Well put. Know exactly what you mean. Kind of.

As long as we get to the MS with the full prize at stake and Wales desperate to do us down.

I love how the Irish really tone down their GRAND SLAM (Yes, I said it!) chances.
If we were in your position right now, you'd hear no end of hype and speculation. With you lot it's just 'NO WAY ARE WE GONNA WIN THE YOU KNOW WHAT!!!!!"

Actually, what's with the insane amount of kicking from hand going on in this tournament? particularly from Ireland. Is this something to do with the new rules (which I still don't really know)? Cause there was around 5 minutes of the match today where kearney and armitage where just playing tennis over the other players heads. It was tedious! I've also noticed players kick to the opposition much more now rather than kicking to touch. It's such a shame to see Kearney kicking so much when he's such a talented runner with the ball. He's much more dangerous running at the opposition with space in front of him than just kicking the ball into the opposite fullbacks hands.

Ahhh Kidney has spent years doing that with Munster. But its understandable from our point. We do have a history of f***ing it up, or losing to scotland two weeks before the big "showdown". We all want to win it, we know its a possibility, but if I'm being honest I can see us beating Scotland and losing quite convincingly to Wales. We could beat you, jesus we might even beat you, but ...... well history says we probably wont.

So stop talking about the "YOU KNOW WHAT".

Come on guys, can we hear at least some positivity here?

You all sound like England won tonight!

There is something called the self-fulfilling prophecy or something like that (probably without spelling mistakes too).

I'm getting the feeling that NH fans do not have the cognative or social capacity to handle success. We either go way over the top, say "mission accomplished" and then spend 2 or 4 years in the wilderness or go completely into our shells and spend the rest of our days putting ourselves down.

Its one of those European things I guess. We don't seem to like success.

What's this "we" bit?

Ireland are here to become champions of Europe.

Going over the top, mission accomplished, and years in the wilderness are English things.

Do not misinterpret the wise nothings of the Enigma that is ...

Not from where I'm standing. I haven't really seen a "so far, so good" or "better to win ugly than not to win at all." While the anxious debate about players, how they perform, etc is perfectly fine, its being conducted as if Ireland lost against England! Its not the end of the world guys, chill..have a pint, savour the feeling of being the team to beat.

Really? Did you miss 2005 and last season with all the hyperbole? Furthermore, you were banging on an hour or two about about typing with your nose because you've worn away your hands in frustration about your team being in similar duldrums! Yeah we've done that as well but we're not the only ones.

When I said "mission accomplished", I mean this tendency for NH teams to either win a 6N championship or a grand slam, have a party and say "right, there we go! Mission accomplished! Time to go home guys!" And then waltz straight into a Summer tour on cloud nine only to be brought down in flames by the Southern Hemisphere.

We don't seem to get the concept of world domination. The South Hemisphere understand that while the Tri-Nations and Super 14 are immensely important, they are a means to an end and the end is being the best in the world. They use victory in the Tri Nations as a springboard to coming up here and having a field day. We up here however see the HEC and 6N purely as the end in itself. We win that and we don't really have to care about anything else beyond that unless its a World Cup year. The only time I've seen a NH team think beyond the usual cycle of 6N glory and Summer tour/Autumn international misery was Woodward's England between 2002 and 2003.

For all the petty bickering about who is more smug, moans the most or celebrates the most luridly, we're all pretty much the same in the NH. It is a strangely European sense of superiority and smugness tinged with self-confidence in image issues.

Anyway whats the problem?! Ireland won! They've got the form and the bottle to edge past Wales! If Ireland's watertight defence can get a hold on Roberts and Powell then its party time in Dublin!

Is it really so bad for people to dream?

well I'm certainly happy with the win, this match was always going to be a battle and it's one we won, we dominated the game but England's defence limited our chances, no shame in that, the major disappointment is O'Gara's place kicking.

another thing that ****** me off was that after O'Driscoll's drop goal the ref refused to go back and give the yellow card, I've seen it done before after advantage has been played so no reason why it shouldn't have happened yesterday.

I think it was Sir.Speedy who said that if Ireland play like they did yesterday then they've no chance in Cardiff, well I don't agree, we'll get through the gaps against Wales that we didn't against England, you'd think O'Gara will never place kick as badly again, and our defence was as good if not better than England's, granted Wales will offer more in attack but I still think we can cope. Let's remember as well that Wales offered very little in Paris.

Still though that's the first match down in a possible triple crown!

Stephen Jones yet again proves that his articles and ratings aren't even fit to wipe the arse of the nastiest, dirtiest skanger going.

He gives O'Driscoll 6/10, Heaslip 6/10, only rates Ferris' performance as a 7/10 yet he then gives Wallace and O'Leary who weren't spectacular yesterday 8/10. As for giving Easter 8/10 and Heaslip only 6 the Times really should be looking for a better quality of journalist for their rugby coverage.

Wiggy should be stood against a wall and shot.

England blew a golden opportunity to upset the odds and derail Irelands Grand Slam hopes in this match. They were the better team.

There's not much more to say really, England gave this game away, they should have scored anyother try (Tait you idiot), and not being down to 14 for 20mins would have helped!

I can't see Ireland winning the slam, because I can't see them beating Wales in Cardiff! They were terrible yesterday, the pressure destroyed everyone but O'Driscoll. O'Gara would have been more usefull sitting on the centre spot, how's he gonna cope in the Grand Slam match at the Millenium?

Basically, Wales have been a better team that Ireland, just that we were beaten by a French team who turned up! So Ireland are still favourites for the championship (obviously), but no grand slam I'm afraid, just haven't got the bottle!

completely agree. He's an arsehole who is always wrong.

My ratings:

Kearney 6, Bowe 4.5, O'Driscoll 8, Wallace 6, Fitzgerald 7, O'Gara 4, O'Leary 6, Heaslip 7, Wallace 6, Ferris 7, O'Connell 8, O'Callaghan 7, Hayes 6, Flannery 6, Horan 6.

Armitage 7, Sackey 6, Tindall 6, Flutey 7, Cueto 6, Flood 6, Ellis 6, Easter 5, Worsley 6, Haskell 6, Kennedy 6, Borthwick 6, Vickery 5, Mears 6, Sheridan 5.

I think overall that reflects the game - England were solid, but there were no standout performances and no one had absolute shockers.

Ireland were ordinary-poor yet had a few players doing great jobs which carried them through.

England's lack of ambition is down to our low expectations; it will come with confidence. I think we're capable of being every bit as good as Ireland, though, but they have a vital ingredient that we lack: world class players capable of stepping up when it matters. We saw that from O'Driscoll and O'Connell yesterday. Unfortunately, with the loss of Corry, Robinson, Lewsey and so on, there's been no one to step up and really grit in. Vickery's the one player we have with both the experience and ability to do so but so often he has failed, which is why he was not a good captain.

With good strong leadership comes discipline, and in the absence of anyone else in the team, Johnson really needs to bully players into behaving. So it's got to the stage where Care and Vickery (esp. Care for petulance) have to be dropped from the next game. A message needs to be sent out, it's got beyond a joke now it's underming what have been 2 brave and solid away performances against good teams.
