Had you not watched any of the preceding 2 Tests and the 4 and a half days of the last Test and tuned in right at the end to see the England celebration that came thereafter you'd be forgiven to think that England had won all 3 Tests by wide margins.

No, in actual fact that celebration was one drowning in relief as it meant England had avoided defeat in that 3rd Test to keep the series at 0-0. Not a scoreline that was forseen after the pre-Christmas success that was the India tour.

The fact that England celebrated a 0-0 draw should give massive credit and confidence to the Kiwis who more than matched their more illustrious tourists and in parts of all games totally out-thought and outplayed them.

holy crap...

I mean... This is obviously not Jessie ryder getting his life in order, being out at a bar drinking to the early hours before flying out to the IPL.

But wow

Midnight is not really "the early hours" and he wasn't out alone at the bar, he was with his team-mates from the Wellington Firebirds after they got knocked out of the Ford Trophy in the major semi-final by the Canterbury Wizards.

Being out with his mates doesn't necessarily mean he was drinking alcohol.

ahhhh if he was with his mates how did he get outnumbered and beaten up 4 vs 1 ?

not dissing Jessie, I really hope this doesn't end his carrier & recovers soon. I really want him to get back playing for NZ because he is the most talented batsman we have.

Could be a number of reasons for that, at this time its best not to dwell on them.

Unreal news, sad. Just hope he makes a recovery and we see him on the field again.

I'd bet my life savings on him having been on the booze. Wonder what he did to get the ire of 4 blokes to give him a massive beating, I've seen him do some pretty stupid things in town on the drink.

Managed to watch some IPL yesterday. Very good fun. Doni wasn't able to pull it (not enough overs left). Will try to catch another game today as well.

KP is out of the NZ home series. Still not fit from his knee injury, slight worry with the Ashes coming. On the flip side its a good chance for whoever comes in to replace him. I expect James Taylor will get the nod, I just hope they don't revisit the tried and failed options like Bopara, Morgan etc.

So I guess you're a Chennai Super Kings fan...

I'm supporting the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the new kids on the block, the Sunrisers Hyderabad... This year's IPL has been a bit of a downer... not that exciting as it used to be... and the Delhi Daredevils are shocking...

Just seen full highlights. It's probably one of the most stunning, complete show of hitting I have seen. The shots he played matched with the ease he played them and the distance some of them travelled just plain boggles the mind. Prior to this the most devastating hitting I have seen was Ganguly/Dravid at the World Cup game vs Sri Lanka at Taunton in '99.

Holy Crap that was awesome!! I had to laugh everytime they showed Pune Warriors Coach, Allan Donald's face as he just watches how Gayle smashed his bowlers out of the park. Gayle even damaged the roof with that one massive six!

In other cricket news, Australia has announced their Ashes squad:

Michael Clarke (captain), Brad Haddin (vice-captain), David Warner, Ed Cowan, Chris Rogers, Phil Hughes, Shane Watson, Usman Khawaja, Matthew Wade, James Faulkner, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, James Pattinson, Ryan Harris, Jackson Bird, Nathan Lyon

so I guess the team that would play would look like this:

Shane Watson
Ed Cowan
David Warner
Michael Clarke
Usman Khawaja
Phil Hughes
Brad Haddin
Mitchell Starc
Peter Siddle
Nathan Lyon
James Pattinson

Pretty decent squad, I just think that apart from Siddle and Watson, their Bowlers aren't disciplined enough and can be a bit erratic at times.

It would be interesting to see who will be picked on either team, but I have to think that England will win the Ashes again this time...

Not a big fan of T20 cricket, but that was a particularly spectacular innings by Gayle.

Anyways, onto real cricket :) A couple of surprises in the Aussie Ashes squad. I'm not convinced with the the make-up of the squad they are taking, with 4 specialist openers (with Watson probably best suited to opening too...). I think batting is going to be Australia's major problem in England, as they really only have one world class bastmen in their side (Clarke), with none of the rest of the batsmen even averaging 40 in test cricket!

Chris Rogers is a very good selection in my opinion. He certainly is far from a long-term investment (he is already 35), but he has a ton of experience (233 first class matches!). He is in great domestic form in Australia, and has a lot of experience (and success) in English conditions, with over 9000 runs at an average over almost 55 in country cricket over the years. For me he has to be in the starting XI - I suspect he will be at first-drop with Warner and Cowan opening in the first-test.

Warner is almost certain to open, while I think Cowan deserves to open with him. Cowan doesn't have the best test record to date, but he has the ability to hang around for long periods of time, which is what Australia needs at the top of the order. I wouldn't play Hughes, as he has serious issues against the swinging ball that I don't think he has rectified. Watson will certainly be in the starting XI (if fit), but hasn't really delivered on his talent at test level. His bowling will certainly be an asset (as I feel it is very under-rated) - at least until he breaks down! I'm surprised that Khawaja has been included - he has a lot of talent, but is another who is yet to deliver on his potential. For me I see him competing with Mathew Wade for the last batting spot in the side (given Haddin will be the wk given he is vice-captain).

I actually think the Aussie bowling attack has a lot of potential - the question will be how they will adjust to the Duke ball. The majority of the test bowling attack will be going to England as part of the Australia A tour, which should give them plenty of time to adjust to the ball and conditions. The biggest question is going to be who of the pace bowlers should be left out! For me Peter Siddle would be the first pace bowler pick, as he runs in hard all day, and is the leader of the pace attack. I would pick young James Pattinson too, as I think he could really get the ball to swing around. The 3rd spot would be a toss-up between Faulkner, Bird, Harris, and Starc for me. Faulkner looks like he could get a bit of swing and would certainly strengthen the batting order, Starc is young and very quick (though I feel relies too much raw pace at times), Harris is back from injury and bowling as well as ever, while Bird's height and accuracy could make him a real threat on pitches that are offering a bit for the bowlers. As the sole spinner Nathan Lyon should start every match, though I'm not a big fan of his.

If I was the selector I would go with the following lineup:

Warner
Cowan
Rogers
Clarke
Watson
Wade (just ahead of Khawaja)
Haddin
Siddle
Pattinson
Harris (though would be happy with Bird/Faulkner/Starc... in that order)
Lyon
