France v Wales, 09/02/13

What a come down from last week, two pretty crap games today, Scotland looked decent but everyone else was fairly pants, Wales can at least take some positives and they finally have a result. France might be in line for the spoon!!!!

Didn't have any opinion on PSA, but never liked Biarritz game and found it permanently overrated, despite some of the most courageous and talented players in France (Harinordoquy, Betsen,...).

It was Lagisquet who determined that the Biarritz game plan consisted of the scrum and Yach....if the ball went any further, it was to be taken back into the pack. This worked well enough for them and they even won the Top 14 in 2005 (?) but, unfortunately, the game mped on and he could not. They continued the same game plan until eventually he "left" but by this time the game plan was engrained and player power continued with it through to present date which influenced and contributed to the poor recrutiment policy over the last number of years. He was brought back to help the juniors but found himself back as "director of rugby" and back BO went rather than forwards......what a relief when France came a calling!!!

I am still waiting for the game plan to change although there are signs that they are trying but, unfortunately, now they do not have the players other than Ngwenya and Balshaw to implement anything else!!

Slow start by both teams, game could have gone each way. Good win by Wales. France might need to recheck their game plan for the next game.

I cannot hide dear lads I do quite feel like buying myself a double-barreled shotgun and going Kurt Cobain at this very exact moment.

Thats what club rugby is for mate! When your internatonal side depresses you you just stick your head n the sand and pretend your club team s the only thing that exists! Then you carefully poke your head above for your net international game....and quickly vanish again if you're still shite :p. Thats what got me through Englands dark years - supporting Wasps!

love it !

of course ya do, it's anti-french sarcasm !!

.......ooooooohhhh caaaaaaaaareful now Canadian boy, there's a limit to even humor about certain things !....AND DON'T TELL ME YOU'RE SERIOUS WITH THAT !!!!!!!!!! :diablo:

hahaha...well, I'm not sure if I'm a Toulon or Toulouse or Clermont guy right now, but I do have a penchant for Clermont...I see what you mean though.
And thx, again, for trying to cheer me up lol !

But I mean, with England there's just about some consistency. Some years they're very good, you know what to expect, other years they're just not as competitive, again you know what to expect.
But imagine how great it felt to be a French Rugby fan in November (Samoa wasn't AS satisfying, but still, the 4th straight win), knowing what your team can do, and then.......th...this ?

As soon as the idea that Wales was definitively going to win installed in my head, I just felt like...this sort of lightness...like a joke, like I'm having a laugh all of a sudden almost. The loss in Italy was VERY tough to swallow, but this is like..."oh, right, yeh ok wtvr...next we can just lose to Namibia, yeh sure, why not...just don't forget the popcorn !"

Will we ever win a RWC ? Well yeh, sooner or later...but boy in our case, everything will have to be juuuuuuust perfect for it to happen.

As a counter example of that: England was far from excellent around 2007. They were horribly mediocre during the pools, I remember notably that terrible result against SA...but then, they managed a nice narrow victory, no tries, just....Wilko. Then got France, again narrowly but surely...I remember France some silly stupid fkn mistakes as usual...and then, oh, well, what do you know ?! RWC FREAKING FINALS AGAIN.
Of course it's not given to just any side, but I mean surely and steadily, a side that never should have been there (Finals) managed to exploit their resources to the max, play simple rugby, pragmatic, realistic...
e.g.: they were just 9th in total tries scored, but first in Drop Goals with 5 by guess who, and were 4th in penalties).

Us ? We're going to beat the best side of the universe straight out of Jupiter and Saturn in the most unlikely upset in sports history, and then lose badly against a much worse team...it's a rollercoaster emotionally, and so many what-if's because YOU KNOW your team could be doing way, way better....

Great defensive display from Wales

i thought Biggar controlled well today

Didn't catch the match, but spoken to a few about it.
Sounds like our back five forwards put on a great tackling display. Good old Andrew Coombs, what a legend!

You know it's just occurred to me...but we haven't scored a try on Wales in the last 3 confrontations....dating back to the 2011 6N victory.

Damn, you are right. This is also the biggest winning margin since then.

Big performances from Gethin, Ian Evans and Ryan Jones in the pack. Tipuric tackled like a demon as did Coombs.

Biggar was not bad, made a few little silly errors but his vision ultimately led to Wales winning the game.

Damn, you are right yourself !! It's just worse and worse, it'll just continue to grow exponentially...until.....until you return the favor and beat us 51-0 ?...
 just kidding, I'm just a little bitter prick :p

Better to be a little bitter prick than have one.

I missed the match, but all I have heard was Machenaud and Michalak were dire, surely it must be more than that? This really is an interesting Six Nations.
Bring back Traille, Rougerie, and the other old boys!

What would we have given for a Jones, Lydiate, or Charteris in the first half against Ireland. A backrow of Lydiate/Jones, Tipuric, and Faletau gives me a nice warm feeling.

Your sense of logic is quite formidable. I will respect you greatly from now on.

You missed it ? ahh watch it man, don't read other ppl's comments, you have to see just how pathetic France was. Like I said earlier, Michalak during the post-match interview said "we sucked" and just left the interviewer, it looked like he was about to crack a tear. And it's still a Welsh victory in Paris, so just for that check it out...but you'll see, it's nothing glorious man ! ;) Wales looked baaaad too, except for that one try. Soooo many mistakes...

Both teams played conservative: tremendous intensity and concentration on defense, so it was an absolute snore-fest the whole thing, until Wales scored a try and that's when welsh ppl went "yayyy...streak's over........*yawn*" and french fans went "wowwwwwww, favorites for the tournament huh ?!  "

I am waiting to watch it before I make a full assessment.
Not going to get caught up in the 'we won' hubris, because it seemed like two poor sides playing each other. Regardless, a win in Paris, first since 2005 and all.

^ oh yeh yeh, if I were Welsh I'd say exactly that: we finally broke through all that negativity and can breathe now we've ended the streak...a win in Paris don't look too bad on the CV...first since 2005...

but then...not a great achievement considering France's level, and not a great sign for future 6N matches and beyond given Wales' level during the match...intensity was there, some okay plays, but generally so uneven and such a lack of control for both sides...

So what you are saying is that Wales didn't really win it ... just France level was so poor ...

Therefore no one really performed for Wales and I take back my earlier post about good performances <_< ... :(

Oh I agree, it's not like everything is back on track. In fact, this will give Howley and others some unneeded breathing space. But to shut Healey up for a week, well...
Regardless, win the gritty ones, that is something we rarely do. Some real guts from individuals. Phillips, love him or hate him, is a ****ly bugger and really gets into the opposition.

So, what do we think will be the XV in two weeks?
Halfpenny, Cuthbert, Davies, Roberts, North, Biggar, Phillips; Jenkins, Hibbard, Jones, Evans, JonesAW, JonesR, Tipuric, Faletau?

I'd have James for Jenkins, Mitchell for Jones (rotation), Coombs replaceing Reed and Warburton over Shingler.

^ yes ! It's true, Phillips was fine...definitely had some good moments there...

Cymro:
nope, that's not what I said. You've just read into what I said in the most cliché possible way lol.

France was absolutely poor. In full honesty, I'm not really able to rate the welsh performance. They surely have done the minimum : they beat France ! It is really a very dark day for the french national team. Nothing to take out of that game, just poor and poor , no spark, no players out of the lot. Even worse, we do not have anybody to blame, we just lost a poor game of rugby. Im thinking about becoming a supporter of football....
