June Internationals: South Africa v Italy (08/06/2013)

Thanks Yoe.................have to wait until he comes on as sub......he joins BO next season!!

IS EVERYBODY IN SA CALLED BOTHA ?!!!!! ffs !!!

and that was some nice playing from Italy...they'll lack the finishing touch often though....

pretty crazy how the momentum within a match may shift so brutally. Not saying the Italians are dominating now, but the Boks had 20 points already like 5minutes in !...then just stayed there...and now it's 20-7 !
Thought this would go into the 40's for SA for sure...

Takes a bit of a while for teams to get into it sometimes..

JJ Engelbrecht has been good for the boks especially in the first half, JDV M.I.A today....

Back to our kicking game i see, momentum has definitely shifted now....

That scrum........

What
...
Tha
....
fuuuuuuuuuck ?!!!

:D viva italiaaa !!

I am very happy with our backline. Our forwards were a bit meh, but I only expect us to improve. I'm guessing Piet van Zyl is going to be called up. I'd also have Nyakane and Oosthuizen start over Beast and Jannie, but maybe that's a bit unrealistic ;)

Willie le Roux... you bloody beauty. Admittedly I had my doubts about Arno Botha but geez that kid can play!

This is my ratings for todays boks:

1.Beast Mtawarira - 6.8 very solid with ball carrying and some solid tackles on defence, only thing was he was going backwards with the scrums in the 2nd half, due probably to the Italians changing their front row but shouldnt be an excuse.

2.Adriaan Strauss - 6.5 Did his job well but not many of his robust ball carrying that we used too.

3.Jannie Du Plessis - 6.0 Was very solid in the 1st half probably one of the best forwards, but like Beast went backwards in the 2nd half scrums and just MIA in the 2nd half.

4.Eben Etzebeth -5.5 Did nothing wrong in the game, but nothing flash either, some good line-out steals too though.

5.Juandre Kruger - 5.0 MIA today.

6.Francois Louw - 6.8 Only one steal today leading to the penalty, was solid on defence though.

7.Arno Botha - 5.0 Gave away a few penalties and we did not see the ball carrying people have been raving on about, maybe next time? Lappies Labuschagne?

8.Pierre Spies - 6.0 Always seems to lose his form in the Bok Jersey, did nothing wrong but was MIA. Wasnt who we've seen with the Blue Bulls.

9.Jano Vermaak - 6.5 Good first debut, got caught a few times around the rucks, probably needs to get the ball away a little quicker.

10.Morne Steyn - 6.0 Was decent , got the backline going in the first half and controlled the game well but needs to take the line sometimes.

11.Bjorn Basson - 7.0 Good game, showed his pace, disappointed with the sin bin though.

12.Jean De Villiers - 5.0 Probably the weakest link in our backline today, only scored that one try credit to Basson but good support from him.

13.JJ Engelbrecht - 7.5 My man-of-the-match today. Was brilliant, unlucky with that last chance for a try, great pace shown and will win more caps if he keeps it up.

14.Bryan Habana - 7.5 Was on fire today and couldve been my man of the match too.

15.Willie Le Roux - 7.0 Probably tried a little too much to impress but had a solid game at the back, would like to see him at 14 though where he has played most of this season.

Wont go to the reserves as none of them got any real game time to make a difference...

So overall an above-average performance with things still to work on.

Bjorn Basson a 7? Engelbrecht a 7.5? Jean De Villiers a 5? WTF are you smoking. Basson yellow card cost use 10 points momentum and went for intercepts the whole game together with Engelbrecht leaving someone else to cover for them. Then that butchered tries. Two of them.

Bjorn and JJ scored good tries and Bjorn created one for JDV.... JJ crossed the advantage line on almost every occassion he got the ball!!! Did you even watch the match?? Atleast they created something out of nothing which none of the other players except Bryan Habana could do!!!

A bit of a mixed bag this game for both teams.

