A Political Thread pt. 2

Abbott it such a *** and such easy, low hanging fruit for others to attack. She really offers nothing to Labour and is just a mistake waiting to happen.

This is the article which she was responding to.

Racism is black and white

Tomiwa Owolade claims that Irish, Jewish and Traveller people all suffer from "racism" ("Racism in Britain is not a black and white issue. It's far more complicated", Comment). They undoubtedly experience prejudice. This is similar to racism and the two words are often used as if they are interchangeable.

It is true that many types of white people with points of difference, such as redheads, can experience this prejudice. But they are not all their lives subject to racism. In pre-civil rights America, Irish people, Jewish people and Travellers were not required to sit at the back of the bus. In apartheid South Africa, these groups were allowed to vote. And at the height of slavery, there were no white-seeming people manacled on the slave ships.

Pretty idiotic comment really on a pretty good article which recognises that racism is multidimensional.

Also the idea that white people can't be victims of racism... A few million Jews and Slaves massacred by the Nazis would beg to differ.

Apparently not everyone got that alarm today.

Basically means if you didn't get one you're not deemed special in the event of a nuclear attack. 😜

What is about this group and Jewish people?

She's wholeheartedly apologised and is suspended pending an investigation. Starmer should but loose but unlike Corbyn she has retracted her words so will likely survive. I'm sure the people of Hackney can find a young person replace her that is just as passionate.

Yeah that apology is a load of ****.

Sounds way more like "I submitted my draft with none of my team vetting my stupidity first".

It's not an off the cuff remark, she wrote A LETTER TO THE OBSERVER and tried to dismiss it on the same grounds you would a spelling mistake...

Surprised she didn't blame it on her diabetes. Just has a habit of putting her foot in her mouth. She already comes across as someone with a massive chip on her shoulder.

Good article in the Times today from Tomiwa Owolade on why Diane Abbot's letter was particularly tone deaf. Shame he didn't print it in the Guardian.

Any link past the paywall?
Not that I am aware of. Although @Lé Ddanno may be of some help?

Here's the link to the article:
For one who knows the pain of racism, Diane Abbott shows such ignorance

To be fair only paying a couple of quid atm for subscription for next couple of months. There's some good deals out there. Managed to get 4 months for £1 before re negotiating. Only downside is that it is a Murdoch paper.

Declining support amongst younger gen and increased indifference.
TBH he will be blamed for whatever happens but it's not really his fault. He has the whole Diana thing over his head but the rest of the scandals appear to be other royals making themselves dislikeable (Andrew, Harry, William and probably others).

I really can't understand why anyone would be ardently pro-royalist. Most people will likely end up as either apathetic, anti but don't see the point changing or anti and want change. The simpering and fawning the press give the royals though is so cringeworthy. When Phillip and Queenie died, it just went on and on and on.

Ode to history, british culture, constitutional security etc
They don't really do anything Constitutionally or offer any sort of security there. I know what the reasons are, I was getting at I can't understand why someone would think that's a valid reason not just to keep them but to ardently support the institution and people in it itself (ie turning a blind eye to royal scandals, to the various excesses of the royalty, constantly singing their praises etc). I'm anti monarchy but also don't see the cons as being big enough to justify actually getting rid of it yet.

Even more weird when you see support for the monarchy amongst the Welsh and Scots.
Why's that? Especially amongst the Scots?

Firstly you've got the Britishness part (queue High School Musical cast singing "We're all in this together"), but also the historical aspect which ties Scotland very much into the royal family

Disagree on the first point; although it is likely never gonna happen, the monarchy is, in theory at least, capable of a self destructive action to remove a dictatorial figure in the UK if one ever came to power, though it would destroy itself in the process.
