[2022 Six Nations] England vs Wales (26/02/22)

.

To be fair very few players can break a game by themselves, and nor should we put much weight on that either. It's far more important to have the right system and shape in place and if some of those players happen to have those moments of magic then great.

If you can give Slade front foot ball and half a second of space he can be lethal and he and Manu would seem to complement each other well. But looking at what he's done so far, he's usually had to cope with at least 2 of a non dominant pack, a ponderous 9 and an average centre partner. Not to mention kicking based game plans. Slade's made plenty of errors for sure, but realistically what 13's really going to shine in those conditions??

As for Manu, clearly he walks into the team on merit when fit. But realistically how often has he strung together a series of match influencing performances at international level in relatively recent years? Will what worked in 2012 really cut it now? Come to that how often has he even been available? At his best what he brings is brilliant, but to pin hopes on him or build a team around him is, unfortunately, delusional.
It's not really soley on merit though, the back line is relatively light weight and lacks punch and any one to run direct, if bringing in Manu was disrupting a successful settled centre partnership I would agree but it isn't him just having a solid game is equal if not better than what we have there most of the time.
Parents place should (in my opinion) but not grandparents.
that's what I thought you were saying, but then you mention Sheilds, both his parents were borne in England.

To be fair England got two world cups out of him. Whether they could squeeze a third is fantasy atm, but who else could play that 12 gain line busting role?

Not sure why they're taking until Saturday? It's an obvious choice between Marchant or Daly. EJ should consider Simmonds just for fun though.

Yeah I don't get the wait either - hopefully means they're going to run Marchant at 13 in training with an eye on him starting there
Surely if Daly was going to the centres they'd just say it?

I know Daly is not popular round here, but he was pretty good at 13 for Wasps it's what initially got him international recognition, he was then asked to move between FB and wing things clearly didn't go to well and his confidence seems a bit shot, would be nice to see it back.

As a Wales fan I'd rather not have to face Tuilagi but you have got to feel for the lad, seems every time he's near an England camp he get's injured.

That wasps team played a very attacking, broken field, off the cuff brand of rugby though which is the complete opposite to how EJ likes to play. He's a brilliant 13 in the right team, but I'm not sure this current England set up is the right type of team.

FFS!! Just when we were looking to have a really exciting 9,10,12,13 axis for the first time in forever, and Manu breaks!! Again!! This has to be the last time we call him up. He's clearly a broken lad who needs to consider a different career. In the mean time I'm well up for Simmonds in at 12. I reckon he'd be up for it. Failing that maverick move I suspect Daly will step in. He's a decent centre, got a good kicking boot, and runs decent lines. But that leaves a very lightweight back line bar maybe Steward, which means England have to play with a hell of a lot more guile. No use running little Elliot head long into Welsh defence. He's only going to get turned over. There's enough individual skill on the pitch to do it, abs a strong pack from which to build a platform, but EJs gotta take the shackles off and let the lads play, otherwise this could be a car crash!!

I'd love to see Simmonds at 12 but I don't want to see England being the ones to try that experiment. Let him have a run out there are club level and if it works there, then bring him in. Lawes at 6 for England was pretty poor but after spending time there at his club, he improved a lot.

Also slightly worried about our back 3 aerially. Last time we played Wales they just kept dropping bombs on our back 3 and it hurt. Steward I trust but Nowell and Malins I don't.

I don't see this as much of an issue. Think Nowell's aerial ability is a very underrated part of his game, and while I can't say I know much about how good Malins is in that regard you'd think that since he's primarily a fullback then he'll be fine.

Slade and Daly in the centres is just too light weight. I'm not sold on Marchant really being a player to compliment Slade either although I do want to see him at 13 but with a proper 12 (not Slade).

I can't believe still after 2003 our 12 shirt is a mess with a complete lack of genuine options compared to nearly every other position.

As an England fan I am pleased not to see LRZ in the Team, much like May did against France a few seasons ago he is capable of a couple of scores out of nowhere he has looked pretty average but doesn't need much of an invitation to score sometimes that's all it takes to spark a team.

Time to move away from Manu now. Just disrupts the preparation.

Id be looking at Odogwu in the summer for a more powerful centre option.

Meanwhile...Marchant gets another chance to see if he can bring his quins ability to this level....

Is there a lack of options though, outside of Manu there are none world class but you have Atkinson, O'Connor, Devoto, I don't see any of those as instantly a downgrade of recent options outside of Manu.

Some players are just, through no fault of their own injury prone

Manu
Watson
Billy V

Anyone who attempts to build a team around any of them is just plain daft

O'Conor is a good player, but if we're worried that Slade is too lightweight, he is positively crusierweight in comparison.

Atkinson is too old and too slow and Devoto isn't as good as he's made out to be and also spends an awful lot of time out inured.

Kelly or Ojomoh are far better bets IMO.
