the Superliga will be expanded to 10 teams, the current 6 and the best 4 from the second division (clubs from Petrosani, Iasi, Navodari and Galati). These teams would be split in two groups of 5, with the best 2 from each group qualifying to a playoff of 4 (the others 6 clubs go to the play-out). Another drastic change is that the league would start in August 2015 and end in May 2016, aligning the season with the Western leagues from the current spring-autumn format.
- the Romanian Cup would consist of 12 clubs, again split in two groups. The best two from each group qualify to the semifinals. The competition will start in April and end in June, to cover the period when the Superliga used to start.
- apparently the new format will be decided only in February 2016, the clubs were given time to find the required budget to compete. I fear some of them will be unable to, and the competitions will have to start with fewer teams.

Interesting, good to see the super liga expanding even if some of these teams will be smashed. But it would be better with a unique group of 10 teams IMO

I think the two-group split is meant to decrease travel costs.

Some of these teams will be trashed but I still think it's a good idea for several reasons:
- they will raise their level in time. Dinamo or Cluj for example used to lose heavily as well but have become more competitive this season, even managing to keep it tight against the top teams.
- it gives the top clubs some easy games where they can use their youngsters. Promising guys like Zaharia from Timisoara would probably start against Petrosani for example.
- the increased level will eventually help some of the players from the weak clubs develop, it creates a bigger selection pool for the national team. There is talent in these weaker sides, for example a centre from Navodari was selected last year to play against the England Counties and several Petrosani players have been used by the 7s national team.

Superliga semifinals will be played tomorrow:
Timisoara Saracens vs CSM Bucuresti, 11.00 local time, live on TVR2
Baia Mare vs Steaua, 13.00, live on TVR2 - the renovated and expanded stadium in Baia Mare will be used for the first time, the final of the SUperliga will also be played there

The matches can be watched on:
http://www.tvrplus.ro/live-tvr-2 (official good quality stream, an add-on like Hola Unblocker might be needed)
www.rugbytv.ro (inferior quality but it should not be geoblocked)

CSM Bucuresti was in a tragic situation this week, the players have not been paid for months and threatened not to play in Timisoara. In the meantime, some of the restant wages have been paid. It seems that the club will play next season with a young squad and most of the experienced players will leave the team, many of them did so already. It's rumored that Florin Vlaicu and Florin Surugiu have signed contracts with foreign clubs and others will follow.

Sad news for CSM, the squad was so impressive at the begin of the season and now, so many financial problems...
I hope Vlaicu will sign in a pro league, ProD2 could be a good move for him

Hopefully the worst of CSM's problems are solved now. They had a very large squad so they managed to stay competitive even when they lost like half of their players.

Vlaicu could be useful to any club due to his excellent kicking and versatility (since he can cover three positions). He had a good RWC, with some memorable moments like the disallowed try against France, the decisive long-range penalty against Canada or the accurate long pass that created the last try of Apostol in the Italy game. I heard that he had offers from foreign clubs but he was still negotiating his wages (he was rumored to be one of the top earners in the Superliga and I guess he won't accept a lower deal).

There are a few other interesting players still at CSM like prop Alex Gordas, the versatile Kamil Sobota, the three back rowers (V. Dragos, Adrian Ion and Alex Mitu), wing Jack Cobden or fullback Atelea Okati.

The better team won but CSM Bucuresti put up a gallant fight on a really muddy pitch.

Baia Mare - Steaua 19-13
Tries: Sean Morrell / Silviu Vasiliu

A much close match but the most physical team won due to the conditions, it has been raining for days.
This is the first match where I saw young fullback Stratila start and play against good opposition. I think Howells was right to bet on him for the national team, he is a good defender, reliable under high balls and he likes to run with the ball from deep like Fercu. Surely a big prospect for the Oaks.

Next weekend the final of the Superliga will be played in Baia Mare between the home team and Saracens Timisoara. The pitch there held up well today despite the awful conditions.

The 3rd place playoff of the Superliga has been relocated to the Ghencea Stadium in Bucharest since it made no sense for two Bucharest-based teams to travel to Baia Mare (also, due to the very bad weather, the planned double-header in Baia Mare could have ruined the pitch ahead of the big final). The match will be played tomorrow at 13.00 local time, live on TVR2 and www.rugbytv.ro

well done for romania in the world cup. just a quick one about the final of csm and super liga. does this mean a lot of foreigners will leave the super liga with all rumors going around?

If you mean the foreigners at CSM, most of them have left already. The others (Sola, Cobden and a few young Tongans) apparently want to stay. The total number of foreigners in the Superliga might increase next season if the number of teams will be expanded to 10, especially players who accept low wages like some of the Tongans or Moldovans, but we'll see.

thank you for the reply dragos. do you think that be good thing for romanian rugby when clubs will just sign young Romanians? and grow some more talent in Romania.

I think it would be good to have a mix of young Romanian players and some quality foreigners who can improve the standard of the league and expose our guys to a different play style. But the best thing right now in my opinion would be to increase the number of Superliga clubs, which is exactly what the FRR is trying to do.

I also think that the FRR should establish a dedicated club for young players in the Superliga, funded by the union. This club could play on the Arcul de Triumf Stadium, which is owned by the FRR so it would cost nothing. It should sign various youngsters from the junior national teams who find it very hard to earn a place in the Superliga clubs, to give them some first division experience. After they prove themselves, the youngsters should be released for free as soon as they are wanted by another Superliga club or a foreign one and replaced with other emerging talents. Maybe 2-3 foreign players with a lot of experience could be added to teach them some different skills but it's not a must.

I don't think it would cost much to run such a club (the youngsters would just earn basic contracts) but it would have a major impact on the development of our rugby, the FRR must be really blind not to do it.

And probable teams for the final

Timisoara Saracens
1. Gigi Militaru
2. Eugen Capatana
3. Alexandru Tarus

Florin Vlaicu has signed for Calvisano, apparently he had offers from other clubs but the one from the Italian club was the best contract-wise.

In his last match at CSM Bucuresti, Vlaicu was decisive in the 3rd playoff victory against Steaua. CSM won 21-8, a victory against the odds for these unpaid players who managed the best result in the history of the club. Winger Marian Ispir scored a double, with Vlaicu adding the rest of the points, Toupou scored Steaua's try. This is an amazing performance for CSM given their dramatic circumstances, all the players were very determined, coach Danie de Villiers and captain Adrian Ion did great to keep them motivated.
