Digby Ioane may miss rest of rwc

Does anyone know what type of fracture it is?...I dont think its an open one, linear, spiral, anyone know?...

A bad one but really they havn't specified. Requires sugery so that ain't good, I think the Aussies are hoping he is back in the world cup eventually so all is not lost for good ol Digby.

Weelllllllllll no

Good, so why post anymore in this thread?

but According to official government statistics

wow, official government statistics!

, in 2005–06, the most popular sports in terms of crowd attendance were

Why do you think crowd attendance is such a compelling indicator? Do you follow horse racing? I bet not. Have you ever been to a horse race? I bet so. Crowd attendance, measures CROWD ATTENDANCE. You cannot possibly conclude from those stats that "sport X is more popular than sport Y". You can only conclude that "Sport X is attended by more people for one reason or another".

It is clear you are cherry picking data to support the conclusion: "Australians don't support rugby". Rather than looking at the reality first.

There are 3 or 4 wallaby home games a year. While there is an NRL/AFL/Horse Race meet on every weekend. Of course they are going to have higher attendances.

Yes, we have the super15. But I thought this discussion was about the Wallabies. Anyone will tell you super15 is not that big in Australia. Most average fans only have time for the Wallabies. Same as the socceroo's. (and the super15/A-League are only on cable TV, so they reach a limited audience)

Basically the most accurate way to measure the most popular sports in Australia is through attendance by non-participants.

When we use your logic, we can conclude horse racing is more popular than Tennis, Rugby Union and Swimming combined. When that is not the case. Hell, we can even conclude that horse racing is more popular than NRL, and almost as popular as AFL... I mean, just think about that for a second.

Of course there will be a spike of interest due to the world cup but overall rugby is nothing. Well it is something after aussie rules, horse racing, league, motorsport and cricket. Proof as above.:D

You are drawing crazy conclusions from one piece of data that you picked out solely because it supported your conclusion. If you want to measure popularity there are much better indicators, google searches for one. Rugby news is always in demand. TV ratings can even be used. Of course you take each indicator with a pinch of salt, because there is not one single indicator that can demonstrate which is the "most popular Australian sport".

Argh had a quick scan of your post. I copied and pasted my information so unfortunately it isn't my logic but your govenments including "Basically the most accurate way to measure the most popular sports in Australia is through attendance by non-participants." part. Relax, take it up with your government if you dislike the logic or wording, not me. I googled that sh*t lol. Gettin me all flustered. Nice post set up btw really dissected my post good.:D teach me

Woah chill bro it's just the internet. It was a joke ... with some partial truth to it so :p The guy is a talent, Genia out would greatly effect the Wallabies (Just as DC would in the ABs) and Aussie care about rugby yes.. after league, Aussie rules, football and cricket. Sheez.

Unfortunately you're right... Rugby really barely rates a mention in Aus outside of NSW and Qld, and even here in Syd the Wallabies are only just getting the same level of coverage as the NRL finals and channel 9 is showing most games on delay.
It's f@#$ing tragic if you ask me. I bloody love rugby, but this country doesn't really get into it for some reason.
That said, I think it's more well supported by real sports fans than soccer. Soccer's supporter numbers are bloated by all the well-to-do middle-class Euro-trash wannabes who think that watching soccer makes them cultured. And even then they buy a scarf for Sydney FC and watch maybe one match a season.

But man... if Rugby was the dominant code here it would be so awesome! Just think of the star studded wallabies line-ups that the country could have produced without the AFL and NRL sucking in so much of the talent! Quade cooper would be our 3th choice 10 after Thurston (technically a half-back, but would play 10) and Lockyer; we could slot Uate in for Ione now that his thumb is injured (similar types of players); have a centre pairing of Inglis and AAC. Would probably keep Beale and O'Connor though - both are just incredible freaks of nature that would carve in League.
Haven't mentioned forwards because it's harder to think of the conversions, but plenty of big men who would have made imposing union players if only they'd been brought up on it.

David Taylor for one, that guy is a tank. As for NZ, Benji would be like an incredibly rich man's Cooper, Vatuvei would be a poor man's jonah.. but yep Aus would have a few good players out of the bunch of talent you have in league.

Something doesn't add up....

Better TV coverage. Super15 is only on foxtel so at least half the country will never see a game. Wallabies however get some live coverage and it is starting to show. A lot of people are taking interest in the world cup. As well as any indiscretion James O'Connor gets caught up in.

Same as soccer. A couple of times each year the country goes into "football fever" (whenever they have an important game). There are a lot of part-time fans out there (for rugby and soccer), we just need better TV coverage to win them over.

Bad news for Digby ... personally, I don't get the whole "wishing that a player gets injured stuff, no matter what country they play for ... it's the World cup, and you want to see the best players from each country playing (the best players the selectors have selected, not who you think is the best player)

damn it! Why couldn't it rather happen to john smit or butch james or ruan pienaar?!?!

well i cant remember when last ive seen a good performance from him? and we have enough utility backs. and if he is only going to play scrumhalf then why cudn't prick divvy give mcleod or sarel pretorius a chance to gain a bit of international experience in the tri nations and then pick them instead for the rwc?

Ehm, because the name Knock-on McLeod was thought of for a reason and Sarel Pretorius is awful defensively. I rather have Ross Cronje or Jano Vermaak than McLeod or Pretorius... Yes, Sarel is great on attack, he has proven himself in that area of the game, but when it comes to preventing tries, he just misses too many tackles... Almost Quade-like

well he would have made up for the tackles missed by all the tries that he would have made and scored :p i just think he is a much much more exciting player than pienaar.

Yes, he is much more exciting to watch, but I think both Hougaard (with his quick recycling) and Pienaar (with his ability to stay calm) are better options than Pretorius... I think he is a bit of a suicide-scrumhalf... He can do fantastic things but can cost you the match in the last couple of minutes...

Pienaar was Magners League player of the season, an accolade few would disagree that he rightfully earned.

That is all.

Serious shame. Looked like he was going to be one of the tournaments stars. Thankful he won't be tearing Ireland apart in a week though :)
