[2022 Six Nations] England vs Wales (26/02/22)

Probably the best team England have put out so far and I'm excited for it. How Ewels remains over Launchbury and Isiekwe baffles me though.

I'm hoping that England picking an exciting 9/10/12 combo is all a ruse and they are just going to kick every 1st phase :p

One thing I'd say about Randall is obviously his box kicking is an area of weakness, but there's such a lack of distance and height, I feel there must be a fairly sizeable technical issue in there somewhere that should be workable to the point of being at least passable fairly quickly
Other than that, the 9-13 may have some fun at the weekend, a team built for unstructured rugby

Eddie's comments on the decision
"We want to put some pace in the game early. We think there will be chances against Wales early. Harry has been getting better each week. Ben Youngs will finish the game, and these games tend to go to the wire. Imagine having a half-back with 115 caps in the best form of his career coming on to manage the last 20"

Best form of his career lol

I remember a Ben Youngs who used to make sniping runs and not fire the ball at peoples heads or feet.

I think Jones had to gamble. The "ole reliable" Youngs & Co are not looking likely to beat France or Ireland. We could potentially win this but then lose those 2 and have another crap 6N in which nothing was learned either. On the flip side, we can try something new and if it works then great, we've got something to build on. If it doesn't, is it really much worse than what we usually would have put out? Especially with the WC coming up, we don't have the time to be farting around with players who we already know inside out. Youngs will not change between now and the WC except getting even slower. Randall though could change a lot.

Ewels... Just can't fathom it at all. I think Squidge describing him as the "default lock" setting on a rugby game as accurate. A player with no defining features physically or skilfully. A straight 5's across the board player with all the default face and body settings. How he keeps sticking around I do not know. Youngs can still have rare moments of brilliance, Ewels is just so painfully average he doesn't stand out for anything except poor discipline.

I do hope we see Smith and Dombrandt bring some of their Quins synergy to England.

******* Cuthbert. Not even Mcnichol on the bench (though J Davies was decent when he came on against Scotland I suppose.)

No natural back 3 cover on the bench but I suppose if a winger gets injured Anscombe comes on at 15 and we move Williams to the wing.

Oh, we can imagine it.
Unfortuantely, imagination is where it will remain.

Well that's got a lot of the selections we wanted to see. Ironic that a backline designed to attack has got probably the least inspiring pair of wingers we've had in a while. An in form May and Watson would make that backline look very good.

Lawes and Manu have little rugby under their belts, but likewise with Faletau for the Welsh.

I just don't get the Ewels thing, but at least Isiekwe hasn't been totally canned.

There is some inexperience in key positions but plenty elsewhere and on the bench. We're at home and I think we'd have to see anything other than a win as pretty disappointing.

I honestly think Pivac has given up on "developing our game" (or our players for that matter) it's just win at all costs.

Cutjbert brings experience that's why he's in. Forget he's barely played much international rugby for the last god knows how long but he works hard.

It's like all the talk prior and post Ireland game. We've got to be physical and bash em up. No talk on developing skills to help us manufacture space for our talented back line. Just more "we need to front up blah blah blah" bored of it.

So that backrow? Arnt all 3 physical attacking player but no breakdown specialists? I dont know enough about Basham tbf.

Wales Online being a bit lethargic with their usual bit of whine material. Come on guys, get your arses in gear and produce a Welsh team that is 1 point better than England so I can rant about it.

"How do we not give Cuthbert 0 points?"
"Rate him better than Curry"
"But even VC will laugh at us!"

They had an article earlier about England trying to "poach" a Wales player - the extent of which was England u20s asking if he wanted to go to their trials (he plays for Bath academy, English parents, born in Wrexham due to military parents) and him saying no
So I think they're struggling a bit for outrage atm - even the usually outrageous comment section was saying the article was nonsense
