A Political Thread pt. 2

it's crazy that if I signed up in June I could have voted on who your next leader would be

You'd be an upgrade on 95% of Tory members who think Boris' appearances on 'Have I got news for you' 20 years ago is better than Pornhub.

More I think about this the more I reckon Johnson will come back. Barring Badenoch or Braverman running I reckon he'll get 100. Then it's irrelevant who else gets 100 MPs as the membership will vote Johnson. It will then fracture the party and hopefully result in Conservative MPs resigning the whip. I don't see how Johnson can govern.

I also reckon Rishi shouldn't run. Whoever takes office is likely to lose the next election barring a miracle. He'd be better off biding his time.

That would probably make it all worthwhile. As long as the split was permanent and when Labour get in with a landslide, they change FPTP to PR.

Forgive my knowledge of PR but would that lower there votes if it's a landslide as it would in 2019 for the Tories. My understanding is the Brexit party would have got 10 seats etc under PR in 2019.
Would it be in Labour's interest to switch?

@ncurd didn't you call Johnson coming back a while ago?
Nah that was some other genius since my declaration a number of years Trump would never be president, I have zero faith in my political predictions. I thought he was resigned to the dustbin but only because I predicted a general election before he'd have the chance.

Short term. Yes, they'd lose votes - but they'll likely lose them anyway due to being in power.

Medium term, no - it'd work out better.

Long term, probably yes, they'd lose a bit of their relative size as there would be more viable alternative parties. But it would be a healthier democracy for it.

The dismantaliting of the megaparties to their actual distinct groups will be one the main benefits.

UKIP would have been in Parliament from the early 00s under PR as they were in the European parliament but that doesn't mean it's a bad idea.

Yup. "People who say things I disagree with would get a voice (proportional to the number of people who do like what they say)" is a reason in favour of PR, not against.
It's that whole "I wholly disapprove of what you say and will defend to the death your right to say it" thing

I still can't figure out what Johnson and his backers are playing at. If Sunak wins the MP vote comfortably then surely his backers will take Johnson down again as soon as he re-enters No.10 (assuming he wins the membership vote). There's also the enquiry hanging over Johnson which could force him out in a couple of months. Are they deliberately trying to stop Sunak taking over or do they just want to cause more chaos for the country? What a bunch of clunts!

Also who will fill the posts in a Johnson government? It was running thin last time around.

Johnson winning now will just leave rishi with a bigger mess than he'd have for two leadership campaigns in a row. How many times can they get this wrong?
