England squad for SA tour

Ah yeah, suppose.
I dread to think what the SA front row would do to him, though. And he'd end up getting red carded by the end of the first half for punching someone.
Doran-Jones would be a much better option, and could cover 3 from the pitch as well, with Marler on the bench.

If Rowntree reckons Marler's fixed his scrummaging problems, and he's been going a lot better recently, I've no real issues with him being out there.

I've no issue with him touring, I would have an issue with him starting vs the Springboks on his first cap, though.
There's the BaaBaas game before then, anyway, and I expect him to start that, so we can gauge what he's like at international level now.

Wasn't Corbs' first cap straight in against Castro? Nothing wrong with throwing them straight in if they're good enough. In Rowntree I trust.

Guardian reckon George Ford is touring nowhere but his local gym this summer, they're purposely intent on conditioning him. Very clever if true imo.

Ah, but Corbs would have gone up against Castro before.
Interesting on Ford - makes sense, though. If the Churchill cup were on he'd probably be involved with that, but there's only the 2 midweeks and one of the EPS flyhalves is likely to feature in them to keep them game ready, so probably best to give him a full offseason/preseason ready for a full season of senior rugby.

Where is it being said that Corbs is out? And how is Mullan doing these days? With Corbs and Wood out, maybe he's a shout?

Also, if Lancaster is naming his squad next week, does that mean we've done away with the EPS now? Or is the named squad going to be the EPS + a few alterations?

Is Rowntree the scrum coach? wasn't he also the B&I Lions scrum coach vs the Boks in 09? I remember that first test where Beast manhandled the tighthead prop in the scrums...

LOL, I remember that. To be fair to Phickery, the Beast was scrumming in on him a tad. And we had our work cut out for us once Shaw started packing down at lock with Jenkins and Jones at prop.

Lawes is out now.......

Think Marler and Armitage should be on the tour, would be a good test for them even if they only play the mid week games.

Just a tad ;)

Vickery got munched in the first test, but then did well in the third. He was very much in the twilight of his career though, probably shouldn't have toured let alone started the tests.
Rowntree is considered one of the best scrum coaches around, I believe.

There was politics involved in Vickery starting the tests - Murray was widely considered the premier tighthead at the time, but upset the bean counters by playing in the Challenge cup final instead of going to a sponsors meet and greet thing. This upset the blazers and he was "punished" by being relegated to the midweek side.

That was when he infamously broke his ankle and never was a shadow of his former self again.

not starting Adam Jones was obviously a big error, he changed the game in the second half of the first match

but the other tighthead props who were on the tour were Euan Murray and John Hayes (an injury replacement for Murray),

so I would say Vickery was probably better than Hayes, so he deserved to be on the tour as one of the top three tightheads

Yes, in a pre-test mid-week game. He was well and truly stuck into the dirt-trackers.

Wasnt just Vickery, the whole Lions pack failed to front up in the first test and were utterly dominated by the boks for the first 60 minutes when Bakkies went off. Seem to remember a 50 yard driving maul by the boks at one point and probably thereal reason Shaw came in.

Is the general opinion on Phil Dowson that he's had his chance? I only mention it because Lancaster seems to really rate him...

On another note, Daly is in my opinion potentially the best young center in the Prem. give it a couple of years and he'll be in contention but I think he's too young and/or broken to go now.

Dowson wouldn't be in my squad. Think we're covered at 6 for a while with Robshaw, Croft and Haskell. Any extra gametime should be given to youngsters.

no point in Dowson really - he's always been a great Premiership player who should have played more for England before 2012... but he's not there now.

Wait to see on injuries from the next few weeks, but I think we should be able to send a strong squad down. Even with no Croft and Wood, a returning Haskell covers for them more than enough IMO.

Dowson should've been in the England squad several years ago.
Now? Meh. He wouldn't make my 22, or even squad if Haskell's available.

What these fine gentlemen said on Dowson, save that I'm pessimistically expecting him to go to SA again and steal a tour's worth of development from the likes of Gibson/Fearns/Wallace etc.etc. He's not a bad player, but brings no wealth of international experience, no great impact today, no hope of a long future with the side.
