A Political Thread pt. 2

Is he really a troll, though?

For me a troll is someone on a wind up who doesn't necessarily believe what he's saying but he's saying it to get a rise out of people.

He just seemed a tad conspiracy brained which is a trend you see it a lot of people these days.
1x fairly calm(ish), reasoned response is always worth it in my opinion. There are lot of people who are passionate, completely misinformed but not brain dead or on the wind up. I always try to give them a chance to do some research or think over something that isnt just regurgitating a media headline.

Well that leadership challenge lasted all of 24hrs. :D

I've worked with Scottish Muslims and I can attest that on average they let their religion interfere far less with their world view than a really devout Scottish Christian. Most of them just practice Islam out of a sense of tradition and respect for their parents. Yousaf has come out with exactly the right response whereas Forbes has put her foot in it.

I agree though I'd say that them doing their own research is the main problem. "Do your own research" is often a line the conspiracy nutters spout ignoring the fact they do next to no research and just parrot the lines from some alternative media source on YouTube.

This is the main reason why we need to make philosophy/critical thinking mandatory for 6 year olds and up.

Can't believe the voter ID stuff is for real. Yet another Tory win on top of the biased system and gerrymandering. Democracy is just a word in this country.

He's not deluded, I think he knows exactly how much **** he's in but he's never going to say to Russian's "****** up here guys, sorry about all your dead relatives".
Delusion leads to more delusion to justify the means though. Was from the beginning and believes Ukraine should not even exist as a nation. How does he get away with it by blaming others for own actions?

Not just kids, but sex

She also "abhors" the word Sunday as being of pagan origin, favouring "Sabbath".

Just wait until she finds out that Sabbath is the Saturday.
Not to mention the origins of the words Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
January, February, March, April, May, June and July too, for that matter.

Oh, and she's going to have a fit when she discovers Christmas and Easter.

Maybe she should have had a word with Tim Fallon about the advisability of being open about the influence of her religion whilst involved in British politics.

She's honest I'll give her that. But clearly devout religious beliefs, honesty and politics is not a good mix.

Yeah in a country that is trending massively towards non-religious and only few assigned believers are fundamentalists including those running the Churches themselves is a terrible place to state extremely outdated view especially as leader of a socially progressive party. Tim Farron got outdone by far less.

She's very fresh faced and honest but the journos will keep probing her about her religious beliefs and it'll eventually result in her demise. She's on a hiding to nothing and should probably just have stayed as Finance minister which was a pretty good achievement for someone of her age.

This is the reality. I know if I was a journalist I'd just keep asking her about her views on gay people and how they should just "pray the gay away" and ask her for her thoughts on abortion especially related to rape victims. She'd be toast within 10 mins.

Oh absolutely. So you have to point them to something. Anyone that looks at a map and sees the Russian territory of Kalinigrad has been surrounded by NATO and its allies since the 1990s cannot possibly believe the US & Europe are looking to invade Russia.

I couldn't agree more that teaching children how to evaluate a source of information should be taught as soon as practical. I learnt it aged 17 in my last year of school, by which time many of my friends had left.

The question to ask her is:

"Westminster are seeking to veto gender self ID and you will not challenge that legally even though it was passed with cross party support in the Scottish Parliament. If Westminster sought to reduce the rights and freedoms of gay people in Scotland, would you seek to challenge that?"

Nobody with the faintest interest in gay rights can have any confidence in her ability to stand up for them. It's not even that hypothetical a question given the state of global politics and how happy the Tories and media are to make anything with a whiff of transgender an automatic top story.

The Isla Bryson 'scandal' was essentially that she was held in isolation from all other inmates in a women's only jail as opposed to in isolation from all other inmates in a mixed sex or male jail (whilst being risk assessed) and that the Prison service feel they hadn't received enough information or conflicting information about their history of gender identification (i.e, to assess if they were a chancer). Minor issues with housing inmates is a daily issue in prisons (basically who to put in a protective wing with the sex offenders), yet look at the daily UK wide headlines we got on it. It was bordering on hysteria (and I say that as someone who probably wouldn't permit gender self ID and would leave it to medical experts to decide in a swift, sympathetic and respectful manner).

They dont need to ask Forbes that though, because she is dead in the water with the withdrawal of ministerial support and then seemingly being perfectly relaxed and unquestioning about the matter of children born outside of wedlock being labelled as "wrong".

On a complete tangent, if anyone wants to walk a mile in Kate Forbes's shoes then watch the thought provoking 'Chariots of Fire'. About the only film or book I can think of that looks at Scottish christianity in an objective way. I was born on a Scottish isle and am eternally grateful to have been taken the hell away from the influence of those communities in time for primary school. If theyd messed with my head I am afraid to think what I might have turned into.

Hague and Blair jointly arguing for a Digital ID for all encompassing passport, driver's license, tax records etc which can be shown on your smartphone as well as major tech revolution to upgrade the political and bureaucratic system in this country in the Times today.

Blair always did want ID cards, from what I remember.
I'm not opposed per se, but I always felt his plan wasn't particularly well thought out, with too much information and not enough encryption.

I don't mind having the information there - especially anything that could be useful to the emergency services (like an overview of medical history) but not sure why tax records would need to have anything to do with anything; but if there's anything confidential (like medical records, tax records etc) then it'd need tip-top encryption.

I would say that if photo id is going to be required to exercise an automatic right (like voting) then photo id should be as automatic as having a national insurance number; and easily updated for changes of address / appearance.

The thing is we all know why this has been brought in, it's to create more barriers to voting. We should be making it as easy as possible to vote and encourage as many people to vote as possible (especially ones who don't usually vote) not put people off voting. But the Tories know this. I actually think it's outrageous given the context but can't say I'm surprised.
