Digby Ioane may miss rest of rwc

Luckily I haven't read it then :p

How integral is Diggers to the Wallabies defensive system? Who will defend the 10 channel now? Because If It's one area of the pitch Ireland's backrow can attack it's the 10 channel.

I will be interesting to see what they do. James O'Connor will come into the starting lineup in place of Ioane, and there is also the possibility they may bring in Drew Mitchell (with AAC moving to centre, and Faingaa to the bench). If AAC starts on the wing I think they may use him to defend the 10 channel, as he provides the same physical presence on defence that Ioane provided. If they start Mitchell and O'Connor on the wings I think they would use O'Connor defending at 10 on defence - he's got experience defending there, and is a solid defender. However he does lack a bit of size, so some of Ireland forwards (I'm thinking SOB and Heaslip in particular) could make some good yards in that channel before being brought down. I can't see them use Cooper to defend at 10 ever again - not only is he a complete liability, but he is a big asset on the counter attack coming in from the back.

Definitely weakens the Wallabies, excellent players they have to fill the gap though. Ireland may select a backrow of Ferris, O'Brien and Heaslip. I'd wager there is not a better ball carrying backrow in the competition. Pocock will have a field day however. Intriguing match.

Whilst only a winger, Digby's loss will nevertheless be a terrible loss for the wallabies due to his defensive presence at 10. Also, as was rightly pointed out in the Herald today, he is pretty devastating in this part of the field as a counter attacker on turnovers too.
That said, Drew Mitchell was one of the form wingers of the game as a whole before his sickening ankle injury earlier this year, so we'll have good cover for attack. It's now simply a question of how we'll substitute Digby's ferocious defence…

Why would you be happy to see a great rugby player missing a RWC, even if you are NZ? Also if you do want NZ to finally not choke at a world cup, wouldnt you want them to do it against the best and become the best? Also I think if you did the stats, there are 4.2million NZ and 21.5million Aussies, i think atleast 25% of Aussies care about rugby, not every kiwi cares about rugby so its probably the same % of country numbers in each country that love rugby.

I cut my 2 year working Visa in UK short to fly all the way to NZ to see the RWC, so dont say Aussies dont give a sh*t about rugby, at least we can win RWC's and not choke every 4 years.

That's assuming the best* make it - who ever that may be.

Also, I'm not reading anywhere where it was said that Aussies don't give a crap about rugby.

Digby's a Samoan First and Aussie Second (with a Kiwi Passport) he'll be good by the 4th Week.

Breathe in....Breathe out.

*(it's the All Blacks)(and Samoa)

And you know this how? He was born in Wellington and moved to Australia at five years old. I'm not sure he's ever been to Samoa, but he has chosen Australia as his country to represent, so you'd probably presume it was Australia 1st, New Zealand 2nd and Samoa 3rd. Unless I'm missing something?

Bingo. It's where you've been brought up that really defines you. I was born in Sweden, but have very little memory of the place and if I were asked what my nationality was I'd say Australian and only qualify it with info on Sweden if pressed (particularly given half is Irish with something else lol).

Digby would have had a shot at making the ABs I'm sure, and definitely could have represented Samoa if he wanted to. On that basis he must have some affection for this place - especially as it now looks like he's turning down another lucrative Japan contract just to play for the Wallabies for a couple more years.

Relax....Breathe in Breathe out.

Firstly - his name is IOANE. That's SAMOAN for John. Also, the connection to the motherland/fatherland is strong for most Samoans (maybe not for him - i just assumed)
Secondly - i've seen his passport - it's a Kiwi passport.
Thirdly - Why so serious?

Good on him for representing Australia. Just because you choose a country to represent initially doesn't mean to say you don't want to represent another country. I'm also quite chuffed that Manu Tuilagi is representating England.

I'm in no way annoyed or worked up, I just think it's arrogance to say he's a Samoan before he's Australian.

My last name and first name are English. My parents are English. I don't consider myself English. I know he has a New Zealand Passport. He was born in Wellington and moved when he was five years old, therefore would need a New Zealand passport. What makes you think I'm extremely serious, just pointing out that your statement was presumptuous. My point about him wanting to play for Australia over Samoa is just simply saying that he clearly considers himself an Australian if he chose to play for Australia.

You've taken my initial point out of context.

If you read the line in full not just what was in bold - it was meant to indicate how TOUGH he is.

Not his roots, heritage or choice of team.

Also, Digby came over this time on his Aussie Passport. I stand corrected.

Digby played his junior rubgy in Australia. Went to school in Australia. Was coached by Australian coaches, played for Australian rep teams and started his professinal career in Australia.

If he ended up playing for any other country, it would be an injustice to the Wallabies because he has been brought up in the ARU system.

if he wanted to player for another team he would, but he doesn't so who cares? He may not be the same player if his rugby development took place in another country

thanks for this post btw, it allowed me to pull Digby out of my fantasy lineup in time
