A Political Thread pt. 2

Joke will be on ITV when they go bust from paying all the winners bills.

shouldn't the tory membership be a rich boy party club? how did this happen?
Well considering most of the membership are of retirement age that's not quite accurate. You can make the case they are less sexist than they are racist.

Reality is Truss got the Johnson loyalist vote and for some reason being tied to a PM that resigned in disgrace was a boon to the Tory membership. They genuinely think he was hard done by.....wife heard from the in laws (voters not members)....******* idiots.

Do you mean how did they vote in a woman?
somewhat. in my mind I was framing this as traditional conservatives vs new wave populist. I haven't done too much reading up on it but Truss doesn't seem like a traditional candidate.

shouldn't have counted out the racism angled. Just figured that Indians are well accepted among the middle and upper class professionals.

Jeez I can see you having to bite your tongue every time you go over there for Sunday lunch.

Yeah ncurd gave a good answer. You have to remember that these 65 plus year old white men will pop 10 viagra a day and crack one out over pictures of Thatcher which is why they were dressing Truss up in blue. It turns them on. That alone will get them to overlook their sexist sensibilities and as ncurd said they are more racist than sexist (probably)

Then there's the fact Johnsonwas popular with the members and Sunak was seen as stabbing him in the back where as Truss is not seen in that way. On top of that there was a big narrative that Sunak wasn't popular due to his super affluent background and being out of touch. Obviously these points don't have to make any logical sense as confirmation bias is at play but I imagine they will be the main factors, with wrong skin colour being at the top.

We live 2 hours away and yes I limit my time with them as much as possible. They won't be reasoned with and their both openly homophobic and racist unless you call them out on it and they'll claim not. I've gotten into trouble in the past and now basically don't say anything when their around that even gets close to political.

My wife apparently nearly went ballistic at that one though.

It's one of the things above all others I struggled to comprehend with Trump and Johnson, the idea that they in any way, shape or form could associate with your average person or gave a **** about anything beyond themselves? It's not like they entered the races as unknowns, their personalities were extremely well documented long before entering office. Nothing quite says sticking it to the elite like going for an Etonian who by most records was an academic failure but still waltzed into top university because of his schooling, messing about in all the stereotypically worst parts of privileged upbringing, a vast history of self-aggrandisement, lying, cheating and screwing people over. A person who has had everything handed to them on a plate and who then proceeds to **** on the plate for a laugh, THAT is what people saw as someone who could associate with your average person? The same with ******* MOGG!? The guy couldn't be further from the average person if he tried. Even the royals are more grounded than that Victorian tosser, and that's saying something. Yet somehow the Tory faithful convinced themselves that these people of all people are anti-establishment!? It's 1984 level of double speak, they are as far in the establishment as it's possible to be!

Argh the Tories in this country are just the perfect turkeys voting for Christmas over and over...

My dad who is first generation HK immigrant but surprisingly a daily mail reader, as is my mum (who still is) when I was growing up. Has been a Tory his whole voting life here - hates Labour mainly because he lived here during the 1970s. Now retired, he's gone onto being brainwashed by the whole China thing- watching Chinese news and online websites. Constantly irritates me and my sibling with pro China crap, he messages us with, despite both of us ignoring or telling him to stop sending this as neither of us agree and have grown up here and having a very British outlook on life. Nothing I say when discussing China will persuade him, and he always takes their side. So I have given up.

It's a very fine line when it comes to family and politics. I definitely go by the don't discuss " politics, sex or religion" at the dinner table.

Do they ever use the line: " I have nothing against gay people but ....."

Nah more like "they shouldn't be allowed to do that in public"

The fellas were holding hands...
Ha! Had this conversation with my mum once. She was saying that back in the day people weren't offended and that people had a live and let live attitude. Asked her what would have happened if two black guys holding hands walked into the pub they had in South Derbyshire in the 80......

Truss is just a stooge, but blonde women are proving very popular with the far right in Italy and France too. I can't quite get my head around it to be honest given the far right typically campaign for measures to turn women back into birthing machines first and foremost (to limit the 'horrors' of immigration).

Tories are xenophobic but I don't think anyone can criticise the diversity if their leadership candidates and cabinet. It embarrasses every other political party in the UK in my opinion so I give them a pass on that. Whether that's just a short term Boris thing remains to be seen though.

Plus Sunak should never have been assumed to be a good candidate as:
i) he is mince
ii) he got the exact same Covid fine as they guy pressurised into resigning because he, er, got a Covid fine.
