RBS 6 Nations - Wales vs Scotland (12-02-2012, 15:00)

Interesting game, Wales definitely not looking as good as they're hyped up to be at all, Scotland looking like they could have the wooden spoon this year. Feeling a bit more optimistic about the Wales/England game in a fortnight.

Problem with Wales seems to be that they can't do their most effective line breaking/attacking play in the Scots 22.

Very silly by the Scottish in getting two yellow cards as well.

Not sure about Poite's refereeing of the the breakdown, I can't help but feel we would have had a better advantage had he been more stringent.
Also having Sam/Justin play would have helped.

Not really. Can't have game like last week every week.

Wales problem today was that disruptions was a major issue in terms in injuries. Not only that but Wales were not clinical enough when they had the ball, aimless kicking, knocking ball on, Phillips not getting the ball out to the backs and failing to give sympathetic passes for players with more speed to possibly score e.g. John Davies --> Cuthbert and some odd calls admittedly for both teams by Potie today especially at the breakdown.

The defence was outstanding today, really was good. To soak up pressure like that and not allow a flow of points was impressive. Halfpenny, Cuthbert and Davies had stellar games in the back but Gethin Jenkins was at the forefront of everything today for Wales.

A good performance but room for improvement.

Enjoyable game. Scotland played well, and really put some good running rugby together in the fourth quarter.

I feel a bit mixed about Wales' performance. I thought Phillips was poor, getting caught at the back of rucks, and being too slow getting the ball out. Priestland's kicking out of hand was very poor. We had a tough time of it up front where Warburton was a big loss. I'm also not sold on Ryan Jones at 4 and Shingler at 7. Both had very good games, but along with Lydiate, they all played blindside flanker roles (although all slightly different). We lacked a little physicality without a genuine lock at 4, and we lacked a poacher at 7. Lydiate was simply fantastic for his first game back. As Cymro said, Gethin Jenkins was good, really getting involved at the ruck, and putting in some very important tackles.

In the backs, Roberts struggled to get into the game, although he had a big influence in that 15 min spell where Wales opened the gap. Davies had another very strong game, although a couple of mistakes possibly cost Wales two tries. He overrun Roberts in the opening couple of minutes, and gave a poor pass out to Cuthbert towards the end. I feel he still goes himself a little too often, but overall he should be pleased with his perdormance. Pitty North went off injured, hopefully he's fit for the England match. Cuthbert certainly made up for the loss of North though, great game from him today. Halfpenny too was great. A little wobbly under the high ball, but finished off two tries, and kicked immaculately. Still not sold on Hook at fullback.

Lots to work on, but I think it showed alot that Wales could soak up the pressure for much of the game, but explode to life for 15 min and score 24 points to put the game out of sight.

Our situation with Ryan, Lydiate, and Shingler was from injuries/bans, hopefully unlikely to occur again.
I thought Roberts looked more fit and eager to get the ball going forward, and will hopefully improve further.

True. Alun-Wyn, Warburton and Tipuric should be back for the England game. Things start to look much more balanced then. Unfortunately for Ryan, even after two great performances he'll probably find himself on the bench for that game, alongside Tipuric to cover the second/back rows.

Jesus the welsh have got two wins in a row now from experienced players dropping the ball into touch. To be honest I don't think the Welsh were much worse today than last week, the Scots came up and defended aggressively unlike the Irish last week and if that try had been given and Cusiter not dropped the ball to touch Scotland would have won, quite like last week, had Bowe not dropped into touch and Davies got a red Ireland would have won. I'm not sure this Welsh team are all they're cracked up to be. I'd gladly be wrong though because their style of play is superb.

ginger 8 , thanks , what for ? i must've missed it :(
Hands in the ruck, or slowing the ball down or whatever - Surprised the card came so late considering Poite gave the "final warning" a while before hand

Hook once more.
Ah, I remember that - three man overlap but he dummies and runs face first into a forward instead

That was good. Nice to have a game without my nerves being torn up all game.

Once again sin bins are massive in regards to the result. On this occasion Scotland can't really have any complaints with either and I'm very pleased that we showed some clinical finishing when given the chance.

Phillips was poor, he's got back into the habit of stepping laterally before passing and either got into trouvé himself or gave the backs less time to move it. Cuthbert had a far better game today, looked dangerous which ball in hand in loose play. Lydiate was awesome all game as per usual

Scotland played well too, it shows how you can play without Parks (there's my mandatory dig at Parks done) in the side. The back row, Rennie especially was all over the field and was Scotland's MOM. If it was t for some sloppy play in the 22 the game would have been closer.

This Hogg geezer looks very promising, got safe hands and pace in abundance.

Matthew Rees as well. Hook to fullback I am assuming; hopefully North will be fit, though.
So pleased to see Dan get stuck in right after injury. He puts in 100% every match, and although Ryan has been great, we need to keep Lydiate in the starting 15.

Centre partnership still not good enough. De Luca has done well for Edinburgh his season, had his chance now, hopefully will be dropped. There was no need for that daft crock of sh*te (although I do feel there was a deliberate knock on by the Welsh prior to it, but I digress)

Ansbro is well thought of by Robinson, so hopefully that is enough to get NDL out.

Whether at 13, 11 or 15, Hogg has to start. SLamont did well tOday but sill played like a winger in a distributing channel, we need a ball player at inside centre, especially if we do pursue an expansive game plan. My backline line-up for the next game would be:

9 Mike Blair
10 Laidlaw
11 Evans/ S Lamont
12 Matt Scott
13 Ansbro
14 Jones
15 Hogg

Thought Blair and Hogg made a huge difference when they came on.Blair was far more positive than Cusiter who seemed to spend most of his time pointing to the breakdown and looking at the ref.Hogg looks a wonderful talent. Both should have been on from the start.

Well done to both teams for putting on another good display. Like I said the Scots pack troubled us more and they were all over Phillips who's distribution was poor. Phillips game is more suited to the Ireland's and England's of this six nations. Was impressed with our defence today because they were put under huge amounts of pressure at times. We were clinical in the first 20 minutes of the second half but gave away silly possession in the first half when we should of put points on the board . Overall very pleasing , let's hope we havn't seen the last of North in this championship.

totally agree about Nick de Luca, he has 31 caps now at international level and has never impressed so should move aside for Ansbro and Scott to have chances, I felt if he didn't make his foul so obvious so there was a little doubt it wouldn't of been a yellow

however don't agree with shifting Sean Lamont out of the centres, after years of the lumbering Morrison, Henderson and Dewey he has looked by far the most capable of breaking the line and bringing some dynamism to the backline

Blair has to now start, and should have done on form from the beginning of the tournament to be honest

likewise Hogg should start at 15 or on the wing, but I would remove Lee Jones who has looked out of his depth at international rugby and play Rory Lamont or Si Dazzle ahead of him

for me the backline should be:

9. M Blair
10. G Laidlaw
11. M Evans
12. S Lamont
13. J Ansbro
14. R Lamont / S Danielli
15. S Hogg

20. C Cusiter
21. D Weir
22. M Scott

I only said move S Lamont out with the proviso of Scott coming in, otherwise he is still the best option there.

Problem is that isn't saying much. It's all good breaking the line, but there is little point if he can't offload or spot a pass. End of the day he is a winger playing a crash ball roll at centre more effectively than our other centres can. This brings a problem the Welsh exploited, realising the ball won't get passed 12 or chipped over them, they could rush up and close down any attack without fear.

A ball player who can pass, kick and keep the ball in contact will always be better than someone who can only do the latter of the three.
