A great big Munster thread

Riveting intellectual debate here.

I've never been convinced of a winger as a captain. I'm sure he's a good role model and very professional (we'll disregard the 2007 incident), but the fact is that he'll often be too far removed from the action to lead by example as it were.

It's tough to know who else could have gotten the job though. Donnacha Ryan would have certainly been an option, as would have been James Coughlan.

Maybe Penny is looking to move howlett closer in field that would make more sense, I too was surprised I woulda reckoned they would give it to ROG who has captianed before but like Howlett (no matter what he says) will not be round for too long, they should have gave it to someone younger to prepare for the future like O'Mahony or like Fiec (can't be arsed writing the whole thing out) said Ryan woulda been a great choice. Don't see the point on giving it to howlett although he has captained munster in the past, he is on his way out and he is not Irish which is just silly choice for an Irish team to have. Woulda been happy if he was named vice behind some of the younger lads and that means he coulda took up the captaincy when the internationals are on. Maybe getting a wee boost cause he is a Kiwi ;)

You're right. Speaking of which Johann Muller is an incredibly Irish name.

Well i reckon that too was the wrong choice, strong believer in having a national player captain your team

This hasn't been posted in for a while. Didn't get to see the match tonight. Heard O'Connell was good. How was Sheridan tonight? Also can anyone tell me if James Cronin is up to much. Him Dineen and Marsh have been added to the H-Cup squad, so I'm curious.

Paulie was immense. Man of match and Varley had a superb game. Sheridan was very good and game dipped when Duncan replaced him. Cronin is ok was just added as best of unregistered front rows. Dineen added due to good for and Earls injury while Sheridan is in great form and will probably make bench for QF but also he replaces Stringer. Unfortunately all this means CJ Strander won't be able to play in this years tournament

Thats a shame, I liked what I saw of Stander so far. Been really impressed with Dougall as well. Really random signing. Any news on those rumored signings Muffin?

Greetings all!

I'm impressed Sheridan, and delighted it means Williams won't be in the first choice 23. O'Connell back will make a massive difference to our season, we are going in to a QF as underdogs, a role we are much better suited to than the favourite tag we have been burdened with in the last few years. Pity we will likely be without Earls and Zebo, but i think we can give it a real go. Muhman Abu. (100% positive return post)

Can't see Fitzgearld coming even though some say he's signed my usual sources well in the know say it not as done as been reported. MunsterMan don't rule out Zebo. I was there today when he was doing running and I still think we can get him back although it will be tight

Zebo fit would be beautiful. Be interesting to see what team we put out against Glasgow Friday.

As I posted in the Leinster thread, 98fm are reporting that Luke Fitzgerald to Munster is a done deal.

Nothing done yet still talking but maybe it's near I not sure but not completed yet

At least that puts that to bed although I think it was never happening really

A Munster development side were beaten by Russian team Enisey-STM a few days ago:

The result isn't important since it was essentially a Munster third or fourth choice squad. What caught my eye was one of the players on the bench, Aaron McCloskey. A couple of years back, McCloskey signed a contract with Rugby League powerhouse St Helens. What intrigues me is his size. He's 6'7" tall and 120kgs. A big f'n lump. In Rugby League if nothing else he will have worked on his ball handling since he's expected to carry the ball more in that sport. I see he's now back with Garryowen. Any idea how he's getting on?

Doing well. There was 2 of them that went to St Helen's and then down to France for development. They were offered extensions but McCloskey came home and Ian Cross got a contract with London Irish but broke ankle on first week so he is on a year break from contract but another big lad who is converted to wing by L. Irish

I didn't realize Cross had signed for London Irish. He seemed to be doing quite well for the Crusaders RL team in Wales.

Yea I think both of them were offered to extend but I suppose they preferred union. Both doing good work coaching League here locally though as game is growing rapid here and also with World Cup coming this year

Ireland v Australia will be played in Thomond Park, right?
Correct Snoop and it really has to be seen down here to believe how popular the game is getting. Many junior clubs season finished around mid-March/early April and the players are all now going playing league. I have never watched it fully myself but when I do see it on tv I do watch it and enjoy it as there are certain skillset and plays I really enjoy.
