Cant see it happening to be honest, one rough season cant be enough to make them want to ditch the Canes

Also, in the case of Nonu I would have to say I would rather see an emerging guy given the spot who might stick aorund for a while rather than someone who is feilding overseas contracts every week...we need Nonu eight years ago not Nonu now.

I guess its more a case of 12 months ago no one wld have even thought to make it up but now it may be completely unrealistic but the general idea of us luring "names" down south isn't

Yeah, I think if Nonu is going to move at all, it will be to France. I can't see why a player who has a starting position in one NZ franchise would shift to another unless they are moving back home, or that there's disharmony in the team they are currently playing for.

... The Highlanders need a goal kicker who starts regularly, and kicks the goals regularly ... but then so do most of the other NZ teams :D

Honestly.. WHy dont the Super Rugby teams actually start getting talent from WITHIN their region?

How can any highlanders fan being cheering Slade and Sopoaga who are from the Canterbury and Wellington NPC regions.

I think sooner or later the Super Rugby Teams of NZ have got to start recruiting players from within their own Regions... Would be a good way to get good support..

Just look at the Crusaders.. Majority are all from the Cantabs/Tasman region.

Also.. as for the article... i think its ********.

Yeah but many from the Canterbury and Tasman teams aren't from the region either, and four in the Crusaders squad are from the Hawkes Bay ... Player migration is nothing new in New Zealand, it happened even in the amateur days

... I actually think its good that the best players get opportunities at other franchises, it means that they get game time rather than sitting on the bench or missing out all together

I wonder if anyone had a 'Island of Origin' idea for NZ rugby pop up before?

Have the South Island vs North Island.

Eligibility depends on your first NPC team you played for.

Surely the South Island would win it.

Except McCaw, Fruean, SBW, Guildford, (Sam, George, Adam) Whitelock, Dagg...etc, all of whom were recruited outside the Cantab/Tasman area...

It use to be a regular fixture back in the amateur days ... there was actually quite a bit of public support for a North V South match instead of the All Blacks playing Fiji

Yes.. But the crux of my post is that they PLAY for the CANTABS and TASMAN Provincial teams.. and all of them now play in the Crusaders.

I really dislike it when guys like Berkuist, comes from Auckland to play for the Crusaders.

I dont know why they are playing Fiji.... Fiji will probably not be able to field a full strength team due to the bans imposed by NZ..

A South Island vs North Island clash would get huge interest.. and would easily fill the NZ stadia.

Heck they could have even tried playing a Charity match against Japan.

Add Read, Flynn, Maitland, Thorn, Hall, Fotuali'i, Berquist..... yep the Crusaders are full of homegrown talent ;)

Ok I understand. It is ok to take players from outside your region, just as long as you sign them for an ITM Cup side inside your franchise region first.

I see what you're saying but at least 17 of the highlanders are from otago or southland (not sure of some of the guys), these big names have just been brought in where it was deemed there was not the depth or tallent

to be clear, i dont think anyone thinks this is going to happen, i just found it refreshing the idea was even worth a mention

Yep, thats bout right. But knowing NZ, there is the usual excess of talents in other Regions, therefore the necessity of putting those players into other Franchise areas... tis the modern game.

Just have to look at Man Utd to see that homegrown talent isnt really needed to build a loyal fan base.