I suppose you'd expect some rustiness from the Bok team what with this being our 1st game of the year and with little to no preparation time and a lot of new combinations but damn our forwards need to make a big step up if we want to get ahead of the curve. Flow had a good game but the rest all have a blotch on their sheets particularly the key players in the set pieces. Botha had a decent debut but I still feel we missed Alberts and I'd still like to see Labuschagne in the mix (at the expense of Spies who keeps staying put on okay performances ala Kirchner). 6Flow, 7Alberts, 8Botha, 19Labuschagne for me.

Vermaak didn't impress at all. The silver lining is that Van Zyl has been called up. The question now is will the form 9 have to wait in line the 'incumbents' Pienaar and Hougaard? Hopefully he'll get a bench spot next week. Habana was on fire and though they made mistakes I am happy enough with the efforts of Engelbrecht and Le Roux; the intent was there for more than the usual 10 minutes and it was good to see players 13 and up have an impact on the game for once. All had good moments and I'd hope the guys will sort out the bad when they get more settled. What I almost liked mosst about Le Roux's debut is his commitment on defense in stopping Parrisse close to the line and his commitment in the air over the try line while I almost expect effectiveness on attack from him.

Apart from the capitulation in the set pieces and at the restarts a decent effort and considerng the likes of JPP, Alberts, PS du Toit and Goosen were unavailable and guys like Van Zyl, Serfontein and Labuschagne are yet to make their appearence I am still very hopeful for the rest of the year.

pretty good result for SA in retrospect. This will go down in the history books as another hiding for Italy against the mighty Boks, when it was a lot closer than it looks according to the scoreline really...
some good elements by Italy, the scrum SURE came with them on the trip :p, and they started in a clumsy/rusty way but rebounded very well and actually were within range of catching up to the Boks' 20 points...
SA would've won no matter what, but some of that good form from Italy is becoming less and less rare....FORZA ITALIA !

I for one have to disagree regarding the loose forwards. Arno Botha was immense in his debut game. His presence was fantastic, he caused a lot of turnovers by holding the player up causing a maul, and then creating a turnover. Pierre Spies did a lot of grunt work, finally! He even caused a turnover at ruck time at a period in the 2nd half when we only had 7% posession.

Our locks, and Jannie were pedestrians. Eben made a few good runs in the first half, and then disappeared.

Jano's service was at times slow, but that will improve with play time, pity he tore his hamstring. Glad to see Piet van Zyl get a call up.

Our backs were great, for a first run to have so much pace in attacks, and creativity, not just by Willie, speaks a lot about the gameplan. Morne played flat and gave his backs goid front foot ball.

Overall, I'm very happy with the performance with just 3 days preparation. Now we should just build up on this. Congrats to Heyneke an his team for some new innovative play style we have been waiting for from the bokke.

I'd have 6. Flouw 7. Lappies 8. Botha for the next game. Pienaar will probably start but hopefully we'll see van Zyl come off the bench.

Pienaar didn't play all that bad when he came on though.

Fairly happy with the result but some aspects were a bit wobbly.
Or scrum was a major concern, and our set-piece in general not quite up to standard.

Habana always seems to pull out the flair these days in big games, but he did make a few basic errors.
Engelbregt looked exciting, he butchered one try in particular and probably could have done better with another opportunity, but nice to see a a Bok centre with actual attacking intent.
Willie was good, considering how he always tries the same chips in Cheetahs (albeit successfully) I was a little worried he had become a bit of a one trick pony but showed he still has great vision and passing ability.
I didn't think Vermaak was terrible, but he did seem to lack a bit of situational awareness at times (but perhaps our forwards didn't look after him as well as they should have).
Spies didn't offer anything as a ball carrier, and I feel we can find better back rows without him included (sorry Heineken just my opinion).
Botha and Flouw were good, have to agree that Lappies at 7 and Botha at 8 might be worth trying.

Anyway relatively happy with how everything worked out I have to say that HM haters have to eat their words. If we have problems they aren't from stagnant coaching or selection.
