England v France,23/02/13

Doesn't Wood do a lot of the lineout work at Saints (when Day's not about)?
There's also Palmer and Croft, though I can't see either being around the England squad for a while (due to injury and/or dropping down the pecking order).

My guess is that one of Kitchener and Kruis will start to be included in the England set-up in the summer/autumn, both are fine line-out locks who take responsibility for calling it from time to time - right now, Robson seems to be the next man after Parling, but he's never realistically challenging.

I'm surprised nobody has picked up on the name before. The accusations of being a glory hunter seem pretty well founded, what on earth is a Janner doing with an Exeter crest beside his name? Where's the Albion / Devonport badge?

It`s complicated.
Born in Plymouth, Mother and Father from North Cornwall and grew up in St Thomas, Exeter spitting distance from the County Ground and now live in Tavistock....happy?
BTW, plenty of Janners on the train travelling from Plymouth and all points west to Sandy Park in my experience...go figure!

Can`t argue with that, ever played at Redroot though?.....now that is a proper sh*thole!

Such a sh*thole it was chosen to host the All Blacks in 93 and England A games in the late 90s - traditionally considered the third biggest ground in English rugby.

More confused, as you have no Plymothian connections, wouldn't Large Cousin Jack be more appropriate?

With the England lineouts, Parling and Youngs should have a good enough understanding from Tigers, and Parling will know about Youngs's dyslexia which means certain calls need to be kept simple. Hartley, as far as I know, doesn't suffer from dyslexia so hopefully communication isn't a problem for any of the members involved. It is most likely to be down to 1 of 2 reasons, an off day or lack of practice/drills. Other areas of gameplay may have taken priority which I somewhat doubt, as I imagine Lancaster has everything scheduled meticulously.

When fully fit, I would like to see Croft back in at 6, maybe Croft, Robshaw & Wood/Morgan? With that, we would have 4 lineout targets, Parling, Launchbury, Croft & Wood

Not sure this is too interesting for others on here RRFC, but I`ll indulge you anyway.
Janner is not just a ***le used to describe those from Plymouth, it extends into Cornwall as well, although perhaps not as far west as Redruth it seems.

"J is fer Janner - that's our cousin Jack -You give 'ee some cheek and he'll give'ee some back!"

England layers won't be using club lineout calls.
Ah yeah, you're right, but I'd have thought the understanding between Youngs and Parling should be there. I'm quite happy for Hartley to play, if he brings more to the team than Youngs. I've been a big fan of Hartleys since I first saw him for Saints, I like his aggression and leadership, which I hope Youngs will bring into his own game over time

Just watched the game last night without knowing the score, having been in Hungary for a couple of days. Delighted with the win as the first half had me very, very worried.

A few random things struck me/were reinforced:

1) Tom Youngs is an excellent player who seems to be quite central to our gainline success and quick ball generation. I've seen very few front row forwards with a leg drive as good as his. I think he could be very hard to dislodge from a starting berth if he keeps on improving.
2) Admttedly this worked in our favour at times yesterday, but I feel referees and touch-judges need to start monitoring lineouts to the front better; just because the ball is taken earlier in flight doesn't mean its not a massively skewed throw :p. Its virtually impossible to compete in these scenarios.
3) Whilst I don't necessarily think Ashton should be dropped quite yet, its becoming increasingly indefensible to pick him with his tackling so amateur, and when we're seemingly not picking guys like Chritian Wade for even the wider EPS, because of an alleged defensive weakness.
4) Lawes: told you so :p.
5) Hugely lucky try? Yep, without doubt. But we got shafted by an equally freak series of events in that autumn game against South Africa, so I make no apologies for it :d
6) I was impressed with Goode in the autumn, but recently the more I watch him the more I think he's a holding template of a player. I wish he'd stop with the outrageous dancing, and actually try and make some metres running the ball back.

He added: "This [criticism] is new for me. I don't know where all this defence stuff has come from."

In fairness, I find it refreshing and a sign of our new regime of humbleness that squad members aren't googling themselves all the time, because he's clearly not!

haha, he's tripping over his feat to prove himself when he says "I want to tackle, I want to hurt people..." He should have gone for something more believable.
I don't actually think he's as bad a defender as maybe some recent performances have suggested. He doesn't often completely shy away from making hits and tackles. This said, pound for pound he's not doing enough.Don't want to harp on about it, but if Christian Wade had 14st 6lb he'd be the best defender in the premiership :p. Oh, and Cuthbert would be the worst...

Christ what am I even talking about here...

That Wade is a demon and that Cutbert is a Welsh Banahan.

Not too far off;)

I think at least in that "attempt" on Fofana, he thought someone else was going to complete the tackle so all he had to do was put an arm up.
That's not an excuse though, you should go into every tackle attempting to complete it on your own, unless you are the second man in.
He's guilty of having that same complacency for a while now...

I really hope Brown gets moved to 15 and a new left wing is brought in, that way we can see 2 wingers, and hopefully see what Ashton can do when he has a running FB to trail into the line.

Also really don't like Cuthbert, he always looks as though he's about to cry.

Ashton used to get in in the past for his lines and the number of tries he scored. He doesn't score so many any more. He's currently on 6 from 14 for the Sarries, and has only 1 try in the last 8 6N matches. Most of these tries have come from when his team are destroying the other, rather than in the tight games where wingers actually need to score tries. It's not a recent problem - his try scoring slowed down well over a year ago. I hate to say it, but it feels as if union has dulled his attacking instincts with time. (I just hope the same doesn't happen with Eastmond.) Ashton would not be being talked about as an England player if he didn't have the caps he has.

Meanwhile, May is currently on 6 tries in the last 5 games, Varndell 14 from 22 and Wade 12 from 20. Players such as Sam Smith and Adam Thompstone have better try scoring stats than Ashton. Monye and Biggs are on similar records to Ashton, but offer a lot more elsewhere. If the England squad was being picked now, Ashton would be far off imo.
