2nd Test: South Africa v Lions

Agreed - it was a perfectly normal clear out - you see it 20+ times every game - Yes, there was more intensity in it, but so what. It was just unfortunate that an injury resulted. I know what ppl are talking about when they say Shalk is a stand-up guy off the field, When you guys were over here we met him and he was a lovely guy - gigantic, but really nice - as opposed to Percy who was a complete c$%k! But it's difficult to make any other conclusion about him when you see the footage - it was awful - YES, it will follow him around for the rest of his life.

I really feel that this isn't something that should go on for four years though. Seriously, I feel that the South Africans can and should enjoy their win. The Burger incident never made a big difference to how the Lions were able to play the game, the player was luckily not hurt. It seems that it was an overly physical game from both teams and a classic encounter. I think for the good of rugby we can't have every game turn into a court case for any more than a week or two of debate. Otherwise no-one will ever be able to claim a victory at anything.

I think the B&IL had a lot of hard luck, but they've showed they can play rugby at the highest level in any case.

Meh I can't see this being like the BOD-Umanga thing. Sure they were both incredibly dangerous but eye-gouging occurs alot more than that kind of spear. Also Brian was arguably the best player in the world going into that series as well as being the Lions Captain whereas Luke, while being handy enough, ain't that good. Plus he didn't have to leave the field.

Ronan O'Gara should invest in a proper tackling technique.[/b]

His technique isn't actually that bad, he is just afraid of contact.

Look at the Fourie try again, he has the hit lined up well, but pussies out and stops dead in his tracks for Fourie to run over him.

It's not like a guy like Geordan Murphy who has poor technique, but (especially this season) will just throw himself at the attacker, if ROG had the courage to do that we wouldn't have this problem.

I have read the guys book, every defence coach he has ever had has done individual work on his tackling technique, he just doesn't like tackling.

So the Schalk Burger incindent is now the '05 BOD spear tackle 05 incident? :([/b]
Seems like it.

Burgers gouge allowed us all to vent about how evil the Boks are and how the ref f***ed us over, and while P Divvy did manage to imitate Henry's blind support for Umaga, the incident doesnt compare to the O'Driscoll one at all.

The press love it so they wont let it go, but the majority of supporters are done with it.

So the O'Driscoll thing isn't still a matter for concern from here on? Thats good to hear. :)

Nahhh no need to hunt. We all know who was guilty and we all know that they will never be punished for it. Not a witch hunt, but definately remembered.

On the Burger thing, the only reason its had so much column inches is because it was handled so badly, first by the officials, them by the management and finally by the diciplinary board.

Indicently, who comes up with the punishment? Is it an international board, or South African rugby. I still dont understand why it wasnt 18 weeks.

Agreed - I don't think anyone can contest that eye gouging is completely unacceptable, but I think the debate is the impact on the game which the complete dismissal (rather than 10 minute one) of Burger may have had.

A game which was this close with both sides fully staffed (injuries aside), can surely have been dramatically altered, had the side who won (just), been reduced to 14 men so early on. The difference in numbers creates overlaps, as well as increasing the demands on the 14 left behind. I'm not saying the Lions would definitely have won, but I think it is a reasonable case.

That aside, I think the series would still have gone to SA, but it's a shame for a (deserved) win to be tarnished like this, I'm sure a lot of South Africans feel the same.

Still whining wow!!! Dry your eyes man!! Check out some of the comments at the bottom.[/b]
You posted it already and no one really gave a shite. Its people giving opinions about another guys opinion. Were doing that here already.

Really shocked at Schalk. Before this I had nothing but admiration for the guy, thought he was a great player and a great sport. One of the good guys. He's let Rugby down.

Also, the Springboks were the better team and handled the pressure, the Lions didn't. End of.

Is anybody else getting completely f***ed off by this "holier-then-thou" attitude coming from certain quarters? *cough*

Perhaps the Football fever is decaying any sense of decency...

Remember when Jake White said none of the Irish team would get in to the Saffa team, right before we beat you? Get off your high horse, If the shoe was on the other foot your coaches and players, especially PDV would be complaining just as much.
