British & Irish Lions Back Row

Nothing, just saw it and posted it up as it's relevant.

It's mildly surprising for me as I would've expected SOB to have the better linebreak/carries stats, and Robshaw the better tackle/turnover rate.

Oh right, I had you lined up if you said that Robshaw had superior stats. :p

Great thing about being a Munster fan is that you don't get offended by Lions discussions. Bad thing is that I have no reason to be offfended because very few Munster players will be involved.. Anyway I can't actually name my Lions backrow. Like everyone has said there is so many options, and we are only two matches into the six nations. I have to say though that it will probably be our area of huge depth. Every Lion nation has a full back row that is constantly fighting for their spot.

Thought that myself, but Accenture is the official stats body, so I presume that BBC's count was way out.

Don't think it's just BBC's stats every bit of media I saw had it also think one of the Irish coaches said it. Guess it depends what each one counts as a tackle for him.

Also SO'B is never really going to gain many metres are make linebreaks being used the way he is by Ireland.

Well there isn't much in that by any means. The penalty stat jumps out obviously, but to be honest I think that's more of a reflection of the way the two teams play. We're scummy as **** at the breakdown these days.

Torygraph has O'Brien on 23 tackles over all. Testrugby.com has him on 21. Think a lot of it has to do with counting double tackles or not.

edit: The main dodgy stat imo are the weights. If Robshaw's heavier than O'Brien I'd be really, really surprised.

They acknowledge 23 for the Wales game and 6 for the England game. I presume its an error on their comparison page?

Same. SOB has slimmed down a lot since moving to 7, but still thought he'd be heavier. Expected him to be shorter, too.

Statistics are like a bikini. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital.

Ever since Kidney stuck him at 7 he just doesn't get the opportunity anymore to ball carry - he's a completely different player now and I'm not sure if its for the better. But I suppose when you want Ferris, Heaslip and O'Brien in the backrow you've got to do these sort of things. I wish bloody Chris Henry got some more opportunities - I'd love to see him play a part in the mid-week matches.

O'Brien can still carry very well just using him for pick and go's and slow ball of 9 don't allow him to use his ability to it's potential.

Chris Henry was incredibly unlucky, he was the form 7 in Europe based on HEC form and then Kidney would rather ship O'Brien to 7 to make room for O'Mahoney, who is a good player but the negatives he has on O'Brien's attacking game out weigh the positives. Had Henry been given the chance he deserved he could very well have secured a Lions spot as he's made for the types of games Ireland have just had.

I expected Robshaw to be heavier but that's largely because like Olyy I though O'Brien was shorter. He doesn't give the impression of 'tallness'. Anyway, not much in these stats at all.

With Tackles England and Robshaw are lucky to have so many guys tackling like maniacs... Espn stats says the following:

Parling 22 Tackles
Robshaw 21 tackle
Wood 21 tackles
Haskell + Morgan 18 tackles between them
Tom Youngs 16 tackles
Launchbury 11 tackles
Cole 10
Marler 9

I wouldn't take espnscrum stats as gospel, but it still suggests pretty great teamwork. Without looking at Irelands stats, I'd imagine O Brien and Heaslip are significantly busier than others in that area?

Nah think Ryan had something like 18 against Wales with McCarthy not far behind.

EDIT: This article from RTE says for the Wales match Healy had 21, O'Brien 18, Ryan 18 and McCarthy 16.

Draggs type in google 6 Nations players comparisons tool and it pops up.

i think the back row should be 6.Robshaw 7.Brown 8.Faletau Robshaw because he is a great leader on the pitch and has a good friendship with the england team. Kelly Brown because like Robshaw hes a good leader on the pitch and is getting on well with his team and Faletau because hes a great player only 2o when he was in the world cup and played well and since then he is getting better
