Good, so why post anymore in this thread?
but According to official government statistics
wow, official government statistics!
, in 2005–06, the most popular sports in terms of crowd attendance were
Why do you think crowd attendance is such a compelling indicator? Do you follow horse racing? I bet not. Have you ever been to a horse race? I bet so. Crowd attendance, measures CROWD ATTENDANCE. You cannot possibly conclude from those stats that "sport X is more popular than sport Y". You can only conclude that "Sport X is attended by more people for one reason or another".
It is clear you are cherry picking data to support the conclusion: "Australians don't support rugby". Rather than looking at the reality first.
There are 3 or 4 wallaby home games a year. While there is an NRL/AFL/Horse Race meet on every weekend. Of course they are going to have higher attendances.
Yes, we have the super15. But I thought this discussion was about the Wallabies. Anyone will tell you super15 is not that big in Australia. Most average fans only have time for the Wallabies. Same as the socceroo's. (and the super15/A-League are only on cable TV, so they reach a limited audience)
Basically the most accurate way to measure the most popular sports in Australia is through attendance by non-participants.
When we use your logic, we can conclude horse racing is more popular than Tennis, Rugby Union and Swimming combined. When that is not the case. Hell, we can even conclude that horse racing is more popular than NRL, and almost as popular as AFL... I mean, just think about that for a second.
Of course there will be a spike of interest due to the world cup but overall rugby is nothing. Well it is something after aussie rules, horse racing, league, motorsport and cricket. Proof as above.
You are drawing crazy conclusions from one piece of data that you picked out solely because it supported your conclusion. If you want to measure popularity there are much better indicators, google searches for one. Rugby news is always in demand. TV ratings can even be used. Of course you take each indicator with a pinch of salt, because there is not one single indicator that can demonstrate which is the "most popular Australian sport".
