[2023 Six Nations] England v France 11 March 2023. Kickoff 16:45

Yeah. Swap Mako out (preferably for VRR or Obano if he can stay fit) and Cole for Stuart and I'm happy with that 23.
Don't want to much do you, tbf I'd love pretty much the same but atleast we have a logical exciting team here, if they do under perform against a pretty well established French side it needs to be remembered that this is a pretty inexperienced side and needs time, I still want to see Arundel given descent time at 15, rate Stewart highly and always need balance but do think both could change depending on game style opposition etc.

What is required of a leadership role in an international setup during a game, I mean all players picked are supposed to be amongst the best the country has to offer, for me it's pretty basic lead by example, make some key decisions about kickable pens, put your arm around youngsters and be supportive especially when a mistake is made, have a strong word to rein players in a bit if they are making criminal stupid pen decisions and try and have a good open dialogue with the ref (possibly this is the single biggest thing), really most of this can be shared quite easily between experienced players and who ever communicates best with refs probably does that role as a lot of refs don't like multiple players getting involved seems to me too much importance of it is made at times.

I am very happy with starting XV. I agree it is exciting or at least has the potential to be. I just really hope it goes well enough to make this more than a once off.

Even if it doesn't go well Borthwick should stick with it (maybe bar Malins). He's already flip flopped on his midfield and if he changes horses after this game - against a misfiring but still very good side - then he'll look like he has precisely no conviction in what he's doing, which the players and press alike will be able to smell a mile away.

Can't wait to see Cole, Mako and Farrell up the pace from the bench.

Genge with the armband is a great story.

I reckon SB is hoping ENG are up before bringing on the bench, and Cole/Mako/Faz are put on to hold on to whatever lead they may have. Not sure that's what'll happen but I think that'll be the spin on the tactic.

I find it curious that Genge is captain ahead of Itoje when Itoje was captain of the England under 20s team. Have Itoje's captaincy skills gone backwards?

Tbh, I feel like a lot of people ask about Itoje being/having captains duties based on the U20's experience, but has he ever showed captaincy traits in the Sr. squad?

Feel like at younger levels (though less so recently) captaincy is often just given to the best player
Kind of like how at younger age grades the best player gets put at 10 (like Sinckler and Beaumont starting out their lives as flyhalves)

Think captaincy and leadership are two separate and things and Itoje never really captaining club or country suggests it's not part of his game (and I wouldn't be surprised if it's something he's said he's not interested in - cause I imagine he'd have captained a lot by now if he'd been keen)

Probably more relevant that Genge was Borthwick's captain at Tigers and is regularly skippered Bristol. I don't remember the last time Itoje captained any side.

Dombrandt also captains quins when Lewies is out (most of the time), but probably better to let him focus on himself for now

Really good test this weekend for England and an excellent selection for which to really learn about the group.

Opportunities for Smith and the Lawrence/Slade midfield to gel. I actually really like that combination- Slades subtlety makes him and Lawrence interchangeable and they are both physical enough to provide comfort next to Smith.

Tight 5 will get a very stern test and then the back row- which showed very early signs of promise v Wales- can hopefully benefit from a continuation of two centres who can carry the ball and straighten our attack.

Penalty count might be deciding factor and that's my concern as you don't want to give a very talented French side any easy points as they can strike at any time to put you out of reach.

Delighted to see Borthwick showing that no one is undroppable and I hope this marks a line in the sand that enables people to break through any perceived ceilings - opportunities are there.

France at their best would come away with the win but with their slight stuttering at the moment a good round of discipline might see England leading a close game at the hour mark - whether the bench has the depth to see them home is another story.

Should be a great contest and as I say will teach us something either way.

Borthwick saying he's picked Smith to run France ragged. Play at a pace they can't handle.

Terrific. You can almost see Smith going full headless chicken, especially if he thinks that Farrell will replace him on 50 or 55. It's hard to think Farrell will get less than 20 mins and even if he comes on at 12, well we know that doesn't work.

I really hope he's not being set up to fail.

Least pessimistic England fan

Smiths natural game is to play high tempo, it's not like they're asking him to go out and call the lineouts or something

England fans: We really want to see Smith given a chance to play his natural game and without Farrell outside him.

Borthwick: We're giving Smith a chance to play his natural game and Farrell isn't outside him.

England fans: Well that's it, Borthwick's setting him up to fail.

This is true, but our discipline is one area that has seen genuine and clear improvement under Borthwick so far. Hopefully that continues.

It's just absurd to throw a young (24 year old) player with limited international experience (19 caps, 167 points, British and Irish Lion, wins against South Africa and Australia, 2x MoM, top points scorer 2022 6 Nations, 129 club appearances, Premiership winner, 1,192 club points) in at the deep end like this.
