[COVID-19] General Discussion

So McConnell has been forced to admit he made a "mistake" when he claimed Obama left behind no guide on dealing with a pandemic. God I hope someone pushes this point and shows he did not make a mistake, he willfully lied. If for some weird reason it was actually a mistake, then it must be down that makes him grossly incompetent to not even check.

The media have to really clap down on the lies of this administration and holding McConnell's get to the fire may be a good way to get to trump.

It's the closest you're gonna get to McConnell admitting he lied.

So it looks like a massive backtrack on the UK / France no quarantine agreement.

This is more sensible. But I really do think our leaders can organise a p*ss up in a brewery, because the only explanation for the decisions / messaging is that they've been taken after a good lunch. In a drought of capable leaders, NZ are very lucky to have a sane one.

And the Government are ending funding for the homeless. Such a compassionate Government.

From said article:

"Any suggestion that the government is reneging on the commitment set out at the start of this national emergency is entirely wrong," the spokesperson added.
"We have been clear councils must continue to provide safe accommodation for those that need it.
"The latest figures show more than 90% of rough sleepers known to councils at the beginning of this crisis have now been made offers of safe accommodation under the 'Everyone In' scheme."

Infection rates already increasing. Also from their 'estimates' (which is probably an underestimate based on other data so far) it seems London is actually helping to bring it down. However, especially with people using the tube more etc..., that could easily shoot up again.

I'll be curious to see what the governments response is if it does keep going up, because they said they would only continue to ease the lockdown if the data allows, yet they have given dates for some measures that are already being taken as gospel.

Teachers apparently being unreasonable because they want their workplace to be safe for themselves, the kids and their families. Suppose we have to blame someone...

If my wife's trip Morrisons and another friend to the same shop report are anything to go by we should be back in full lockdown by the end of next week....

I don't think the R value is representative of current rates, there's a significant lag as far as I'm aware.

Decisions should be made on long term trends not short term changes.

Well I'm just going by what the government has said as they have 'followed the science' all the way. Johnson made it clear in his speech on Sunday that everything is based around the R value.

I agree they shouldn't make knee-jerk decisions, but I am curious as to whether they will follow the science if it continues to go up or if they follow through with dates given for political reasons and try to find other reasons to justify it.

I hope so on the former - and I hope not on the latter.

I'll confess my bias though - I'm a chiropractor...

Depends what you mean by "immune"
Some viruses mutate quickly, or have many different strains, so you're immunity is present, but out of date a few weeks later.
Some provide immunity that tapers off without booster.
Some viruses mutate slowly, or have a few different strains, so you're immunity is out of date a few years later.
Some few provide immunity for life.

Example - plenty of people will get the common cold 2 or 3 times each winter. Flu vaccine is different each year as they have to estimate which strains they think are going to be rife (and if they're right in foresight, they'll be wrong in hindsight, almost by definition). A one-off polio vaccine should see you immune for life.
Someone who understands immunisation and viral infections.
I'm firmly in looking for a cure camp rather than a vaccine.
Only 2 vaccines in our history have a 100% success rate.
Rinderpest google that one guys.
Smallpox which took 160 yrs to be effective.
Think HIV vaccines were meh at best but now we have a hugely effective treatment ( cure) it's a tablet a day.

Morrisons is terrible, went there an hour or so ago - few more people than usual in masks and gloves but the vast majority not arsed at all,
Kids running all over the place, old people chatting in the isles.
Every time I go shopping I despair at the state of the general public

Had my first fish and chip supper (takeaway) in 2 months. I've missed fish and chips more than mcdonalds.

When Patrick Vallance said that 20k deaths would be a good result in the original broadcast, I could imagine various civil servants throwing their hands in the air and kicking their TVs in. I thought the same on Sunday when Boris mentioned dates for phases. I understand that he was trying to present a message that things are progressing and that there is a loght at the end of the tunnel, but there was a big cost to that upside. He's put himself between and a hard place. Should things fail to progress as hoped (what are the chances?), he has a choice between renegging on his word or adding to the death toll in order to keep to his word. IIRC there were caveats added each time he mentioned a date, but it's naive beyond belief to think that everyone would have picked up on them and understood them - the average mouth breathing conga-dancer would have been too busy planning to meet their mates at the pub at opening time on 1st July to think what Boris actually meant.

Fingers crossed, they will be good to their word and follow the science.

Given the time that it takes to calculate R, it is never going to be representitive of the current rate. I read earlier in the week that it takes five days, sounds about right given that today (Friday) is the first time that it has been quoted (AFAIK) since Sunday. If that's the case, how many cycles constitute a long term trend?

The Morrisons in Coventry was a chuffing nightmare yesterday. They just let too many people in

Is this actually news?
Just thought it was funny... Didn't realize he was a nutjob...
"Piers Corbyn, the former Labour leader's brother, used a megaphone to tell the crowd that the pandemic was a "pack of lies to brainwash you and keep you in order", shouting: "Vaccination is not necessary"."
