England v New Zealand - 2 November 2024

I read Marler has been slagging off the Haka and deleted his Twitter account. I always feel slagging off the Haka just before playing NZ is never the smartest move so I approve of his comments even if I found them slightly insensitive.

Being denied it's because of that. Said he left on Monday (And they managed to keep that a secret until today? That's actually quite impressive).

I guess they're not going to come out and admit it if it did play a role in his/their decision for him to leave. Better to keep it vague. Either way he's a bit of a tool isn't he. Don't know why they still put up with him.

Because he's a good prop and it's a free ******* country last time I checked

Didn't he say the Haka is tedious IF it's not met with a challenge?
Yeah he posted a clip of the haka response in the rugby league game the other day and said it should be binned if you're not allowed to respond

Personally I don't think that warrants death threats, but what do I know

Meh, the Haka is a weirdly sensitive issue and World Rugby's golden goose. I love when a crowd drowns it out. Have always felt that players give it too much thought.

Any suggestion of binning it from an opposition player is pretty ill advised and Marler knows that it'd get a public reaction. Agree that it's overly protected though.

Yeah, but he's a liability. If you're a professional athlete most coaches dont tend to persist with players like that. Mentality and attitude is more important than how good of a player you are. I'd re try we have 15 players of average ability with the best mentality in the world compared to 15 world class players who all folded it in as soon as the going got tough or were just general tools.

How is he a liability? He voiced an opinion on the Haka, it's not like he's saying we should return to slavery or ban abortion. FFS, aren't you the one who always bangs on about how great freedom of speech is in America.

He's a liability as you don't know from one second to the next whether he's even go to be there (as shown today) whether that's because he can't be arsed, has said something stupid or coz he's had a meltdown.

I'm not saying he shouldn't be allowed to say what he did.

Well obviously not, I don't think anyone was saying he's broken the law just probably a bit of a dickish thing to say about another counties culture.
A culture that until 30 years ago no one really bothered with. You would have a bit of a farcy dance at the start of a game involving NZ if they were playing away, now it's at the start of every NZ game including when the Lions are playing mud week teams and you are absolutely not allowed at all to disrespect, challenge or take the ****.

Glad someone said it.

Are you saying Māoris have only been doing the Haka for 30 years?

X users (I'm not one) correct me if I'm wrong but the screen shots I've seen suggested he said it should be binned in one post and then followed up in a separate post about being tedious if unchallenged.

I can see why the first would provoke some and many, including me, would agree with the second.

@Leonormous Boozer sums up my view perfectly and for those in cyberspace (not here) saying that this will motivate the ABs, this isn't the 1980s where players psyched themselves up by head butting walls.

Given his history you always worry for Marler a bit. I've also seen him referred to as 'injured', so one way or another I hope he's OK.

The only thing I disagree with is that he tried to say it was a bit of bantz. Talk your **** King.

And yeah, the original haka was a 1000x more offensive than talking **** on the original one that is just a way to get some YouTube vids.
