[COVID-19] General Discussion

There's a better one out there as well but I can't find it. Not saying it will certainly work but it's the only real chance they've got. If Trump can portray himself as mildly competent he'll win.

I was at the supermarket this morning and the cashier was coughing and sneezing on the other side of the cash register. I'm glad I wore a mask and gloves. But how in the heck does a store allow their employees to come to work when they're sick during the middle of a pandemic?

He also claimed to know more about South Korea than anyone - asked the press if they knew how many people lived in Seoul, then said 38 million.
It's actually 9.9million, but if you google Seoul the wikipedia entry says "38m" underneath it....which is it's elevation above sea level, lol

Testing like you say can be important in implementing a mini lockdown and isolating carriers before it become a problem. You can't just stop flights because again major impacts, how do you test people coming in, for a new virus how long does testing take? Do we even have budgetary means to ramp up testing in time to even make that feasable?

Its easier, cheaper and less disruptive to curtail (if not stop) flights from certain places and order all travellers from those places to quarantine*. [same for passenger shipping]

Yeah, I know its a balls for us in aerospace, but we need to look at the wider impact - its an awful lot less disruptive overall than repeating the steps that got us to where we are now.

If the internal economy can be kept largely rolling, then the govt could more easily support airlines and aerospace suppliers through those measures than when they have to stop the whole country and put all areas of the economy on the proverbial ventilator. Besides - what would be the difference between that and now anyway? Essentially shuttering the airlines 6 weeks earlier? (and hopefully keeping all else going)

*its very unlikely the index patient for any novel virus would be within the UK, therefore unless its a species killer there should be information available by the time its crossing our shores.

The dopey **** probably went reading wiki beforehand then brought up SK so he could show off his knowledge too!

Governor of Montana pleading to Trump for more test kits.

Trump responds: I haven't heard anything about shortage of test kits in weeks and hasn't heard that testing has been a problem.:rolleyes:.

It seems that Faux and Friends may be in a bit of bother:

https://www.mediamatters.org/fox-ne...on-after-misleading-viewers-about-coronavirus

If you look at polls that show Republicans' views on certain issues, it's a completely different reality than people who gather their news from a wide array of sources.

And I think what's really interesting, I think unique about the Coronavirus story is that Fox News tried to do their original playbook, which was dismiss it as a hoax, say that this is another partisan attempt by Democrats to hurt Donald Trump, and this was the case where they could not prevent reality. Fox News is a very powerful media organization, but it cannot stop people from dropping dead. And what happened is that people did start dying. We did see hot spots in New York, on the West Coast and now we're seeing one in the deep South, which is getting closer to Trump country, and Fox News has had to pivot to actually cover this as a real story.

When I've been talking to Fox insiders over the last few days, there's a real concern inside the network that their early downplaying of the coronavirus actually exposes Fox News to potential legal action by viewers who maybe were misled and actually have died from this. I've heard Trish Regan's being taken off the air is, you know, reflective of this concern that Fox News is in big trouble by downplaying this virus and The New York Times reported days ago that the Murdoch family was privately taking the coronavirus seriously. The Murdochs, of course, own Fox News. So, they were taken personal steps to protect themselves while anchors like Trish Regan and Sean Hannity were telling viewers that it's a hoax and putting themselves in potentially mortal danger. So I think this is a case where Fox's coverage, if it actually winds up being proved that people died because of it, this is a new terrain in terms of Fox being possibly held liable for their actions.

Unbelievable!

you cant make this stuff up, throw around suggestions medical staff might be stealing equipment (ignoring the fact they just change them so much more) and then refuse to answer a question whilst telling reporters to be nice

yep, this crisis is just showing Trump's true colours. The accusation is based on a "story he heard" and is just classic Trump trying to divert from his mishandling and playing down the crisis for months .

He accuses his critics of disrespecting him, army corps, Mike Pence for doing a wonderful job and then does exactly the same thing to the very people who are on the front line and fighting to save people's lives. And it's also the sheer stupidity of his comment - of course bloody masks are going to go substantially up during a bloody epidemic. That's what the Governor in NYC has been telling him he needs more of because you can't keep using the same face mask.

I'm in California and from what I heard on the news today were about to be hit hard, like New York has been. I'm trying to think positive, but it's not always easy.
Crazy times!

It's all Trump's fault. Nothing to do with the Chinese or anyone else.

His mishandling of the crisis in the USA and downplaying since January is definitely Trump's fault.

No one is saying it is nothing to do with China's authorities, as opposed to "Chinese or anyone else" which you referred to in your post, specifically once the virus arose the leadership and authorities tried to mute those who brought it to their attention. No doubt China's communist leadership and Xi have a lot to answer for their handling and not shutting down those infected sooner from travelling outside of Wuhan. But viruses can happen anywhere in the world Ebola from Africa, Swine Flu from USA, but this one totally caught everyone off guard in western liberal democracies due to how fast it has moved, infected and killed. It is here now and we all have to handle it.

Recriminations will come later, against China's leadership but let's not turn this into let's blame the "Chinese" for this and create this Xenophobia against all Chinese people for this crisis.

Pence is saying that italy is the best comparison for the U.S. Does the Chinese government need to be held responsible? Yes. Does every world leader who doesn't respond to this need to be called out? Yes.

Don't give a toss about America at the minute. Got plenty to worry about at home.

Lucky I'm a key worker and still working for now.

Deaths in the UK higher than previous day which was expected if unfortunate.

Hopefully next week will see a decrease with 14 days of lock down behind us. Think they will keep the restrictions over Easter. Makes sense.

Big time fingers crossed for this.

There are now no options left on the table that don't come with an even frightful cost than what's been done already.

Think they will keep the restrictions over Easter. Makes sense.

Simply have to - if it was relaxed now, the second wave would come straight away and with virtually no ramp up warning it'd be like a Tsunami.
