Former Japan coach Jean-Pierre Elissalde has been handed the reins at Bayonne after the Top 14 side axed their coaching trio.

Typical Bayonne

their owners sign their players and then blame the coach when it goes wrong

they sack their coach pretty much every season, sometimes more than once a season

That's the thing isn't it. They have a huge amount of new and exciting talent, but it's not like throwing a lot of money in new players will create a great team overnight.

For me they signed the wrong players. They´re recruitment was simply wrong. Big name players but aged and not the players they once were. Neemia Tialata, Mark Chisholm, Joe Rokocoko, Cédric Heymans... Mike Phillips is a different story but only him. These guys are big name players but, Phillips aside, have all arrived one World Cup too late. Consider how the likes of Montpellier, Castres and Agen have recruited. They´re signed more players and got more out of them. They are not exactly the biggest spenders either. Age can be a blessing. Martín Scelzo for Agen has contributed a great deal but unlike Tialata he´s been playing in France for years, has won the Top 14 and speaks French.

Throwing around money does work but it needs to be directed and done by people who know what they are doing. Stade Français have improved out of sight this season thanks to the new arrivals. Losing Beauxis has been outstanding for the club while Toulouse have got nothing from him so far.

Bayonne could well drop to the Pro d2. Will be interesting to see...

Same old Bayonne ... they have now sacked their second coach of the season, despite Jean-Pierre Elissalde taking over a poor team which was built by the owner who signed the players, Didier Faugeron has taken over, and probably won't last too long

Hope Phillips has a relegation release clause. Perp could do with a scrum half...
