Next Generation Gaming

I feel the switch got away with it because it was new, different and not directly competing against the PS5/Series on price. Not only are other companies making handhelds now, but they're close to the PS5/Series on price with all the same issues they had at launch - the games are not ready.

The steamdeck looks more appealing personally.
me too, hence grabbing one, have still not seen any games that would really hook me....nothing i cant play on the steam deck...often free when emulating...but there are loads more i can get on steam...and if you wait for sales its much cheaper in the long run

I don't think Nintendo "got away with it", they still produce some of the best games out there, and software sells hardware

im curious what your thinking of, i say this as a nintendo fan boy....but they have a couple of great games each generation (zelda, mario)...but then they drop off pretty quick (far from gaming cultural phenomenon's we see with other consoles)...i feel at least since Wii the hardware very much pushed sales....wii was innovative and great family fun....switch changed mobile gaming...i think they mistake theyre making now is that as an evolution of switch one they really need the games to show why its worth is and im not sure theyve hit the mark

I don't think they do produce some of the best games. They're living of a (earned) legacy of producing quality games, but that's basically it.

I wonder...with the PS4, Sony pushed for a America to be their main focus. After all these tariffs etc, they might look elsewhere.

i cant help but feel if Mario Kart is your big headline game...youve missed the mark, love me some mario Kart...but i very much doubt the experience is enough to justify needing a new console

It's open world because everything has to be bigger now (🙄) apparently. It's dumb, but that's triple AAA game development right now. They'll keep upping the budgets and wonder why they can't make a profit when prices increase.

On this discussion in general it worth remembering the computer gaming is extremely diversified in terms of style beyond the AAA PC/PS/Xbox scene. Even then the whole live service model I've never been in to but lots of people love their Destiny or COD or Fortnite.

Its an odd one at The Game Awards truly open world games do alright but Breath of the Wild was the last winner possibly Elden Ring but I've not played it. But strong narrative through gameplay and environment is the usual winner. One of the reason I'm not massive fan of true open world games is because of busy work. That isn't to say there is not outstanding examples of good ones but I imagine God of War (2018) cost a fraction of Spider-Man of Assassins Creed Odyssey and even if it did not the reason why it was all timer is because they could focus on the gameplay and enviroment itself within its story rather than generating busy work.

I feel like the big three are running out of road in the current direction. I had hoped Nintendo were smarter, but it seems they've also gone into the position of "bigger and better" when it really isn't needed or possible. PC/Laptops seem to have the best as you can have games of any scale without the high entry requirements etc.
