Ireland v England

Mmmm, thread's getting sparky early on.

I predict a riot at Croker.

John Hayes to cry for 80 mins. Bomb goes off under Johnson's seat, but he thinks it's that dodgy guinness he had the night before.

We'll win comfortably at Joke Park.[/b]

Prickenham
Aren't we clever?

In my opinion, player-wise, Ireland have England beaten in every possition besides at scrum half and loosehead.
But in rugby how a team works together is generally more important than individual talent.
That being said I also believe this Irish team has worked togetehr much better than England so far. They're also better at thinking on their feet. I predict a reasonably comfortable win for Ireland.

I would take O'Leary over Ellis anyday. Sheridan is over rated and Horan under rated, Sheridan still has the edge but only just. Horan has been superb in the first 2 6N games, had Castrogiovanni in his pocket (I expected Castro to have the upper hand at scrum time and Marcus to give away the stupid penalties, but the opposite happened!). England do have the upper hand at 12 though, And have an outstanding line out forward in Kennedy but as you said it is a team game.

Bits of Martin Johnson that survived the blast and landed on the pitch refuse to step aside and yet again, the Irish President has to walk in the mud :(

I still predict an emphatic win for Ireland by the way which will set up a thrilling match against Wales...

Sheridan was good but ever since 2006 when he first rampaged onto the scene he has just gotten progressively worse and has nosedived since RWC 2007.

He is a very Steven Harminson kind of guy. Tall, soft and as nice as punch off the field, as outspoken and rude as Casper the ghost and yet since the highs of his introduction has gradually lost confidence in his own ability which has negated his threat ever so slowly to the point now where even people who can't even scrum/Australia are running rings around him.

Its a bit like Lewis Hamilton or Nigel Mansell having a crisis of confidence and being raced off the track by Maureen out of TV's Driving School.

That's what I miss most about England being good - just that feeling of superiority over everyone else. The fact that any opposition could yap for as long as they liked about how the English were all arseholes, but come gametime we'd ram it back down their throats. I have lots of respect for extreme arrogance/ confidence that can be backed up.[/b]

Oooooo I was soooo close to jumping all over that one.

why should a British person care about another country's heirarchical system? We've a history of ignoring that sort of thing... the Irish of all people should not have been surprised.[/b]

This one made me laugh though. Quality post. However Britain aint a country is it? Is this some subtle way of sharing the responsibility with your Scot and Welsh brothers? Surely this is an English thing no? Wheres the pride!

Yep, absoloutely right. The Weslh and Scottish wouldn't have done it because they're not ********. Unlike the English.[/b]

Jesus thats like twice in two days I agree with you. Who would have thunk it eh?

That is just grotesque.

You do know how silly attaching statements of "feeling of superiority" and "********" to an entire frickin' nation of 50 odd million does sound incredibly silly.

Please don't take what a couple of thousand middle class luvvies say from their Ivory towers in the Home Counties as gospel for everyone from Lands end to the Scottish borders. Don't confuse pride and longing for past glories as expectations for the automatic steamrolling of the opposition (in which case the Welsh would be just as guilty as we are).

Living in Scotland taught me a lot of things. Mainly that there is a hell of a lot of misunderstandings between the English and the other nations of the British Isles because everyone has drifted apart that much. The Scots and Welsh always think that the English are haughty and arrogant whereas the English always think that the Scots and the Welsh have a massive chip on their shoulder. Both are partly true but only are these traits exhibited in the big city urban classes.

If people talked to each other a bit more and partied with each other a bit more, they'd find that these myths are largely that: myths. There is no conspiracy against the Scots, the Scots don't sponge off of the English taxpayer, the Welsh do have an important part to play and shag humans, not sheep, humans. Not everyone in Ulster is a terrorist or even Christian!

Bottom line, you go and meet the real people of England with their motley mix of nationalities such as the British Asians of the Midlands and the North who wear their England cricket tops with pride for example and then come back to me and see if you can find some evidence to back your decades out of date assumption of arrogance that is the esprit de corps of the minority of England.

The majority? We're not arrogant, just firmly rooted in cynical reality. End of discussion.

EDIT: Why is it every other year I have to write a "Chill guys, can't we all get along" post for Ireland vs England?

Prestwick that was going well until you used the term British Isles - I f***ing hate that! That term has been debated hundreds of times throughout the history of teh Interweb, and I think the conclusion is British & Irish Isles. ;) (Usually comes after the English guy says well you hardly expect to name every individual group of Islands!)

Don't blame me, Munsterman, blame the Romans! ;)

And you do realise there are probably a couple million ancient Britons who have a huge beef with the Celts, Romans, Normans and Barbarians who flooded over here in the past 1500 years :p

thought the ancient britons were celts... anyway this all starts when the Anglo-saxons came to England and booted all the celts into the extreme parts of Britain. Blame Hengist and Horsa guys.

It's nothing to do with him being english, it's the fact he's a shithead, simple as and I don't really think the role of president here is too important
but what he did was completely disrespectful, something Woody would never have done[/b]
Wood and Johnson are incomparable.

One's a nice guy and a good former player for his principality, one is an all-time worldwide rugby great and a born winner.

don't be trying to confuse us with the Welsh.

wasnt wood world player of the year in 01 and a member of the international rugby hall of fame  thats just a silly thing to say

and possibly the highest scoring international hooker of all time (ahahah innuendo) but might be wrong on that one

Fifteen tries for Ireland, did he score any for the Lions I wonder? Woody was incredible, I doubt we will be lucky enough to have a player or a captain like him for a long time. Didn't he score a hat trick (or more) in a match as well?

Wood would have got into the English 2003 team. Says enough; he's the best hooker to have played in my lifetime. Like Johnson is the best lock.

That would be John Eales, surely. :p

no doubt Johnson is one of the top two locks ever and would get into the dream 15 of all time,

But woody vs Fitzpatrick.. very very tough

Meades and McBride might have something to say about that.
