[2023 Six Nations] England v France 11 March 2023. Kickoff 16:45

I'm a bit concerned that SB has continued with JVP. England have come to life when AM comes on and starts firing quick ruck ball. Would hate to see MS stifled by slow ball and then AM comes on with OF and OF gets credit at 10.

Maybe, but France has definitely been the making of him. Struggle to see him not waltzing straight into the 8 shirt when he's available.
Yeah, for all of Jones' faults (of which there are many) I don't really see him not picking Mercer as being one of them. He was nowhere near the player he is today when he left, and given how Bath have turned out over the last couple of years, I really doubt that he'd have become the player he is today if he'd stayed in England.

Not as miffed about this because it's been consistent selection of a younger 9 and the end of Ben Youngs (knock on wood). JVP does seem to be in a similar mold of BY though..

I agree that Alex Mitchell has more pace to his game, and may be a better match with Marcus Smith. Not sure if Harry Randall or Raffi Quirke will come back into contention after the WC. They both looked good until they had so many injuries. Randall back at it with Bristol but not sure what the deal with Quirke is.

Why's that? I like JVP but he has been slow at the base. What's your concern about Mitchell?
Fundamentals too erratic - I like him off the bench vs tired legs but I'd be worried having him control a game for 60+mins

Don't get me wrong, he's definitely capable of being a starter - but throwing him in to start vs France after barely playing this year? Bit rich for my tastes

HR looking good and RQ playing again so we might be heading for a nice problem at 9 - now that our problem at 10 is hopefully sorted!

Fair point. Not sure when it became assumed that backs can't last 80 minutes. Didn't like SB saying that he would bring OF on for last 20 at all.

JVP has played well. I really don't think he's been slow at all. We've had plenty of quick ball in all the games. Of course a new SH will inject pace but Mitchell would look the same if he started.

Once again Jones showed just how right he was to completely dismiss Mercer...

He has the skills of Dombrandt with the fitness and speed of Simmonds, what is not to like.
Playing him at 8, with Willis at 6 and Curry at 7

The best SH on form is Danny Care

Agreed. JvP could probably do with varying his game a bit more (he's definitely capable of more sniping), but his kicking and speed of delivery have both been good.

I like Mitchell, but he's being used in exactly the right way so far IMO. Randall could do the same job, but I prefer Mitchell.

Quirke hasn't looked quite the same post injury. Hopefully he'll come back in to form over the next few weeks and he is starting this weekend. He's got a job to do in dislodging Warr though.

I'm OK with it as long as it suits what's actually happening. If we're fortunate enough to be ahead at that point, Farrell's style is more conducive to maintaining a lead. No issue for me. OTOH, if we're chasing the game, Smith is far more likely to create chances. I have little faith in Farrell's creativity or ability to choose the right options in the red zone.

I always really enjoy this game. I think this is the first really strong test for the current English back row. The French are so powerful there. Interesting going with Smith in a game that I would have expected Farrell. It would have made more sense to cause havoc against Wales with Smith and keep this game tight but I hope I am wrong.

That's all I want to see from players and management alike - reacting to what is actually happening on the pitch in front of them.

It's really not too much to ask is it?

8deg and sunny there today so doubt it's an issue - they'll have had covers on during the worst of it
