Bastareaud assaulted in Wellington!

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (allyoop @ Jun 25 2009, 10:09 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div>
The attack on French rugby player Mathieu Bastareaud â€" which has caused much soul searching by politicians and rugby administrators â€" may not have happened on Wellington streets as claimed. The attack on Bastareaud had been reported as happening early on Sunday morning, when he was returning to his team's hotel after a night on the town after his side's loss to the All Blacks.

Bastareaud told police he was attacked from behind by five men, leaving him with a serious eye injury, but his recollection was patchy.

However, police had been given CCTV footage showing an uninjured Bastareaud walking into his hotel with two other players and two women, TV One reported.

Police planned to comment on the inquiry on Friday afternoon, Inspector Pete Cowan said.

Yesterday, police said they had identified two women who had accompanied three members of the French team back to the Holiday Inn hotel.

Holiday Inn general manager Heather Idoine-Riley said that the hotel was co-operating with police and would not comment further.

Bastareaud has returned to France to recover from his injuries.

Because Bastareaud could not identify his attackers, the French team had not made an official complaint.

Meanwhile, police have spoken to several women who were with French rugby players last weekend but have yet to speak to the two women they believe hold the key to the alleged assault case.

Inspector Pete Cowan, of Wellington Police, said several women had come forward following a police appeal for information earlier in the week.

They had been with players Saturday night and Sunday morning, in the wake of French team's 14-10 loss to the All Blacks at Westpac Stadium.

However, the two women who accompanied three members of the French team back to the Holiday Inn early Sunday morning have not been identified.

Police still want to hear from them.

''Several women have come forward and we've spoken to them which is great,'' said Mr Cowan.

''But the two women that we were trying to identify have not come forward.''

Mr Cowan again refused to say who the three French players were, or if Bastareaud, 20, was among them.

Well it's over now, Bastareaud just made a letter to the french federation, google translated as follows:

"I would like to go back on the incidents that occurred in New Zealand. I owe the truth to everyone. Saturday evening, I returned to the hotel, having had too much to drink. I fell down in my room, I struck the night table and I opened the cheekbone. I was ashamed, I panicked and I thought that I would be expelled from the Equipe de France. I told this story thinking that it wouldn't make such a fuss, but realizing now the importance it is taking, I'd rather telli the truth. I did not want to offend my family. I panicked and I was depressed. I apologize from the Federation of New Zealand, the city of Wellington, players of the "Equipe de France", the staff, my club, my friends and to all those affected by this story"

Very immature reaction from a player who's only 20. Hope he gets severely punished. Sorry to all kiwis, now it's our turn to have our reputation tarnished.

I know a certain CA whose next post will probably refer to garlic, frog, snails, rainbow warriors, cheese and military defeats.

Personally, I think it's kind of funny that he did it falling into a table.

In response to Teh Mite, I agree that the bottle throwing is unacceptable and could leave New Zealand rugby fans with a very bad reputation if it doesn't stop. I'm not sure how it's possible to put it to a stop, but I think perhaps the All Blacks and the NZRU need to quit side-stepping issues in their desperation to remain PC and just come out and say what needs to be said. Which is what exactly, I don't really know.

I never relish having anyone have to apologise for anything, but suffice to say Teh Mite, hence why I get over things so fast and are quick to make friends with people after an argument, Logorrhea. I'm just glad that New Zealand is not being made out to be a horrible place.

Even had this incident happen I would never say that a whole country has to hang it's head in shame. I have a little girl who is the sweetest thing in the world. She never hurts anything and that comment included her. Thats why I was annoyed! Not all of a nation must hang it's head, feeling shame and guilt for the actions of criminals.

I've felt that largely Elgringoborracho and some other french were not heavy handed in persecuting us, so I'm more than happy with them anyhow. :)

Regarding the bottle throwing. I am sure that this may impact Carisbrooks chances or Otago in general of hosting future events and the Otago Rugby Football Union has said that it's going to ensure that future culprits will receive bans.

Precisely the conclusion I tried to say much earlier in the piece. There is no country with a population of 100% saints. :) Although someone told me that I was in a glasshouse and that I shouldn't throw stones, lol. ;)

f***ing disgraceful for a 20 yr old rugby player to go out, get drunk and fall down.

The French are always at it - look at this, women in the showers and everything:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_kaBGyV8sE

Seriously, is there more to this? He went in to the hotel with two women and two men - fell off the top of a five-in-the-bed sex romp?

If I were a New Zealander, I would only personnaly forgive Mr Bastareaud if he offered me the occasion to proove him that I stand alcohol and able to keep straight and coherent even after a standart craic !!!

Immature behavior of course, but also sign of the times that not only audience need to be educated, but also players, who should'nt start to act like a Star before becoming pricesely a player.
France fans will for sure give him the occasion to learn his lesson, out of any purgatory period that might be designed for him by the FFR...

The story doesn't make sense. Why would he lie about getting his head hit on a table. It looked like he was punched to me. My guess is the French team has some internal problems. I hope this doesn't give the French team a bad reputation.

I've been to matches in New Plymouth, Auckland and Hamilton and every one of these matches involved bottle throwing. At the Auckland match the bottles were thrown at an Australian fan who decided to stand up and shout 'AUSSIE! AUSSIE! AUSSIE! OI! OI! OI!' and at the Hamilton match bottles and the like were directed at Stephen Donald whilst Piri Weepu was lining up a shot at goal.

The point of this is to say that the bottle throwing problem is not just happening in Otago, it's happening in the whole of New Zealand. The NZRU should be implenting bans and making sure that the secuirty guards don't just stand around doing nothing and actually punish the people who are throwing things on the field.

After seeing him he obviously didn't fall on a table. Something went on inside that hotel room.

Bastareaud attacked by a table... who will believe that ? I saw his face and he looks like he was beaten up.

He was with Picamoles and Ouedraogo that night apparently. I believe there was a fight... it happens, that's no such thing. It could have been fixed without the press. Now he (or them, I believe he was advised) embarassed everybody with that story. Such a shame.

It is a very sad incident. Hopefully he can move on from this as he is only 20 yrs old so to happen to someone this young can be damaging (not that older people are more/less vulnerable to it).

I glad they don't hold any grudges towards NZ as a whole because of the actions a some stupid idiots whom must have been molested as a child.

Hope he recovers quickly.[/b]

Aww waste of time feeling sad for the fella.

Sorry guys, i had some insider info on this back when this story broke about him being assaulted but i guess it's a bit late now.

He definately was assaulted by one of his own team according to reports i received. 3 guys, 2 girls.. 2 girls don't want 3 guys so 1 has to take one for the team but that one doesn't want to, situation gets heated and ends up with Basteraud nursing a sore eye..
