[2023 Six Nations] England Squad

That sounds much less concrete than the way people were talking about it, and honestly just sounds xenophobic - which is what you'd expect from rugby's answer to GB News tbf
He said ONE Georgian player (Mamuka Gorgodze) would do it, and that when Borthwick was forwards coach and when they were doing drills where you have to start in a chest on the floor position, VRR would just be on his hands.

More about attitude to training than actually cheating.

Tough on Ben Earl getting dropped from the latest reduced squad. I don't really see Ben Curry in the match day 23 now Lawes is back.

That's probably why Earl is out of the 26 - Lawes comes straight into the 23 so Earl is out, so let him go back to his club to get game time cause he's only had about 30mins rugby the last month and keeps him sharp in case he's needed in round 4 or 5
Misses out on two days of England training but gains 60-80 mins of rugby for Saracens

Bit of a shame that Earl hasn't had the chance to start really he's one of the form backrowers in the prem and more versatile than Ben Curry. Feel like if he'd have been given a start he'd have shone as Ludlum has but those are the breaks I guess.

Earl s a better overall rugby player than Ludlum he is certainly more of an athlete. However Ludlum is proven as a genuine lineout option, which it would appear is a pre requisite for Borthwick.

I think it's simply that Ludlam has proven himself to be a very reliable option at test level. Earl hasn't. That might be largely down to a lack of opportunity, but Ludlam has definitely done more than enough to retain his place.

Ludlam may not have much highlight reel stuff but he has been pretty solid and consistent. Sometimes that's what you need in a team, players who just do their job consistently to a high level. Think back to Hill as the archetypal 6, not much in the way of highlight reel stuff but widely regarded as one of the best 6's the game had seen. Ludlam is no Hill but he hasn't done a whole lot wrong at all and there is no reason to drop him.

TBH I think it's a shame how Underhill has completely dropped off the radar (injury and other reasons). He was also an incredibly solid player with the USP of being able to put in some monster hits that could completely swing momentum.

Earl might be quicker but there is no evidence to say he's a better rugby player nor that he's a better athlete. Fundamentally they play very differently and offer different things so to compare them as apples vs apples is pretty pointless.

Borthwick has seen Ludlam as a 6 and then secondary 8. Where as Earl has been at 7 each time I think. Really it's Earl vs Willis vs curry.

Just watched a brief interview with Ollie And Lewis Chessum. Jeez Lewis is Massive...he must be about 6'10 but his frame..hes already got some size on him.

Supposedly him and Ollie are the same height (6'7) but Lewis does look a step taller - might have just grown since the last measurements, considering how young he is

It's about time we had some actual big locks coming through
Yeah Lewis looks quite a bit taller...but its his frame that surprised me...looks big already.

Yeah theres a few coming through...Alfie Bell (formerly of Wasps) down at Exeter is another who has serious promise. Hopefully Exeter can bring out the potential...he's another 6'8/6'9 lad...

Hows Groves doing with Sharks?

Out on loan with Sale FC this season - starting every week so getting plenty of good game time,

Didn't notice him in our last Prem cup game but maybe that's a compliment cause we got battered and he wasn't one of the ones who stood out as obviously terrible :p

I'd say the fact that he reigning premiership rugby player of the year would give that some credence. I don't recall Ludlam ever been in those conversations?
In terms of athletic ability I'd say earl was quicker, definitely more dexterous and possibly stronger. In fact this wouldn't even be a debate if he was 3 inches taller.
I have no problem with Ludlam however I think we have better options at 6 . Notably Ted Hill and T Curry when fit. Willis has to play if fit

Tom Curry out for up to 6 weeks, injured in England training

Cheers Borthers!

Time's probably against, but would be fun to see the Chessums go up against the Grays in a Calcutta Cup match. Be great for the Willis boys to join in too, although the Scots would probably have to bring the Calders out of retirement to take them on.

What's great Hooker is that the new batch coming through all look huge and yet incredibly mobile with work rate.

In a few years...
4 Alfie Bell - 6'8 / Lewis Chessum - 6'9
5 Ollie Chessum 6'7
6 Ted Hill 6'5 / George Martin 6'6
7 Jack Willis 6'3 or T.Curry 6'2
8 Zac Mercer 6'4

Now that's a big back 5 with mobility..
