England 6N 2016 - General Chit Chat

If you feel Watson should replace Brown at FB, then who should replace Watson at Wing?

I think Yarde has the most potential out of the contenders for wing myself, I would really like to see him given another chance in Australia. My preference for replacing Brown at FB would be Nowell, although I'm not sure he needs replacing from our full strength team right now. Am I alone in thinking Brown did a decent job this 6N? Maybe not the great tournament he had a couple of years ago but he played well.

It's Watson, May and AN Other for me. As those 2 are sprinters it's someone with a bit more power. That probably should be Roko, but looking longer term I wouldn't mind a look at Lewington.

That's quite the slander.

It's what I've seen.

Now, in fairness, I don't know what Watson's defensive positioning is like at full-back. The one time he was there for England I wasn't terribly impressed but, like, one time. But Brown is generally in the right place.

Vision in attack? I've seen Brown do some quite nice things actually and also seen Watson casually chuck it to an opponent a couple of times as well. I think Brown's reputation for hogging the ball constantly is a tad overdone (only a tad though). I'd probably rate them as about equal... which given my worries about Watson's positioning means that yes, I'll take Brown overall.

Ultimately, it seems people don't share my concerns. Hopefully that's because he's grown and matured and got more sensible rather than people overreacting to Brown's bad form though. Bath fans - how happy are you with Watson's full-back basics?

So all these wingers are as good as Watson at defending, tackling, passing, game vision as well as attacking?

That's not the question I answered, because it's not the one being asked.

We should be looking to replace Brown, he's old and based on the 6N his weaknesses are not compatible with the way Jones is looking to play.

Watson is one of, if not the leading candidate.

Very.

Will Yarde be back by the summer?
I don't think I heard anything about the injury he got in the game against us, looked nasty though.

I thought Brown was decent as well. I certainly wouldn't be looking to drop him this summer. Definitely not adverse to seeing someone else get some time at 15, but Brown would be my first choice.

Can't decide if this is an example of Brown's lack of rugby IQ of not running to support get closer to give Tuilagi an option of an offload or lack Brown's lack of pace, not being able to keep up with Tuilagi, which would almost certainly of meant an England try at a crucial point in the 2nd test v NZ in 2014. Thoughts?

If Watson and Nowell are both being kept in the back three, then I'd much rather that Nowell is the one that moves to fullback. He's sturdier and his lack of pace would be less of a liability at full back.

I reckon a combination of lack of pace and the presence of Jane. I think that when he knows he won't keep up with Tuilagi for an offload (and even if he were able to, Jane has his inside anyway), he comes in-field to present Tuilagi with the option to kick in-field, but Jane mirrors Brown to stop it.

Anyone but Ashton.

Rokoduguni, Wade, May, Yarde etc, etc.

Anyone more "in-the-know" care to elaborate on why Rokoduguni hasn't exploded on the international stage yet? I just can't understand it. Every time I've seen him he has shown class that not many backs in the northern hemisphere show, and pulled off attacking moves hardly any British backs would dare to attempt. Give me someone of his ability over a dull Nowell-type any day.

Not many wingers can step like this:

He got injured pretty much immediately after his 1 cap and experienced a drop of form on recovery.

But yeah it's pretty frustrating as a Bath fan watching him play for us instead of England. He just does everything right everything I watch him. I'd take Roko on the wing over Watson to be honest.

I think a simple lack of pace meant that he couldn't give Manu any options.

Brown's scored 9 tries in 7 games over 48 caps, which isn't stellar. Only 1 of those has been against a SH "big 3 " team while 5 have been against the the might of Italy, Fiji and Samoa. The others have been in the 6N. You can read into that what you want but it doesn't scream top level game breaker.

Of course he's done much good, particularly under the high ball and I like his attitude. But he's never been an X factor player, he's now 30 and isn't going to get better. We need to be looking at other options - Watson's the obvious choice and I can't see why he wouldn't be a success.

Isn't he back on blistering form though? That's what I heard.

Just watched his match-winning try against Gloucester. To sidestep like that and then have the power to force yourself over the line from that far out is pretty incredible, especially after being on the pitch the whole game. I can imagine a replacement doing that off the bench because they are fresh, but to still have the energy to pull off something like that is pretty special. So yeah, Eddie Jones needs to get with the program.

I'm not sure when he is back but I would hope it is in time to play this summer.

As for the Brown clip, that break came at the end of a very intense first half of rugby. He was just tired, it doesn't reflect his pace (although he isn't the quickest I will grant you).
