Q & A with Alastair - The Answer Thread

HB and also french previews have confirmed that yes, Hard difficulty is significantly more challenging. I'd imagine that the medium difficulty has been tweaked up a little also.

Excellent! hopefully that will help longevity of the game and make us all play it until the next release 12/18 months later

I understand your feelings there, but all I can say is that we at TRF will do what we are able to. I'm sure HB would love to expand their offering in any future ***les. :)

Yeah I can see you guys are doing your best / making up for a deficiency in the game's online offering and like I said thats good. I'd be happy to throw my hat in the ring as a player in that I'm just nervous on the impact of this to the game's longevity and wider appeal.

I went onto a 2 year old game the other day and tried playing online and there was 150 players online. This on a game that used to be in the thousands, succeeding in building online longevity and thus keeping your fanbase hooked in to the next version of the game when it comes out is the new frontier with games and not all succeed at it..

Perhaps a TRF league could lead to a monthly challenger/s to take on the might of HB??
(winner gets to chose a feature for the next game ;) )

Yup, all your concerns are the same issues I have with the online option. Not having at least a basic leader board and a penalty against rage quitters is definitely going to affect the game long term.

Asked AJ two questions in relation to this problem and hoping to get a response.

AJ just wanted to say thank you. I have not noticed to many people commenting on it, but the fact that you guys have prototyped almost every aspect of the game to try and better develop, build, and design the game is such a great thing. It means you guys wanted the world (still do I bet) for this game and looked at every angle before continuing with the chosen product. It also sounds like with all of this prototyping that this game can improve over the coming years in leaps and bounds.

Thanks again, was shocked to see that you had been posting at 1AM Nova Scotia time, don't you need as much sleep as you can get for these next few months.

It's been stated many times that the A.I. defence is much better on higher difficulty, but what I'd really like to know is if the A.I. attack is any good?

Can they break down your defence 'n' score tries?

Awesome question, all I can say is that others need to show they want this answered too! Put me down for an answer on that! I hope the attack is more offensive for sure!

Alastair,

Are you able to play with the Roof Shut on the Millennium Stadium?

Yes, indeedy. I can imagine how much you guys who have made Rugby '04, '05, '06 and '08 have heard a few of us guys going on about your games over the years as though we really know our stuff, thinking "Boy I'd love to set these guys straight!".

I'm not sure who I want to try and beat more, one of you guys or Gay_Guy! :)

To be honest you guys will probably destroy us. I have been primarily playing my Online Rugby on PS3 over the course of development.

Passing is done with L1/R1 or on 360 LB/RB - same as the old games.
Ok, thanks. I can switch my plugs about, the trouble will be remembering where B is when I'm in the menus. :p

(Passing was X and B on 06, in case you've forgotten.)

And how glorious that was compared to using the shoulder buttons. 08 was horrid with the PS2 setup.

euphoria is so awesome its hard to descibe ,no play, tackle, if you could do it, ruck maul ,scrum, no two would ever be the same, line outs and mauls omg, ,not the animated zzzzz we have now.

even the basic back breaker engine could work,if only BB had lateral pass lol.
,,i will let you do the next version on this engine,to get our baby to perfection, and hope all goes well., but the one after, there will be no excuse not to use it,or another physic based engine.

one thing which sometimes gets to me is at kick offs, where kickers use different feet to kick the ball in different directions. In reality, someone like Dan Carter only ever uses his left boot for kick offs, regardless of where he wants to plant the ball. Has this been changed in RWC so that they kicker only uses his preferred foot??

would imagine there will be a full game trailer out about 3-4 weeks before release, and i make it about 7 weeks left. soooooo within the next 2-3 weeks we should have pretty much every bit of info left to release. first bit of video footage is gonna be amazing!

With the button mashing style rucks will we be able to play for extended periods of time?
I worry that people's thumbs will die a painful death, first.

Sorry if this has already been answered somewhere.

It's not button mashing, it's pressing it to fill a bar
If you mash it, you run the risk over filling the bar and infringing at the ruck (or so I understand)

Not sure if this has already been asked, but when a ruck has formed and the scrum half is no where near the break down, does someone else fill in? Because in 08 nobody would act as a stand in scrum-half and it would take an age for the scrum half to reach the ruck and possession would often be turned over.
