Booze Thread

Three months since my last drink and I honestly can't see myself drinking again now that I've gotten used to life without booze.

I wasn't a big drinker (apart from when I was a student and in my 20/30's) but until three months ago I fell into a routine of having a few every Friday night because I'd convinced myself I deserved it after a tough week at work or just whatever reason I could think of.

I bloody love waking up on a Saturday feeling fresh and use that as motivation not to drink now. The key for me has been to find things to replace drinking with. Going to the gym on a Friday evening or doing some activity that doesn't involve drinking (or the temptation to drink) helps massively. I do still go to the pub but can make 2-3 pints of zero (chased down with a pint of water) last for a few hours. One thing I won't do is judge others who still drink. It's a personal choice and people what people drink is up to them.

Guinness zero is my go to drink and tastes almost like the full fat version. Peroni zero is also decent. I can make 2-3 pints of zero (chased down with a pint of water) easily last for a few hours. Looks like I could be in Dublin for all of January and so will be in the right place to see if Guinness zero tastes any better over there.

Fair play, great thing to do and better that its working well immediately!

I didn't drink from new year to St. Patricks day at the start of this year and loved it. Don't think I want to give it up fully but incorporating long breaks regularly and pacing myself better (I'm not a messy or problematic drunk but I can ruin days on a hangover easy) is definitely on the agenda.

My entire Christmas party season seems to fall in November this year, I'll definitely be pacing myself then and then a big break in New year expected again.

Long breaks and pacing yourself sound good. Don't think there's a one size fits all solution - we all have to find the right balance and do what suits us best. I find that not drinking has improved my mood and my quality of sleep massively. Even 2-3 pints or a bottle of vino would often give me a broken/disrupted night's sleep. A good night's kip is key for me functioning well the next day.

Never say never of course. I may one day decide to raise a glass on New year's eve but I just found it hard to go out and only have one or two drinks. It's easier to tell friends "I've given up the booze" than it is to say "I'm just having the one tonight" which in my experience brings much more peer pressure (and stick).

Have a merry Xmas and enjoy yourselves. But please leave the car at home. No excuses!

Right everyone, on the subject of booze there is some crazy **** going on over in Ireland. I'm back over working and currently in Killarney. Went out for a social pint with my Irish colleagues, went into a lovely Irish pub and they both ordered....Coors light. Yes the bane of all good lager drinkers in the UK is now apparently the drink to have in Ireland and despite me trying to explain that in the UK its considered cheap even in Wether spoons they said it was better than Heineken, Guinness and Smithicks and on top of that it's more expensive than those 3!

Worlds going to **** and you can't even blame Musk.

I really don't understand it either. I'm pretty sure Coors and Rockshore drinkers over here are just afraid to admit to not liking beer. They'd be cider drinkers in the UK with better options there.

My group rarely strays from Guinness with Moretti or heineken after that. Never liked Smithwicks now I must admit.

As a bitter drinker I converted to Guinness rather than that **** served up as Smithicks when I was working over there. I can still blame mush.

Ironically I was living and working on the original home of Guinness.

Sadly for all, my drinking days are all but over. Got to the point where I hate hangovers so much that I barely drink anymore. Unless it's an event where I'm out, I won't drink. Can't remember the last time I had a beer or a glass of wine at home.

Probably helps that my missus barely touches the stuff so there's no reason for me too either.

I'm going that way. Intend to drink less than 50 days of the year. Currently on 3 (all in Cardiff last weekend which led to a rough Monday and Tuesday). Won't again until April.

Also plan to start containing myself at some big events whereas to this point I tended to blow the lid off on anything planned in advance.

Also realised I don't change that much when drinking loads, a bit more talkative but 2-4 will do that, don't need 8+.

I am the same I would say. 3 years ago I would drink at least 150 days a year and 50 of those would be 8+ pints. This year I will drink on no more than 40 days and 10 will be of that nature.

I rarely have more than 3 or 4 and always pay a few more quid to have something nice.

The exception will be at this year's Army V RAF in Gloucester where I will go on two proper all day sessions

Approaching nine months booze free and no regrets here. Better quality of sleep, no hangovers and plenty of money saved (not just booze but late night food, taxis etc).

Guinness zero is my go to in the pub but I find it much easier to make a couple of pints last a few hours if I chase them down with a pint of water. Peroni zero if I'm out for a meal but tbh I could easily manage with an orange juice or a San Pellegrino lemon which I like. Don't get these expensive alcohol free fruity bottled ciders. May as well have a OJ or other soft drink for a fraction of the price.

Something I have tried as an alternative is CBD oil. Few drops under the tongue at night and I find it chills me out a bit and gives me a good night's sleep. It's also meant to relieve pain.

You've got the right two.
I'm not tea-total, but I've not been drinking to excess since Uni (25 years ago).

I'm now only having alcohol with rugby (playing or watching), and it's usually just the one

Guinness 0.0 is good until it slightly warms up. Other than that it's a superb zero alcohol replica
I find it too sweet. Lacks the bitterness of the hops in the alcoholic version. If they could only change that it would be 👌
