A Political Thread pt. 2

  • National Identity - A complex philosophical question is it part of being British? Do we loose something of ourselves if we remove it?
Short answers are yes and I don't think so. Listen to our national anthem. How many peeps know all the verses off by heart apart from the main verse? Nothing to do with being British but rather our nation of falls on the monarchy being sustained.

For me the monarchy is basically symbolic of 'Great Britain'. It's this idea that sets us apart and people use as an excuse to feel superior towards other countries. "Oh look at our history and fine institutions."

Personally the idea of being born into wealth, especially wealth that is unearned or comes at the exploitation of others (so majority?) is just wrong. There is a reason why the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. The monarchy for me symbolises that inequality, where as for those in power they try to use it to symbolise why we should keep the status quo (again back to look at our wonderful history and achievements). Apart from the exceptions the poor still stay poor and the rich still stay rich. It's a system that needs to change because it's not working and eventually it's going to explode in our faces.

I also don't understand how not supporting the monarchy means you aren't patriotic. The monarchy does not equal the UK and apart from the ceremonial side is pretty much redundant in terms of how the country operates outside of the Queen giving some good advice.

The only justification I have is similar to Adam Radwan being picked for England. Does the Royal Family bring in more public money than it spends? Even then they shouldn't be exempt from taxes and the other rules for everyone.

Quite frankly this country is stuck in the past and it refuses to let go. Getting rid of the monarchy would be a step in the right direction.

Would we be a better democracy by having more representation or less? Would you want more unelected officials in our system or more?
One of the major flaws in democracy is that if everyone is allowed the vote that includes idiots too.

In all honesty I've rarely found that most people are stupid, they are often just uninformed or uneducated. Even educated people can not know about politics. I've said before about how I know university students who had no idea they were voting for their local candidate and expected to see the party leaders names on the ballot.

Reality is you are never going to have everyone properly informed about the issues facing the countries, that's why you elect people to study and make decisions for you. Issue is that we seem to be electing poorer and poorer politicians every year. They don't care about running the country properly, they don't care about being honest with the public. It's not about doing a good job, it's purely about winning an election and it works. The papers too have a lot to answer for.

I'm not sure what the solution is, but I don't see it improving anytime soon and I still expect 3 word slogans and populist views to win regardless of how genuine they actually are.

Looks like Fox News has sacked Tucker Carlson - possible fallout from the Dominion case?
i.e. If he's said not going to play ball and will continue to spout the stop the steal BS

Apparently they were still advertising his show as recently as earlier today so looks like whatever happened happened quickly

Where does he even go from here?
Go fully online (youtube? Podcasts?) like the other alt right shills? I would've thought his audience base would be too old for a move like that
I don't think so. Evidence obtained by Dominion showed that in private Carlson did not believe the election was stolen and seemed upset at lying to their viewers about it (right before going out and lying to the viewers like the moral less scumbag he is). I wonder if they will do what they did after Bill O'Reilly left. He was their big name and they wondered if they could get anyone to match him, they went for the even more batshit insane and dislikeable route and it worked. Now you wonder whether they will double down on it or not. They still have plenty of awful hosts who an take the slot.

I heard a similar arguement about jury service. People will always bring prejudice, personal opinions etc into the decision making process. With complex fraud trials your average man / woman good and true doesn't really have a clue what's gone on and barristers quoting latin even just Mens Rea, Actus Rea and radom bits of Keats etc doesn't help matters either. Basically it was argued some people simply aren't bright enough for complex jury trials.

I once saw a Doctor torn apart by a judge for trying to explain complex medical events that later caused a person to die. The Judge was saying things like 'I can't understand it, how can the jury' The poor old Dr couldn't explain it that simply because the answer was based on medical terminology. He might as well have said ' Some f@cker hit him on the head, at some point after that he died".

Unicorn companies are an actual thing... Hard to see what point is trying to be scored here?

The point I think which is trying to be made is the unicorns and rainbows which were promised by the Leaver campaigners and supporters before and after the EU Referendum.

Especially the benefits to business, which haven't happened as highlighted by some of the questions to the PM

The 2024 US Geriatrics election. The other one also a traitor to the US constitution. Couldn't make it up.

Not that I am aware of. Although @Lé Ddanno may be of some help?

Here's the link to the article:
For one who knows the pain of racism, Diane Abbott shows such ignorance

To be fair only paying a couple of quid atm for subscription for next couple of months. There's some good deals out there. Managed to get 4 months for £1 before re negotiating. Only downside is that it is a Murdoch paper.
Sorry I'm late:

Cheers. Was really at @Ragey Erasmus's request. But @Which Tyler posted an archived link earlier. Although clicking on my link I think you could read it for free as part of 1 free view per month. Still, same article as I see that the journalist writes for the New statesman.

Good team work. 👍

BBC News - Bank of England economist says people need to accept they are poorer

god this guy is such a *******. Proper "know your place peasants and be grateful about it" energy. So on the one hand we have a government trying to feed us the tripe that things are going well and on the other we have this arsehole saying we simply need to accept being poorer.

Attempting to turn demands for wages rises from a response to inflation into a cause of it is disgusting. Everyone knows inflation has not been driven by wage rises.

BBC News - Record number of people relying on food donations

This country has been woefully mismanaged at best and intentionally ****** over for the benefit of the few at worst. To think the Tories have the nerve to claim they are "getting in with the job" when this is the state of things. **** them to hell.

Yes and no. For sure it's evolved. Much like how Christianity is very canny with the way it's moved the goalposts over the years.
I think you're confusing Christianity and wokeness. Our true goalposts have not moved in thousands of years. It's people like you that change goalposts and then fall to the ground and cry when true Christians stand true to their faith. To better explain, you(and most of the people on this forum) don't have a problem that Christians move goalposts, just the opposite. You have a problem that we're not willing to move those goalposts. Just relax man, if what YOU believe is right, and what I believe is totally wrong and silly, it wouldn't have cost you anything at all. Me on the other hand, would have wasted A LOT of time. Hakuna Matata and all those nice things.

I would disagree obviously firstly you have an Old Testament and a New Testament. There was a shift in messaging right there. Secondly, what sect of Christianity are you as there are dozens of them, because, as I say, it's shifted into different factions of people who believe different things.

Attitudes on homosexuality has changed amongst some Christian's, the pope no longer burns women at the stake for witchcraft. Our understanding of science over the centuries has consistently disproven many Christian "truths" over the years which the church has obviously had to shift their stance on. Most Christian's don't believe the Earth is 6000 years old anymore, for example.

For the record I think moving the goalposts is a good thing, which is why science is great as it does this constantly. What I don't think is cool is people over the last few thousand years saying they have the answer to everything and when they get shown they don't they change their answer to meet the demands of the time. It's self survival.

I don't know what you mean about the wokeness stuff to be honest so you'll have to elaborate. Our social attitudes have defiantly shifted which is great, I expect it will continue to do so.

If Christ were born today he'd decried as being too woke.
