[COVID-19] General Discussion

A mate was in Ireland before Xmas on a job and needed to show his covid passport to buy a burger.
He needed one to sit inside and eat the burger, not to buy it.

I'm fairly happy with our approach to covid passes, anyone who doesn't want a vaccine can socialise in outdoor spaces with reduced risk of transmission.

On the other hand we've been totally inadequate in increasing restrictions fast enough when required and reducing them when possible. If we were in a state similar to where we are now in about 15 months (the soonest possible stage for me) I'd consider moving to London for a couple years.

We've definitely protected those most vulnerable to the virus better than the UK but have handled reopening worse at every opportunity.

Yes they asked if he was sitting in or taking away and when he said sitting they asked for his covid passport

Why is it when I hear the words "independent panel" I find it hard to believe. Simple fact for me is that once again shows there is one rule for those with money and influence and one for rest.

Yeh I personally think it's a disgrace they let him.

It was the same in Italy even in summer!
In Slovakia it depends on the region: in Tatra mountains they ask for a covid passport and FFP2 mask everywhere even in caves, restaurants,on mountains, and in other regions it's sometimes not that strict.
In Poland no one cares about Covid passports unfortunately...not sure about Russia (my friends told me different things), probably will go there soon so will see.

I agree with you. IMHO, they $old out for what they hope will be better TV ratings/advertisement money because his name is a big draw, etc.

It's getting a pretty poor reaction in aus too, talks of boycotting his matches

Looks like Omnicon doesn't care too much about summer, number through the roof in aus, 10x previous record daily totals

To be fair, as long as the level of hospitalisation and deaths stays significantly lower then we don't need to panic.
Yeh, but have you seen the NHS staff off sick as a result though? Also these figures don't include reinfections.

Daily Covid cases still reporting from 27 December, which is probably due to the new year holiday weekend, but they are a week behind now.

It looks to me they will allow this Omicron to wash over the population to achieve the herd immunity they wanted back in March 2020.

Yeah, the only way out of this is herd immunity - ideally that's through vaccination, but realistically, with the way things are going, it looks like Omicron is going to take care of it for us

That's literally the best/only realistic possible outcome here

Only if it doesn't completely overwhelm the NHS which is why it had to abandoned in 2020. Have to say can't help but feel we'll be in a lengthy lockdown soon when it becomes clear its an unmanageable policy which could of been avoided.

I'm not sure - I can't see the Tories going for another lockdown
Too many rebels would vote against it (it'd pass with Labour's vote, but it'd be bad for the party unity), it'd be bad for the economy (which is their main concern), would be bad in the polls (which I imagine they're very concerned about atm), and they'll know compliance will be very low

I could see them reducing restrictions rather than increasing, tbh - following the American lead in reducing isolation time (despite the science not backing it) etc.

That's what is stopping it currently, once the news moves onto an NHS that is completely ****** with not enough ventilators, staff and people dying in hallways or without beds. It becomes a different ballgame.

Basically the government are playing with fire because they can't impose more restrictions but the scientific community on the business end of this generally think they'll be forced to eventually.

I think Omicron spreads so rapidly that the time for lockdown to be effective has passed. I have not been an advocate of the herd immunity option in earlier outbreaks but this one seems less damaging and it's debateable whether a lockdown will have much impact on it now as it's likely spread through a huge segment of the population already. If we were going to lock down at all, we needed to do it right at the very start. If people are taking some days off sick but otherwise the system is holding up ok, I think we should just ride this one out. The vaccination program should continue though as I'm pretty sure we would have been looking at a worse scenario without it.
