RBS 6 Nations - Ireland vs Wales - (05/02/2012 -15:00)

Don't disagree with you there really. He's improved a hell of a lot over the past year or two, especially in his scrummaging ability. Having a decent tight-head alongside him has helped with that. I just don't rate him as highly as some on here seem to. We all overate our own teams players, so that's probably fair aswell. I pointed out that in his last international game, that also happened to be against us, he was poor. Adam Jones may not have shoved him back 10m in every scrum, but that doesn't really happen anymore, because most just end in free-kicks and penalties, as they did in that game. Healy also knocked the ball on close to the Wales line, totally unforced (although there was a penalty advantage at the time if I remember right), and he missed that cruicial tackle on Davies. He may have been excellent in the HC, but international rugby is a step-up, and in his last game he was poor. I'm sure he won't be as poor again.

I completely agree, some people think he has become a scrummaging master but that is not the case. He holds his own pretty well but isn't as good as some people think. I do think your being a bit harsh on him by just focusing on the QF but obviously that was the last time Ireland and Wales played so I don't blame you.

That would happen if the boot was on the other foot ... and has happened in this thread on both sides.

I wasn't concentrating on the Irland - Wales game because it was the last time we played each other, but because it was Ireland's last international game.

I think if you had read my post post correctly you would have seen that I said I understood why Dull used the OF and I said that he was right to use that fixture to compare each team.

I did ... and that was my interpretation on your take and others in this thread. Might need to look at it again.

In other words I was saying that using the Ireland v Wales game as a way of judging a player is correct and "I don't blame" him for doing so!

Only took 25 minutes for the BBC pundits to mention the red card against Wales in the World Cup; typical.

1. Awesome for Leinster, just so far in his international career he can't goal kick, not sure why as he's shown he's capable with Leinster, I'm sure he will become a true international fly half at some point

2. I'll leave that one for the Irish members to debate

3. Couldn't scrum, until they replaced Buckley with Ross and Healy's scrummaging improved a great deal

4. True, now even more so now that Shane has gone, Halfpenny is the only Welsh sized person in the backs, pretty sure this must be the biggest backline of all time

I think Olyy was taking the p*ss;)

Maybe make us a bit more optimistic.

Really looking forward to this match, if only to wash away the memories of the Calcutta cup match :p

To be honest, I'm hoping for a draw - couldn't stand the gloating of whichever set of fans wins

But then you'll have to cope with both fans gloating :p

Realistically this game is as close to 50/50 as makes no difference.
As others have said I think the crucial battle will be in the back row. Ireland have better ball carriers there but Wales have a genuine 7 so it's going to come down to how individuals perform, with Warburton's performance probably being the decisive factor.
I'd fancy Ireland to shade it in terms of the tight five given the Welsh injuries, but I think Wales have clear superiority in the backs, particularly in midfield as Roberts is simply a monster of a man and BOD won't be there.
Really hoping Ireland manage to improve their attacking play because even when they were playing well in the world cup they never particularly impressed with ball in hand.
After all my rambling going to predict/hope for an Irish win, but thats only really based on me being Irish and the match being in Dublin. :p

Well I don't think Scotland or England are going to cause either Ireland or Wales any sleepless nights

Our gloating would/will be better.:D

Is it possible to get a vbookie for this?

Quite looking forward too this match - not sure which way it will go. I'm going to be backing Wales, as I really enjoyed the way the played during the RWC. The loose-forward battle is going to be a highlight for me - Wales have the better balanced loose-forward trio (and I expect they will have the edge at the breakdown, as they have a genuine 7), but Ireland do have some 'beasts' in their trio!

This game is going to be all about the small margins and the style that game becomes. Possession for Ireland is going to be key as with possession they can unleash their big ball carriers in the pack while the backs can create space and hit the gaps. If Wales have possession they will simply be direct in the backs building momentum and sucking in the Irish defence. Both teams are going to have to play a good kicking game and we saw how good Wales were at that in the World Cup. Its going to come down to Set Pieces, the breakdown and I think most of all the performances of the halfs backs. Which ever teams 9 and 10 control the game the best and use the ball most effectively will win the game.
