2022 World Cup - Qatar

Is two yellow cards a one game ban? I would like to see a team who is guaranteed top spot in the final game (possible for England if Wales don't beat Iran) to take 5 reds foe wearing the armband and be forced to forfeit. Could easily pick the 3rd choice keeper and 4 outfield players who won't play the second round game to do it.

It would take a bit of self awareness from the guys putting their hands up but they'd achieve more in doing that than riding the bench to a world cup win in my opinion.

"There are people who say we don't have a backbone, but that's not how it works.
"We just want to play football. I would have loved to play with that band, but not at the expense of a yellow card."

"People say we don't have a backbone so I'm going to explain in plain English exactly how I don't have a backbone"

How would that work? You stand your ground the first game, loose, get players suspended and then capitulate to fifa and their rules on game 2?
Dunno, i dont like it. What's the message? "These are my principles, and they are important, very important. So much that i am willing to throw a game for them, but not important enough for me to throw 2 games, course"

I believe this is has to be an all in kinda move. This is not for luke-warm blooded people.

The whole offside rule is very frustrating and VAR has bought this into focus. Fans don't want to see goals ruled out because 90% of the body is onside and an arm is off. That wasn't the point of the offside rule.

But until they amend it then players have to learn to time their runs better.

I think so but my understanding is they get quashed at some point in the tournament this is to try stop a Gazza moment that someone yellowed in early group stages doesn't get banned from the final due to a semi infraction.

Also do they take more yellows for not taking them off?

This is the whole blame FIFA for being cnuts and kowtowing to their Qatari paymasters. I don't agree with it. But I have sympathy for the players who just wanna play. They are not politicians.

That article is unbelievable. I could even concede his argument if he wore a plain armband.

'I just want to play footie, but i wear armbands with political statements approved by the sports' governing body. That way i can have the cake and eat it too. It's great!'.

**** you.

I agree, but there needs to be congruence. You cant claim that now while having made political statements in the past. That means no armbands, no knee on the ground, no t-shirt with political statement under the footie jersey, etc.

That is precisely why people claim some dont have a backbone. Some talk the talk but when it comes to facing the consequences of those words/actions they change their tune. That IS pretty much a textbook example of not having a backbone.

Yeh and ultimately there is only so much players can do. What does wearing a multi coloured armbands ultimately achieve? Is it really going to change Qatar's stance on LGBT, worker's equality and all the other ills of Qatar and the Middle East. It is a nice unifying gesture ultimately nothing more.

Using football players to correct the ills on Qatar can only get so far.

Stop using Qatar oil and gas for the rest of the world. Stop football clubs like Man City and PSG being owned by Petro states would be more effective IMO. Will that happen- no go very unlikely.

Did a single player refuse to take part for political reasons? As stated earlier, players have walked out on their teams before, Keano did it because of **** organisation from the FAI, Giggs barely ever made himself available for Wales for his own personal gain.

The fact that not a single player thought of refusing to travel makes all the platitudes they are giving in the media totally void of substance and I do think it makes them all look spineless. Football and personal gain/glory > Basic human rights - that is all this tournament will represent to the majority of the world.

Good point Alpha - if players are there and didn't boycott the WC then the damage is already done.

Argentina been really disappointing. Only have themselves to blame for running offside constantly in the first half.

And Argentina's 36 match unbeaten run has come to an end…

First big shock of the WC.
