Crusaders captain Richie McCaw has suffered a stress fracture to his right foot and he will miss the first six weeks of the Super Rugby season.

McCaw said he had seen a foot and ankle surgeon and has been booked in for surgery to insert a small screw into a bone in his foot.

"The injury is obviously disappointing, but it's not likely to be one that will bother me in the long term," said the All Blacks skipper.

"I'll have the operation and then get on with my rehab and look forward to turning out for the Crusaders when I'm given the all-clear by the medical staff."

McCaw had been scheduled to play his first match of the year on March 4 against the Waratahs after sitting out the first two rounds of the Super 15 as part of a rotation policy for All Blacks in a World Cup year.

Good for the Hurricanes, bad for the likely winners.

Bad news for a top player- definitely not the type of injury you want in a world cup year (not that one should ever want an injury)

Might be a wee bit selfish, but he misses the Sharks match

Geng dang it! ... are well, if it had to happen, better now than later in the season ... I guess Ritchie's misfortune is an opportunity to see how good Matt Todd is

Rest of S15 breathes an immesne sigh of relief upon hearing this news :p
as a fan of Richie I am disappointed :( I love seeing how well this guy can push the boundaries its amazing

Even worse is that he will come back more refreshed, just in time for the run up to the knock-out stages of the Super15.

Gives the Blues more of a chance on the 19th Feb!
Mind you- there are big wraps on this Matt Todd.. should be a good game

Yea, not too worried since Todd and the eldest Whitelock can provide enough cover. If anything, this may mean more game time for Jack since SamW can play 6 and I don't think Blackadder will be moving Read from 8 throughout the season. The King will come back refreshed for the second half of the season and hungry for more.
