A Political Thread pt. 2

The count dankula case is an absolute disgrace to our society, the police found the video, and took it to a Jewish temple to ask if they found it offensive.

The judge stated the phrase over and over, before ironically stating 'context doesn't matter' and somehow didn't call for his own arrest.
A judge said that? Wow.

The UK government criminalises speach...

I meanbits not rocket science. Post rap lyrics, get a criminal record lol.

In 2024 nearly 100 people were criminalised under the online safety act for fake news. They spread a non government approved message!

There are literally hundreds of cases of UK of authoritarianism.
You can literally be criminalised under the public order act for saying a swear word in the vicinity of a police officer.
Scottish residents were just told not to pray near their front windows because they lived within a certain radius of an abortion clinic.
The words 'fat people are lazy'was investigated as a hate crime, and let's not forget, if a police officer looks like your 'lesbian nanna' off you go to the nick.

And none of this refers to the disgusting speach, the speach I disagree with but I agree should be said. If all speach isn't free, no speach is free, that's the standard.
100s out of 70million people.

You can say what you like, doesn't mean there are no consequences.

General question, why are people wanting the spread of hate under the guise of free speech?

Also, the police will investigate if someone reports it.

I can't keep hearing 'say what you like, but there are consequences' when that's the literal definition of suppression of speech.

Now platforms can kick you off (which I also disagree with, especially under governmental pressure) but being criminalised for 0 complaints of you making a joke to your partner of a nartsee pug... disgraceful

How do you decided what speech you do and don't disagree with or what you find offensive compared to me?

Basic legal guide is what would the average person on the Clapham omnibus think.

Right, so you want people to be freely racist / sexist outwardly with no consequences? It's all jokes?

That is the problem with criminalizing speech based simply on offensiveness, no two people's will be the same. If it not criminalized, it comes down to the individual consumer to decide what they are or are not offended by and to act accordingly.

This is the 2nd part of it. Hate speech laws in the Uk are terrifying, because the offence is based 100% on the 'victims' perception.

So if you deem yourself a protected characteristic, you essentially have carte blanche and it's up to the courts to decide.

Adds to the merkiness of free speech, when the law literally says if you say something a protected characteristic doesn't like, it's a hate crime. And this is before we go in to non crime hate incidents ffs

When it comes to the government arresting people yes, 100%. Social consequences are another thing all together and you have to deal with those based upon what you say
I agree with this 100%, and the horrible speech doesn't have to be a joke...

Some people deserve to get societally punished for their careful opinions, but speech is only free when it protects all of it.

Comedy clubs are getting increasingly police contacts for audience members reporting hate speech

Colour me shock and surprised when someone whonsays their a free speech absolutionsinst it's essentially what it would boil down to.

Because it's what it always does.

It ****** me off

"What can't I tell a racist joke to my friends?"

You absolutely can my dude in the privacy of your own home. What you can't do is spam it to a public forum. And that's the key word "public"

Now a legal resident studying in the USA is being deported for protesting on campus. So you care so much about freedom of speech, you are trying to thrown people out the country for their expression.
I would tread very carefully on this case. It's very complex and the facts are still being sorted.

Operative word is resident. The person is not a citizen. They do not have the same rights as citizens.

So should I be allowed to stand outside the local mosque and shout abuse about Allah. Or shout at women going into the abortion clinic? Or say what I want about female rugby players?

Your understanding of a protected characteristic is wrong. They are protected characteristics under the discrimination / equality acts.

Which are civil and not part of criminal law. Unless you think we shouldn't have discrimination and equality laws as well.

May I have examples of these social consequences?
There are plenty...

Let's say Mr Adam Dolph was a racist. He spouts racist nonsense nonsense online, so he's banned for breaking terms and conditions. He then spouts his nonsense at work, and he's sacked for not upholding the ethos of the company, he then spouts his nonsense in the pub, he's banned, so walking home he spouts his nonsense on the street and he receives a slap in his chop...

Currently, Adam is at threat at criminality for spouting his nonsense anywhere, so what does he do, change his mind, turn his back on his racism, and embrace diversity? Does telling Adam he can't spouts his thoughts without the threat of prison fix the problem? We all know that answer is no

Or Adam gets a cricket bat into the head and rolled into a canal. Is that a social consequence?

So how has suppression of speech impinged on your life?

The Supreme Court ruled 9-0 "hate speech" is protected by the first amendment. Brandenburg v. Ohio if you want to dig into the brief and per curiam opinion.

Let me repeat that to the people still saying America and the UK are the same: From the most conservative to the most liberal judges in highest court in America they UNANIMOUSLY ruled hate speech is fully PROTECTED by the first amendment.

What part of my eTA and visa free agreement with the IK put restrictions on my rights in the USA other than restrictions of length and stay and whether I am working or not impingines 1st amendments rights?
