Cricket Thread

Just started watching cricket recently. I have to say I don't fully understand it, but it's a good thing to have on the TV while doing a crossword puzzle or something.

It is, but these series are going to a climax with the final on Sunday. On topic: What an innings by Sri Lanka. Will be a tough cookie for Australia to still win this in 29.1 overs.

That was an amazing over that Ishant Sharma bowled, I haven't seen anything even close to that in my short career as a cricket fan. India seemed to be falling apart after that six and "two of the widest wides ever seen at Edgbaston" (from BBC live comment), but in a matter of seconds Ishant turned to a hero dismissing two batsmen who seemed to be cruising - and both catches were made by the same man, Ashwin, but on different sides of the field. Just amazing to watch it live! And England still had a chance to win it later, but I'm so happy India could hold on.

One sentence sums best this game for me and generally you'll struggle to find a more universal truth in all sports: "People talk about technique but the better players are the ones who respond to the pressure." (MS Dhoni after the match)

Although, as I said earlier, I'm not an experienced cricket spectator and many aspects of the game are probably obscure to me, I consider Dhoni to be the best captain of ANY sports team I've seen. Maybe Richie McCaw comes close.

Great comment :)

It's even better on the radio, whilst sat in the sunshine with a beer (or two (or three)(or four)(or fi...))))you get the picture ;))

Nice to see Australia's 'citizenship' rules have been changed to 'anyone who might make the cricket team better' ;)

You know, it's actually sad. That Australia has dropped so far from grace that they have to implement these rules for their Cricket team. for over a decade they were the ultimate team, had the best batsmen, bowlers, and wicketkeeper. Surely they had to put in place a contingency plan once those guys retire, because they eventually will.

To be where they are now is disgracefull, and antics by Warner doesn't help them at all. I also question the appointment of Mickey Arthur as the National coach. Yes, he did well with the Proteas to an extent, but he had his shortfalls even then, why appoint someone like that? The Aus Cricket Administration are the ones who should get all the blame, not anyone else.

From an outsider it loos like the ACB, whilst the team was all conquering and beating pretty much everyone, didn't want to face the eventuality of "these guys can't go on forever you know" and didn't set up the system to produce the next generation. Theyre doing that now, these guys are not in the same league (not many are) but there's some useful players and like in any sport you cannot write off an Australian sporting team.

I cannot wait for the Ashes, I've spent the last day or so and will spent most of next week watching the 3 recent series win DVDs

Australia whilst at the top of their game some years back failed to blood youngsters which in turn has now come back to bite themselves in the bum. I fear the same could happen to England.

Yeah, I'm also looking at it from an outside perspective. But it's not like they didn't know it was going to happen. When the Waugh brothers retired, they should've heard the warning bells. they were the first 2 to retire from that group of great players.

England has done well with transition, I don't think they will be in such a bad spot as the Aussies. But they are making it difficult for young up-and-comers with the Counties all signing overseas based players like the IPL...

Not that I will complain, our SA boytjies gets nice contracts and our young guys then fills the gap. Like David Wiese, who has now been called up to the Proteas T20 squad for the Sri Lankan tour. A powerfull hitter of the ball and a good medium pace bowler as well.

Tomorrow it begins.

The Ashes are the ultimate, not One Day and definitely not T20. A 5 Match Test Series, as it should be.

Its going to be a great series between the two teams. I expect that our better bowlers, even without taking home conditions into consideration, will prove the key. One bad thing in the lead up is Trent Bridges' decision to not allow the Barmy Army trumpeter to play is trumpet, therefore robbing an iconic part of an England home Test match.

I think the Aussies will lose 41-16....oops, sorry, wrong sport. I mean they'll lose 3-1. Sir Ian Botham though says over the corse of the back-to-back series England will win 10-0. In our dreams.

Lol! Now that the Poms helped the Welsh beat the Aussies in Rugby, it's time for the Saffas to help the Poms beat the Aussies in Cricket. Commonwealth Teamwork! :p

Saffas been doing it for years.......D'oliveira and then Lambie was the start?!

Indeed, looking forward to the series. meanwhile i'm enjoying the 3 nations series. Windies completely lost it their last 2 games. I hope they still can make it to the finals.

178-5 before tea. Same old story for England, the batsmen getting starts and them getting out, someone needs to get their nut daahn and be there at the close or we're looking at a 250 odd score. Siddle though is bowling very well, I rate Siddle, he reminds me of Brett Lee in the sense that he gives his absolute all in every delivery and gets rewarded through that.

Insane scenes today, Australia started solid and I thought that, given that the weather is sunny and hot it would be a good day for batting, then that flurry of wickets and then a decent England leas imminent but what an innings by the lad Agar. He has an average of 30 so he can bat and he really can, got a good technique, has a good eye and looks to be enjoying himself and you can't help but praise him for that.

On the other hand is been fairly naff bowling by our lot, not bowling the same line and length we were an hour ago.
