EOYT: Ireland v South Africa, 11/10/2012

Meh, big backs be over rated. Wales showed today that you can be massively ineffectual with large backs while the nippier Argentines gave them a run around. Pick your best players and tailor your game plan to fit.

Our problem on the weekend was the lack of SOB and Ferris. Starting Henderson could have somewhat offset this. As is, we could have easily won if Heaslip had stayed on the pitch.

For me our best back line sees McFadden and Cave in the centres and Zebo, Bowe and Earls in the back three. While none of them are particularly big lads, they're all good players. No problem with stepping around teams or playing out wide. Bosh rugby isn't the only way to do things and in my mind is far less ineffective than brains in the back line. Hence our Brian still being a better centre than Tualagi, Roberts, and numerous other bosh merchants.

I didn't see Wales game but judging by reports, Wales just having a bad day looks to be the main reason for the result. There bash play has payed off big time wit them, look at 6 nations this year WC last year, Davies try this year, steam rolled two/three of our players and over the line. North the same.
SOB and Ferris are huge loss, as the guys were saying earlier, missing O'brian and Ferris means we don't have huge back row ball carriers that can come off a ruck, pull in players and off load cleanly in a tackle to the fast moving backs, that's what we do well when we have them and when our backs click. But a bit more bulk in our centers and add in our fast pace wingers and that is a recipe for success.Look at NZ, I think NZ s back three, Dagg and Savea in particular, scored something like 80% of their Rugby championship trys

Cory Jane scored the most with 5. Savea and Dagg both got 3. The outside backs scored 61.1% of the tries.

Game was pretty dull...
Just hope Lambie gets another chance as Steyn had 38 chances

Pitty we never saw Vermaak and especially Brits, what are they there for then
CJ is old, period, Heinke offered way more but would still like to see Guthro with added experience getting a start.

Like I read on another forum about Heyneke : We need a visionary, not a historian - and that was very applicable to the JdJ,JT and Scarecrow debate

Guthro is injured though otherwise he would have been included. And unluckily Beast has had another spell of heart palpitations. I think we all knew CJ was going to struggle at scrumtime, he has struggled at the scrum for many teams for a while now. I think if our staff didn't know Van der Merwe was the better scrummiger THEY DO NOW THANKFULLY.

Bryan Habana scored 7 tires which is 7/12 for SA o_O

Kirchner 2
Louw 1
Coetzee 1
F Steyn 1

Lol!

He's our second highest try scorer this year... Damn!

Yeah, JP Petersen also has 2 for season both against England so the fact that him, Habs and Kirchner are tops is a good indicayor IMO; it's good if your back 3 are scoring tries.

Against England we have JP on 2 tries
Hougaard with 1
Bismarck with 1
M Steyn with 1
Alberts with 1 and
JdV with 1

and in November Pienaar with 1

Heneke quotes from this week:

"I definitely want to give Juan a chance, the reason I left him out last week was just because I wanted to keep changes to a minimum from the perspective of what we needed on defence," said Meyer."I haven't made up my mind completely about this yet, and I still need to talk to a few people, but I would like to institute a rotation policy in the midfield. I thought Jaco Taute played his best test so far against Ireland, so it is a case of whether we play Jaco and Juan together in the midfield, or whether we pair up Juan with Jean"

""I am thinking of giving Jean a rest this week as he has been struggling a bit with that hamstring injury that has been bothering him recently,"

"
"I still believe fullback is Jaco's best position, and would love to play him there now, but I don't want to make too many changes for the Scotland game. I think we should be looking to build momentum, and we did not play well last time out against Ireland. I have a lot of respect for Scotland."

on Lambie "
He didn't have much opportunity to stamp his authority on the game in the first half but he showed some nice touches in the second and Pat also knows he is capable of better so I would like to back him and give him a chance to gain confidence going forward by building on his performance,"

Yeah, I read that too...

Basically saying that if JDV's hamstring is okay then he'll play JDJ at 13 and Taute at 15. If JDV hamstring isn't fine, then JDJ at 12, Taute at 13 and our second top try scorer for the year at 15...

TBH I want to see both JdV and Kirchner out in the long run so either would be a slight improvement. Spies out, M Steynout... JdJ coming in and HM saying that he want Taute at 15 in the long run... music to my ears although we'll probably have to wait for next year to see how a full strength Bok team performs.

Hope Lambie gets some more and better ball this time round. Between Lambie, Jatjies and Goosen we have good depth at 10 but all three need some growth. I don't really beleive one is all that much better than the other ATM.

Apparently Guthro Steenkamp is also likely to be available so things are looking up.

M Steyn to be replaced on the bench by Jantjies and CJ to be replaced by Steenkamp and drop out altogether. Also would llike to see Vermaak get a chance with Hougie on the bench and Mvovo coming in at 11.

A little off topic but with Richardt Strauss now playing for Ireland and CJ Stander and Quinn Roux being 'project players' coupled with seeing that the Nethrlands have climbed to 39th on the IRB rankings I just wondered how it is that in this day and age we aren't seeing the Netherlands looking at SA for players. I think a lot of young boertjies would jump at the chance to move to a country with a better standard of living but still retain much of the culture and language although we're all able to speak English (not always all that well..).

The only answer I can see is that the Netherlands just couldn't give a toss about rugby? If you see someone like Tim Visser go to Scotland that indicates this is the case as well. France, England, Italy and now Ireland all with SA players but none in Holland? I just wondered.

CJ only signed for 2 years, so we will have to see what happens when the 2 years are done and whether or not he'll stay on.

As for the Dutch thing... Good Question, I know myself and my brothers and my father are all right now eligible for dutch passports.

It's a difficult question, national loyalties, emmigration etc but interesting. With the situation in SA a lot of families of European and predominantly Dutch decent are in a tough situations and are looking at emmigration seriously. The most popular destinations being Aus, England, NZ, Canada, USA and only after these, Holland. I suppose having been colonized by England and English being the operational language in SA means the commonwealth in general is a pretty easy place to find ones feet in. The Dutch connection is a pretty obvious one as well. Most Afrikaners also have French, German and some Irish and Scottish ancestry but the language and culture links are far strongest with those other nations.

Already you see someone like DTH van der Merwe starring for Canada not to mention the likes of the Fourie's, Botha's, Strauss', De Jagers, De Villier's, Roux's etc having played for 6 nations sides.

The blood on Richardt Strauss' lips in the first few minutes on the weekend just illustrates how touchie a subject national loyalties is; I won't be told one the bokke didn't have at him in close quarters.

That is a good question. I don't think there is a professional league in the Netherlands, which would explain why professional players don't make the trip - especially if they could lose their current positions in the clubs. With that being said - if they moved to Europe to play in France for example and are uncapped by SA, and are eligable to play for the Netherlands, I don't see why they wouldn't explore that possibility (if overseas clubs would be happy to accomidate).

I'm sure if the Netherlands ever gave a toss about rugby as a whole nation (sure there are plenty of passionate individuals) and wanted to recruit some South Africans, they'd be in luck. Although presumably (and forgive me if I'm totally wrong), Namibia could also recruit an awful lot of South African's through vague heritage? I don't know if the quality of life would be any better, but surely there would be lots of South Africans eligable to play and get a spot in the Rugby World Cup (helped more by the Namibian team in the Vdacom Cup?)
